Mortal Shell offers a dark, atmospheric Souls-like experience with its unique “shell” mechanic and weighty combat. While its world feels immersive, the confusing map design, short length, and occasional jank keep it from reaching its full potential—making it a solid but just okay adventure.
Note:
I only recommend this game for the people who have finished most of the souls like and just want more however if you are new to the genre just skip it for now, and try other souls like .

In short, it's a nice and easy souls-like game with several bosses, four weapons and their abilities, and four characters with different advantages, which, however, are not given at the beginning of the game, but must be found and obtained by defeating bosses. I recommend it if you like souls-like games. The only downside is the lack of a map, but I think it would be much easier with one. But even without it, you are completely immersed in the atmosphere of the game, and you need to remember where you were and where you are not. The map is not very big, so this will not be a problem. Enjoy the game.

I actually like the game, but after grinding and then fighting the end boss four times in a row, it just feels ridiculous. He spam-spawns enemies, throws out endless waves, constantly jumps up only to crash down and repeat the cycle—like, seriously, wtf? And that’s not even the worst part. You finally push through all of that, beat him, and then a bug stops you from finishing him off because the prompt never pops up… four times in a row. At that point, I basically said screw new game plus—I’m not wasting my time. Overall, it’s a good game, but the bugs completely ruin the experience. Hopefully they do a better job with Two

I ended up quitting Mortal Shell, which is a shame because the atmosphere and setting are exactly the kind of thing I usually enjoy. Unfortunately, the gameplay just didn’t click with me.
The biggest issue was how “bullet spongey” the enemies felt. It’s fine to face groups of mobs in a soulslike, but when every single one takes forever to kill, it just becomes frustrating rather than challenging.
The parry system also ruined the flow for me. In most games you parry just before getting hit, but here it feels inconsistent and awkward. On top of that, regaining health is tied almost entirely to parries or rare mushrooms, and since the parry never felt right, it meant I was constantly running out of options to heal.
After a while, I realized I just wasn’t having fun. There are too many other games out there to spend time forcing myself through one that doesn’t feel rewarding. It’s a pity, because the world design and atmosphere are genuinely great, but the combat design made me drop it entirely.

Decent souls-like with some questionable choices and poor game design. Would probably only recommend trying it when it's deeply discounted.

Solid 3/10: Theres barely anything redeemable about the game
This is one of, if not the worst, Souls like I have played in my life. This game doesnt feel like it was tested or examined by people other than the devs. Do no waste your time on it, I have died to jank more often than my own lack of skill. The enemy placement is not clever, it is annoying, Dark Souls 2 SOTFS levels of annoying. The bosses are uninspired, or worse, buggy, I have been killed MULTIPLE times by lingering hitboxes after an attack has clearly, visibly and obviously stopped. Theres is no level ups or character builds, you simply unlocks "Abilities" for your current armor that has a probability of procing.
This game is nothing like a fair Souls Like game, This game is either untested, unfinished or the developpers are incompetent

Not bad, but could have been better. I'm completely open-minded towards "souls-like" games and the Mortal Shell is a decent game, it has some flaws here and there, but it's still a solid game.
I liked the setting, the atmosphere and the combat system. Although the lore of this game is really weird and completely alien to me. The strongest sides of this game are combat system and gameplay in general - it's really good and enjoyable. Characters design is also good. I also enjoyed playing the lute, it's a simple but cool feature.
You have 4 playable characters/shells (Tiel is my favorite character, he is rogue with very low hp, but he is very agile, I like that) and 4 weapon types (+ bonus weapon, a hand ballista or something like that) at your disposal, you will unlock all of these as you progress through the story. The game world is divided into 3 different regions each with its own boss fight. The final, 4th boss, was very predictable and really weird looking creature. There are also several mini-bosses.
I have to admit that some of the bosses are not cool and I didn't like one region of the map, but I still recommend giving it a try. As I said above, the combat is really satisfying and the setting/atmosphere is cool - that's why I like this game. Now I'm looking forward to Mortal Shell 2.

You know what they say, when life gets hard... You just gotta get harder.
If you like getting hard figuratively and more importantly physically I whole-heartedly recommend this game.
This game isnt perfect by no stretch of the imagination, but theres something oddly unique and poetic about this game. The world is unforgiving and at times very unforgiving as if it hates you, which reminded me of when I first played Dark souls where it felt the world was out to get you. It feels like that just smaller and more compact in a way.
Bad first:
Map is confusing more so than dark souls and other souls likes even for how small the game is.
Bosses are lack luster you kind of figure out how to fight them in a few tries.
Good:
World is great and unforgiving, exploring is still confusing but oddly fun and interesting as you can find some of the things that make this game unique if you are willing to go the extra mile.
Shells and weapons are fun to play with even though there are relatively few of them, upgrading them really feels impactful to your experience
Getting Hard: Oh yeah you know. But seriously this mechanic is a hit or miss depending on who you ask, I personally find it interesting as it gives another level of agency to the player in how they might want to react to a situation though at times it does make the game easy if you know how to abuse it and time it well enough. To me its just another way to be able to react to a situation, you can get caught lacking if you time it wrong especially if you do it during a bosses multi-hit combo which you can still dodge relatively safely after getting hit but the problem is if they dont hit you at times and wait for you to unharden thats when you might be in some trouble.
This game can be as easy or as difficult as you want it and more so depending on your skill to harden up *giggity*
Virtuous cycle, I have yet to complete a run but its oddly also fun and some how fits when you get the hang of it. It is similarly also punishing when you start but it gets easier and you fall into a rhythm like playing any other rogue like with random rolls and enemies every run. It also feels rewarding to progress through as you notice you are getting better and slowly becoming as busted as possible as rolls stack on each other.
I do agree compared to other souls like it does feel this game suffers from some amount of everything I said from game mechanics, to game size, but I do still recommend it if you dont have time to play anything big these days, and if you are willing to go through the grind well I think you will be pleasantly surprised the more you play.
Side note if you did play and buy this game from the epic game store when it came out years ago, it apparently carries over that save to your steam launcher I dont know why maybe its because you can link steam and epic I dont know but it was hella convenient and nice that I did not need to start over my progress and hard work so if you played it before on Epic and wanna give it a try again dont worry about your save data.

Who decided that giving non-boss enemies ten times the health they have in Fromsoftware games was a good idea? Hint, it's not. It makes for EXTREMELY repetitive gameplay. There's a reason bullet sponges are a meme. Most of these types of games have a problem where the camera moves too fast when locked on creating a nauseating experience. This game went way too far in the opposite direction: the camera does not properly track the player often resulting in the player being able to walk off camera or walk so far to the edge of what's on screen that it creates an incredibly jarring and unplayable experience. I will try again later but as of right now, I am too angry to want to give this game another chance as the fundamentals are too profoundly wrong.
