I mean, it's not that bad, I somehow find it difficult on Sonic's story, and a great Co-Op Game to have an adventure together! Plus, Trip's Story is pretty hard, but somehow, I've made it to the end too. The Final Boss was worst to challenge. Unlike Sonic 2 Final Boss without Rings. But still, great adventure!

If the game is on sale then give it a shot, otherwise? I wouldn't call it a "Bad" game per say, but it's nothing special. Especially coming the year after Sonic Frontiers which is debatably one of the best Sonic games released in recent time. Sadly, Sonic Superstars almost feels like a repeat of Sonic 4 and in some aspects more literal than others.

It's a decent 2D Sonic game (at least to pass the time till more Sonic games come out). Here are some of my thoughts on it
Pros:
- The controls feel good and responsive, feels like how Mania Sonic would play (though I do suspect they might have nerfed the spin dash
- I know some of you dunk on the OST and yes it is inconsistent, however I thought there were more bops than duds Imo. The only ones I thought really sucked were the boss music early in the game and menu music.
- New original levels, there is good level design in a couple stages and a lot of the levels and gimmicks are really fun. Though, some gimmicks aren't that fun to use (I'm looking at you rotating balls in Press Factory)
Cons:
- Bosses, I think you all saw that one coming, especially the Fang boss, and final boss (really grinds my gears when needing to start over). So much waaaaaitting like god damn. There were some okay/decentish bosses. I did really like the hammer one for example, but other than that, garbage bosses.
- Multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired. Sonic games are not built for couch co op multiplayer (as this game has advertised). If there was a split screen for each player, that would've worked so well, but alas, this is SEGA we're talking about it. Hopefully they learn the right lessons for the next 2D Sonic game with multiplayer. The online multiplayer with the robots is kinda forgettable but I can see people getting enjoyment out of it.
- Button config for keyboard and mouse doesn't let me use the space bar as jump like in Mania, had to use WASD and the fucking ENTER BUTTON TO JUMP! It was a little jarring.
- The price tag, enough said.
Overall, it's a decent/good 2D Sonic game, but some of the flaws do drag it down a bit. If you're looking for an introduction to 2D Sonic games, I would start with the OG Genesis titles and Mania first before you get into this one, also wait for a price drop as a budget 2D Sonic title is not worth full price (Mania is like $20, come on SEGA).
I would only recommend this game if you are a Sonic fan and/or have a lot of patience, otherwise I'd say just play the other 2D Sonic games before this one.

I wouldn't say this is the worse sonic game I played but this is the worse 2D sonic I played so far. Some level design are but some aren't. The Final boss got me frustrated so far which this isn't fun to me when it come to sonic games. Some music are alright but still prefer Sonic Mania OST. Not a big fan of this game.

I agree to most reviews, this game could be really good if not for the bosses. All bosses are too long and annoying. I'm giving it a good rating for the levels, but it is actually more of a "meh" rating.

fun. FUCK the 5th emerald stage bro. all the other special stages are piss easy but istg the 5th one in particular just fucking sucks. the tether in that one sucks i actually think its bugged. only beat it by sheer luck. other than that its a fun time, i like how each emerald gives you a different power, makes the game stand out from the other classics mechanically. similar enough while still keeping its own identity. but FUCK that 5th emerald special stage bro. dear lord.

I've been a Sonic fan since I was three years old, and I can't say there's not a lot to love here- but a lot of the soundtrack, the bosses, the level gimmicks and the frankly unfair deaths in the back fourth or so of the game made this experience overall frustrating and at times just frankly unfun. I always go back to Sonic games to play them over and over, but I really doubt I'll be playing much of this one again.
I hate that I have to say that. I really, *really* wanted to love this one. If you're a diehard Sonic fan, you'll find something to love about Superstars. Trip is precious and a great addition to the cast, the animated cutscenes and intro are gorgeous, the physics largely feel accurate to the classic games, the models are clean and spot on- I just really can't recommend it to anybody else. This game was built for four players, and it shows. Solo, it's a frustrating experience.

I really don't understand the amount of hate this game gets. It's a fun experience, though I do acknowledge its flaws. Let's start with the positives:
The graphics are gorgeous, from start to finish. The reimagining of 2D Sonic into 3D is beautifully done, and the overall look of the game is quite nice. The controls are solid, though they could be a bit more polished. I played at 144fps, and I did notice that the spin dash feels a bit broken at higher frame rates, but it's not a major issue and doesn’t make the game unplayable.
Performance-wise, I've seen complaints about the game's launch, but as I write this review, I haven't encountered any major issues myself. The stages are fun to play, and while the Chaos Emerald powers are a great concept, they feel somewhat limited and situational. My favorite power was "Slow Time," but it’s one of the last abilities you unlock. I really wish we could have selected which powers we wanted from the start. It would have been great if we could choose abilities when we collect the Chaos Emeralds, and unlock additional powers (and the Super Sonic form) once all seven are collected.
Speaking of the Super form, it’s actually really well done. It doesn’t feel janky and is a solid power-up when you unlock it. However, the "Extra" power feels rushed and janky. It's more of a novelty and doesn’t have much impact compared to the other abilities.
And speaking of jank, Sonic games are infamous for their quirky bugs, and this one is no exception. I’ve encountered some odd polygon collisions, weird animation transitions, and even a few missing textures. Nothing game-breaking, but it's definitely noticeable.
Now, the co-op mode... oh boy. Sega marketed the game heavily around the co-op feature, but this is where the jank really shows. The idea is cool, and when it works, it's fun to race around with a friend in local co-op. However, the camera is a nightmare, and there are bugs everywhere. If one player even slightly leaves the camera’s view, they get “disconnected” and have to respawn near their partner. It’s frustrating and poorly implemented.
As for the bosses, I’ve seen a lot of complaints, and I agree. They’re boring, especially when playing solo. They were clearly designed with four players in mind, so fighting them alone feels like a chore. The final bosses: Eggman and especially Fang are rage-inducing. Too many cheap insta-kills and memorization-based patterns. Sonic bosses were never the highlight of 2D games, but Sonic Mania had some great ones, and this game falls short in that area.
All things considered, I’d give it a solid 6/10. It’s not a bad game, just very average for a Sonic title. It's definitely not better than Sonic Mania, which remains a masterpiece. At full price, it feels overpriced, definitely grab it on discount, like I did.

After playing the main part of this game. I can finally talk about it.
I have no idea what you guys are playing, but I enjoyed this game. This game isn't "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" (You can only catch lightning in a bottle once), but it is still very enjoyable. The best way I can describe this game is, "New Super Mario Bros 2" but with Sonic. It's basically everything you love about the classic games without the fluff. As for a reference to what this game feels like, it feels like Sonic CD with some S3&K sprinkles added.
Everything is good, but here are some issues I had with this game. On higher framerates, the spindash doesn't work correctly. This might sound like a major issue, but you can fix it by setting the game to its base 60 FPS. if you can stomach a Sonic game at 240 FPS, you need to be in the military because no regular human being can handle that. Also, the music is a bit weird. It's not bugged, it's an issue with the stylistic choice. Don't get it twisted, the songs are great, as Tee Lopes and Jun Senoue worked on it. However, there are three types of styles in this game for some reason; Mania-Tee Lopes, Genesis, and Forces. No idea why they did that but hey, at least the music still bangs. I also hear a lot about the boss fights. I have no idea what they are on, because the fights are fine with me. I am assuming people are mad they can't cheese them like in the original games, which is untrue anyways because you absolutely can with the "emerald powers" you get throughout.
Now, the price. This is a make it & break it for some. To me... it's a bit too high. This game costs more than Sonic X Shadow Generations at it's base price. I'd say wait for a discount. It's great, but not worth $60.
Other than that, I recommend it for those that want that classic feel with a bit more "NSMB" flair added. It's no Mania nor S3&K, but it sure as shit ain't no Sonic '06.
New Super Sonic Bros. 3 - 4 Super Stars
SEGA's attempt to make the next generation 2D Sonic game had great intentions with some good things going for it, but ultimately falls short of greatness.
When it comes to the play control and game feel, it's pretty much spot on. If you've played the classic Mega Drive games or Mania, you should know exactly what to expect. Rolling down slopes feels natural, you gain speed from momentum and I had no issues lining up jumps. It all works and feels great.
This game has four playable characters. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles I have zero complaints with. They play exactly how you expect them to, complete with their signature moves and abilities. Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and climb walls, while Sonic can drop dash. All three provide some variety to the game with each having their own pros and cons while keeping the core focus of the game intact.
Amy Rose, much like in Origins Plus, is the worst character in this game and lacks everything that made her unique back in Sonic Advance. In that game, she could use her hammer to attack enemies but couldn't spin jump into them, changing the way you approach the game's levels. Here, all she has going for her is a double jump, an ability Sonic could do with the lightning shield, and holding jump when you land lets you use her hammer. Even Mighty and Ray in Mania had more unique abilities that made playing as them worthwhile.
One of the new additions to this game are the emerald powers. For each emerald you collect, you'll gain a new power you can use once per checkpoint such as slowing down time, creating clones of yourself or shooting like a cannonball. While a cool idea, I rarely ever used them. The liquid power is almost useless as there's very few places you can actually use it in the whole game, creating a vine felt very situational and I never used the Might power once. Selecting powers barely works - my selection wheel often gets stuck when I let go of the right stick, preventing me from using them.
The co-op is insanely broken. The camera always follows whoever's towards the right-most side of the screen, with any straggling players automatically being ejected from play until they press the jump button to return to the action. Given how fast these games play, this will happen constantly and it doesn't make for a fun time if you're playing with family or friends. This has nothing on Advance 3's co-op where everybody had their own screen and only got called to the other player when needed for tag actions.
This modern Sonic game released in 2023 has no online co-op whatsoever for the entire campaign, which is inexcusable as Sonic 4 Episode 2 had this feature back in 2012. Granted, it wasn't great in that game either but at least it was an option. Not that it matters much anyway as this game features levels you can only play as one character with no co-op, and all the post-game content can only be played solo. Co-op was one of this game's main selling points; why even make it co-op when you can't even play a good chunk of it in co-op at all?
I never tried the online Battle Mode for this game, which nobody is playing anyway. This is the only part of the game that can be played online, which makes me question even more why online co-op in the main game isn't possible. This is the whole reason for the Epic Games account requirement to play this game when it launched; it has since been updated to remove the requirement, but even after that they still didn't add online co-op.
The music is a very mixed bag. About half the music is awful and suffers the same problem as Sonic 4's OST in that it tries way too hard to imitate the Mega Drive sound hardware. I wish Sonic Team would stop doing this for their modern Sonic games considering other side-scrollers with modern graphics don't try to sound retro for nostalgia. The main menu and HUB area music are the worst tracks to listen to with their short 10 second loops and ear piercing instrumentation.
The best tracks in the game are when it's not trying to sound like the Mega Drive. Bridge Island and Lagoon City are great highlights for me and makes me wish the entire OST sounded like this. Also, what exactly was wrong with Mania's OST? That game had 2D pixel art but its music sounded nothing like a Mega Drive game, and it was much better off for it as its entire OST was fantastic. Same goes for the Sonic Advance trilogy - they sounded like actual GBA games rather than trying to imitate the Mega Drive.
These are also among some of the worst bosses in the entire franchise. Almost all of them just consist of waiting around and dodging their attacks before finally hitting their weak points. They're not fun at all and can easily drag on for 2-3 minutes which is far too long. I don't mind them being challenging so long as they're actually exciting the entire time. Golden Capital Act 2 is especially bad with how long it takes between phases just standing on a platform avoiding obstacles, which gets boring real quickly. They fail to understand what made the bosses in the classic games or the GBA trilogy fun in the first place.
It's a shame too, because I thought the level design wasn't too bad. Sure, it won't give Mania a run for its money, but they do offer plenty of alternate routes and secret areas to uncover that can make repeat runs enjoyable. There's some cool ideas like the pump in Press Factory Act 1 bouncing you if you're on the ground, Egg Station Act 2 having you play the entire Act 1 backwards under a time limit and Cyber Station as a whole. It's just that I rarely ever want to replay them because the bosses at the end ruin them. Good thing then that Time Attack doesn't feature bosses at all.
That said, it's not without issues. For some reason, some zones only have 1 act, while others have 3 (one act is character specific). Frozen Base Act 2 is wasted by a weird Phantasy Zone shooting level that plays nothing like the rest of the game and should've been an optional mini-game instead. This game also features a HUB area that may as well not even exist. It's just a glorified level select that adds nothing to the game whereas Advance 3 actually required players to explore the HUBs to find different acts and bonus stages to play.
Had this been a A$60 instead of a A$95 game, maybe I wouldn't call this amazing or anything, but I would've given this a cautious recommendation at least. This game is just... okay, but very overpriced. Charging as much as Sonic Frontiers and other AAA games is highway robbery if you ask me considering this feels more like a budget title that can be finished in 3 hours to tide fans over until the next big Sonic game. Those with a Switch should pick up Mario Wonder instead - it had far more content with a lot more originality and actually had online co-op, all at a cheaper price tag than this. Even Mania was priced much more fairly.
If you only have a PC, here is just a short list of great 2.5D platformer alternatives you can pick up on Steam for cheaper:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/35700/Trine_Enchanted_Edition/
The entire Trine series (except 3) allows you to play the entire game in online and offline co-op as well as solo, with tons of secrets to find and multiple playable characters.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/846870/YookaLaylee_and_the_Impossible_Lair/
This game does a lot more to innovate the 2.5D platforming genre, has more content to keep you occupied and with so much more personality throughout.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1730680/Klonoa_Phantasy_Reverie_Series/
Two remastered games for less than the price of one, with captivating stories, well made puzzles and fun boss encounters.
If you're a Sonic fan, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give this game a try. Just wait for a massive sale if you're still interested. For everyone else, give this one a pass. This won't make you a fan of the series at all. Try Mania instead.
