It sure is good to play a JRPG where you're not a high-schooler. The metaphor is ham-fisted but still pretty good. Kind of drags and repeats itself a bunch but you're not going to have the Persona pacing problem as the first fight is less than 20 minutes in. There's plenty of good little fixed in combat that make it quick and fun. If you're itching for a 100 hour jrpg then pick this up.

Fantastic game, the best written Atlus game by far. No actual content DLC which is odd but eh, that's fine and I'm not buying the silly costumes. Great combat system too.
Only downsides is that the game kinda looks like it could've been on the PS3. The art direction is amazing but the technical execution is ehhhh... The anime cutscenes are weirdly worse than anything I've ever seen in any other Atlus game, everyone's just always slightly off-model and it made me wish for more in-game cutscenes instead.

Masterpiece! Very interesting story and great gameplay mechanics. The only slightly negative point is that the protagonist is a clear downgrade from characters like Joker of Persona 5 and isn't really believable as a leader.

A fantasy road-trip simulator and a great political thriller. Metaphor ReFanatazio is one of the best JRPGs available right now. For me personally, its one of the best games I have ever played. What makes this game stand out is how well it tackles such a big themes like racism, classism, political manipulation, fear of the unknown and many more. Journey is amazing from the start to finish.
Atlus really outdid themselves with this one. The world is huge and full of potential, it 100% needs a sequel or at least a spinoff.

This game is more than just "medieval fantasy Persona." It is certainly the same dna, but it does plenty different, most of which I think is done better.
Pros:
- Strategic combat with an in-depth "class" system akin to Final Fantasy Tactics, where you unlock Archetypes, level them up, then can carry over a number of their skills to another Archetype.
- A MUCH better paced story then Persona series. The time between story beats, dungeon lengths, and dialogue in general, flow a lot better and keeps you hooked.
- The Calendar being used to give the game actual travel time between destinations is wonderful to see and makes the adventure truly feel grand.
- I found all the NPCs in your party, and that you gain relationship levels with, to be fantastic.
- The benefits gained from raising your "Confidant" levels are more useful then in Persona, even if not as varied.
- The Turn Icon combat is brought over from SMTV, which I think is one of the best turn based combat systems, rewarding buffs, debuffs, and weakness exploits much more then the average JRPG
- The main dungeon crawls are a truly fun, multi-calendar day experience, with the length really adding to the pre-dungeon planning and in dungeon strategy. I actually enjoyed the fact I ran out of MP and had to find a checkpoint room to retreat from and return the next day.
- The music is fantastic
- The game does an amazing job of making the most out of its budget, using really creative ricks to emulate the feeling a truly grand, continent-spanning journey.
Cons:
- The side dungeons are your standard repetitious Persona fare. Though, I will give them credit for being finite, none-randomized places you can fully explore.
- The late game grind for the MAG and XP you need to unlock all the Archetypes and inheritable skills you want can be a bit of a drag.
- A mid game unlock takes away some of the magic and majesty of travel
- The auto-play dialogue option often cuts off the last couple words of the voice acting
Neutral:
- Not being able to romance a companion is a bummer, but it makes sense in the context of the story
- While the music is fantastic, the tracks are pretty limited
- Overall graphics and animation are good enough for the budget, with the art direction, character, and enemy designs doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Overall Rating: Best in Class (JRPG)

Atlus has its own style, so if you've played Persona, you'll definitely like it. However, playing Persona will make Metaphor feel a little less impressive.

its fine, nothing more, nothing less, sure I did enjoyed this game more then I enjoyed Persona 5R(Royal) and about the same as Persona 5(standard), but in all honestly I would rather spend my time playing Persona 3 or 4, if you like the Persona games, SMT games or just Atlas games in general it could be worth buying but definitely get this game on sale if you are considering buying it.

The first third of the game was fun and gave me high hopes but it gets significantly worse. The pacing is so bad especially during the second half and the story is mid at best. Combat was mid and the whole archetype thing is extremely linear. The end game boss fights and stuff are horrendously scaled. The games idea of making fights more difficult is just giving things more turns which is not fun considering the long animations. It just got tedious very fast and had to force myself to want to finish it. Definitely not worth the full price. 6/10 probably

Overall, I recommend Metaphor: ReFantazio if you enjoy JRPGs.
If you’ve played Persona 3, 4, or 5, the gameplay loop will feel instantly familiar. It features turn-based combat, a day-by-day calendar system, and a bond (social link/confidant) mechanic, along with its own take on the concept through Archetypes, which function as spiritual cousins to Personas. As in the Persona series, much of Metaphor’s core draws from Jungian psychology and social themes. That makes sense since many of the same developers who worked on the modern Persona games were involved in creating this one.
As you’d expect from ATLUS, the presentation, voice acting, cutscenes, and music are all top-notch, and the game feels polished throughout.
That said, Metaphor also carries over a few of the notable things from Persona that some people will like and others may not. The game is long, and the story pacing can feel uneven in places. It also throws a lot of systems and mechanics at you early on, which can be a bit overwhelming at times. Fortunately, it’s forgiving when it comes to time management and figuring things out. As long as you stay on top of doing things, you can experience most of what the game offers. By the end of the game, I had every quest complete, every bond maxed, and still had extra days in-game to spare for grinding levels and Archetypes or whatever I wanted before the finale.
While Metaphor’s characters and story didn’t hit me quite as hard emotionally as the Persona games did, I do think they're pretty good, and I think comparing to Persona is a high bar to clear. Its world is imaginative, the mechanics are satisfying, and it’s definitely worth playing or at least trying the demo if you enjoy story-driven RPGs with depth and style.
