I got this thing back in the day when indies were first getting popular. I remember liking the art style, but the game itself was sort of boring. After a couple of hours and a few failed attempts it loses all fun and just becomes tedious.

I played this game as a child in the 2010s. Playing it now, it has held up well in the many years since its release. It has its challenging levels, but they make the game interesting and can mostly be solved without looking up the answer. Overall, it was a very nostalgic experience and one I would recommend to others.

Still holds up well after roughly 17 years. What seems like a simple game is something very fun and enjoyable. Quirky humor, great music, and colorful levels. Some of the graphics can be a bit dated, though. Overall, deep with subtext and meaning... it will probably make you cry! Recommended to play with a box of Kleenex and a bag of wine.

Perhaps all games which rely on physics simulations tend to amuse and frustrate in equal measure, but do keep in mind - this isn't much of a puzzle game but more a test of dexterity and mechanical skill with a mouse.
The game is cute enough with its weird art and abstract meta-story, if somewhat trivial in terms of puzzle complexity. Gooballs come in different flavours - some are infinitely reusable, some can form flammable fuses, others are impervious to damage. Most levels feature little flies which allow undoing a limited number of moves by catching them with a mouse click. Through trial and error you will discover how to shape your creations so they do not topple over - at least until you need them to. Levels usually have a pipe you need to build towards, and a set amount of unused gooballs required to be extracted through it to progress. Base game sets very lax minimums on this amount.
However, most levels have optional challenge conditions - called "Obsessive Completion Distinctions" or OCDs here - which are genuinely pretty tough to figure out. These are of two types - a limit on moves, or a set amount of leftover gooballs to be extracted. Both call for building lean, efficient structures, and have corresponding achievements. Extra gooballs extracted from the levels are sent to the sandbox mode, where a tower can be built for fun. Unfortunately, the limit for this mode is 300, and it is indiscriminate to the kind of gooball saved - all of them will be converted to default black flavour.
Because the base game is pretty unremarkable as a puzzler, for some people it will only be worth playing for the challenges, but herein lies the problem. It manifests itself in a suboptimal user interface, which is too simplistic to be practical. Clearly designed for mobile platforms with one-finger touch controls in mind (there isn't even a settings menu to change screen resolution or volume), it lacks features as well as information for convenience, like the number of moves, the amount of gooballs available and how many have been used so far. The game doesn't feature controls to pick a flavour of gooball in levels where multiple are available, nor a modifier key to choose between a free gooball and an underlying reusable one to be disconnected from the structure. Satisfying the basic level completion goal removes undo-last-move flies and sometimes even the quick restart button, along with spawning a huge flushing handle, which has to be clicked on to continue and might get clicked by accident when the pipe is close by. If a cinematic is planned after a level, it has to be watched in its entirety every game session, and only after watching it once can it be skipped. While having to count moves or gooballs used, and losing ability to undo moves at the end of a level can be regarded as extra challenge, the rest simply adds unnecessary tedium.

Don't believe anyone who tells you having OCD can't be fun.
This game is old but gold. I played it back in 2009 before the tongue-in-cheek trend was common in games, and this game is a refreshing throwback. You can tell it was made by someone as a passion project and not something that was expected to make a whole lot of money. If you're a fan of World of Goo 2 then you'll love the original. The goo balls bunching up can be a little irksome at times but overall the gameplay is very fun and the world and design is very charming and whimsical with a good balance of humor and worldbuilding.

This is THE childhood game for me and my brother. It's short, fun, and for some reason, incredibly atmospheric, with a melancholic soundtrack which was forever burned into my memory. It means a lot to play it again after 14 years.
