I do not understand the hype. Still only in Act 1, I think, but its just a cinematic with minimal interactivity and agency

It took me way too long to finally finish this game, but it was absolutely worth it. It's emotionally charged, visually stunning, and backed by great gameplay throughout. If you're thinking about trying it, go for it, mon ami!

I am not into turn based games at all, I actively avoid them, but when Baldurs Gate 3 released I gave it a go and it was very good. Clair Obscur Expedition 33, is at the same level in a different way. The first several hours I played I didn’t really get what all the hype was about. Some part of me will always feel that because I don’t connect with these types of turn based games the way some others do, but I will say now that I’ve almost beaten it, it’s a truly remarkable experience. This game is simply different, each element in isolation is familiar and done very well but combined in a way I haven’t seen before. It’s a game that continuously gets better and better as you progress through the world, and for the longest time nothing makes sense, but when things click it’s extremely rewarding and very well done. Tldr, even if it isn’t your play style, it’s worth your time. It’s a true work of art.

So far it's really fun, one of the best turn-based games I've ever played. The story is exciting, the graphics are the same, but the best part is the song/soundtrack from the game is cool.... maybe I'll finish it later when I have time

This game is phenomenal. It turns out that when you let talented developers escape the Ubisoft corporate prison and you just let them cook, you get an actual masterpiece. The art style is breath-taking with incredibly smooth animations, and the story keeps you hooked from the very first minute. The soundtrack is an absolute god-tier masterpiece-it literally gives you chills and fits the whole atmosphere perfectly. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an absolute banger and Sandfall Interactive completely nailed it.

Great art direction and even Better music and ambiance, ruined by poor gameplay that makes me want to rip my hair out. ' Lets give a timer for hitting attacks that causes your character to do more damage but, we'll make parries/dodges pure guesswork for the "chalenge".' Took 25 cinematics and 1h30 min to give me the barest amount of backstory and worldbuilding and slows down the progress immensely because it interupts the combat gameplay for no reason. Tutorial Slams you with a bunch of word mumbo-jumbo and effects without letting you feel it out first. Also, Cinematics are at 30 frames/sec and cause my 5070ti to stutter horribly for no apparent reason. The Overall impression has been a feeling of disapointement, for a game that i've heard so much praise for, feels like people got stuck with "pretty character" syndrome instead of good gameplay design...

Personally as a turn based RPG enjoyer I have to say that mixing real time dodge mechanics into a turn based game feels quite gross to me. Obviously I'm not the popular option by the sheer amount of positive reviews but if the idea of dodge mechanics in a turn based game disgusts you then this definitely isn't for you.

This is a neat game, and you can find a lot of praise and compliments. I also had fun with it, but in this review, I would like to focus on criticism because I hope somebody in the studio reads the feedback, and I’m looking forward to what comes next. The mix between TB and RT in combat mostly works, but there are certain hiccups like not-so-well telegraphed attacks here and there, or infuriating mechanics like Vanish The map doesn’t have player-made markers, and I had to keep notes in a notebook The same with quests, there is no journal With so many build options, it would be nice to have presets of weapons / luminas - manually selecting each thing when you want to experiment is tedious At the end of Act 2, the story takes a turn for the worse and leads to an anticlimactic ending, and the amazing setup from the beginning of the game is ruined Steam Deck “verified” is only on paper; the game looks and runs poorly on the device Highly subjective and unpopular opinion, but the OST with constant operatic singing is tiresome. Still, I will definitely get back for a New Game+ sometime later.
"For those who come after!"
Expedition 33 is probably one of the few turn-based games that I'm genuinely invested in. I love almost every second of it. Incredible soundtracks, interactive gameplay yet strategical, the world's aesthetics, and the dialogue; the banter feels so... how do I say it, like so incredibly organic, especially for modern games, which is something I'm really loving. By that, you can't help but adore each of the characters of this game as you progress. That said, you can tell this is the studio's debut. There are moments where it feels a bit stiff, particularly with the gameplay animations and the transitions between gameplay and cutscenes. The climbing sections, in particular, feel quite clunky and kinda break the game's flow, just a bit, imo. Overall, I really love this game. It's a fantastic start and it truly sets the bar of proving that a modern game still can absolutely deliver such an incredible and impactful experience. Wish the best for Sandfall and their next game to be more awesome!
See things as they are, not how you want them to be...
The most beautiful game I have ever played, in every aspect! I think by now everyone has played or at least heard about Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, but I'm not going to spoil anything about the game in this review. The story is about a group of people living in an isolated town called Lumiere, inspired by France during the Belle Époque. A huge number can be seen on the monolith that the Paintress paints every year, which affects them, so they form a team of expeditioners to sail to her in hopes of killing her and stopping her from harming the people in Lumiere. This year, Expedition 33 is gathering to start the adventure. Will they be able to stop her and live life normally? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735188216 The gameplay is like that of old RPGs, where you explore a world map, travel from city to city, meet people, kill monsters, and upgrade your weapons. The fighting is turn-based, which I'm familiar with. Think of old Final Fantasy games when you play this game. It is clear it was inspired by those old games, and the atmosphere is similar to NieR, which is one of my favorite games. However, there is no manual save; the game autosaves regularly. Whenever you find a flag checkpoint, it will save automatically and let you fast-travel to another checkpoint. Make sure to touch the checkpoint flag whenever you want to save. The combat is turn-based with QTEs, which you can set to auto in the settings if that's not your thing. Each character has a different fighting style and set of skills. The only things I had to do repeatedly were parrying attacks and dodging. I found out that by learning and hearing the attack, it would be easy to parry it. It frustrated me a couple of times, especially with some bosses you can't kill unless you parry them, but you can always fail and learn how to do it next time. The game needs some grinding to kill some bosses. Try not to skip any monsters you see around; kill them to level up and earn new weapons. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735506708 The artwork is outstanding, and every detail in the game is beautiful and meaningful. The color palette chosen for each area is mesmerizing, and the character's design is memorable. This game did something other games in my opinion failed to do. There is no UI and clutter while you are exploring the areas; you just walk around and enjoy each detail without having a health bar, a minimap, or a distracting list of objectives. You have the full screen to yourself and your character, which is a huge plus for me, as it lets me enjoy the environment. The characters' animations and facial expressions are on point; you can see the emotions in their gazes, posture, and voices. The voice actors did an outstanding job capturing the essence of those characters. It felt like watching a movie; in each scene, you could see how they reacted, what they looked like, and how they received each piece of information. This alone makes you want to replay the game to watch those little details. The dialogues are extremely well written. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3735805052 Music is breathtakingly beautiful; each soundtrack is meaningful; the lyrics tell a story and capture the characters' emotions. The game has 154 tracks on the main album alone, worth listening to, and they will actually stick in your head after playing the game. Character development is one of the strong suits of this game; you can see and feel how they bond, how they become stronger, how they hate, and how they grow suspicious. The writing of each character is phenomenal, especially in Act 2. Pros: +Emotional beautiful story. +Outstanding soundtracks. +Beautiful graphics and animations. +Great characters and monsters design. +Phenomenal voice over. +Turn-based combat. +World map. +Fast traveling. +Journal. +Multiple endings. +Collectables. +Cosmatics for each character. +Auto save. +Steam achievements. Cons: - No manual save. The game is unique in that it doesn't explain the story to you directly; it wants you to follow it emotionally and logically, forming theories about what is going on before the grand reveal. I highly recommend not charging and just killing bosses without exploring the world, reading the journals, or speaking to the characters. Those interactions will give you different layers to the story, and you'll understand it more, especially in the last act, where you'll be able to explore the whole map to read more information and learn more about the characters. The game has two endings; it is up to you how you want this to end.
