Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 267:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆ (6/10)
Man, I must be the only person on the planet not to like this game. I heard so much hype, especially around its story and characters. And honestly, that part mostly delivered—the relationship between Kratos and Atreus felt real and emotionally charged, and the voice acting was excellent. But the gameplay, pacing, and overall experience ended up wearing me down more than pulling me in. For me, this one was a case of great narrative buried under combat and puzzles I found frustrating and a game world that felt more confined than I expected.
🌪️ Pros:

A deeply emotional and well-written story. The heart of God of War is its narrative, and it really is something special. The evolving dynamic between Kratos and his son Atreus gives the game weight and complexity you don’t often see in action titles. Themes of fatherhood, loss, and redemption are explored with genuine care, and the Norse mythology backdrop adds a fresh and rich setting that’s both mysterious and immersive. I appreciated how the story took its time to develop these elements without rushing or oversimplifying.

Exceptional voice acting that breathes life into characters. Christopher Judge’s performance as Kratos is nuanced, bringing a quieter, more reflective side to the typically gruff warrior. Atreus complements this perfectly with a believable mix of curiosity, frustration, and growth. Even minor characters are so lively.
🚧 Cons:

Combat felt boring and didn’t suit my tastes. I’m not generally a fan of hack-and-slash gameplay, and God of War leans heavily into it with fluid but intense combat encounters. While the system is mechanically solid and offers variety, I found the pace exhausting rather than exhilarating. The constant barrage of enemies and the need to master combos, dodges, and timing felt more like a chore, often leaving me, paradoxically, bored.

Performance issues and fuzzy visuals on Steam Deck made the experience rougher. Playing on Steam Deck was a mixed bag; the game suffered from noticeable texture fuzziness and occasional lag spikes. These issues dulled the visual impact of an otherwise gorgeous world and made some combat moments feel sluggish and less responsive. While not game-breaking, it definitely detracted from my overall enjoyment.

Puzzles were frustrating roadblocks, not rewarding challenges. The puzzle design in God of War often felt like a speed bump in an otherwise narrative-driven experience. Many puzzles were obtuse or repetitive, requiring trial-and-error more than logical thinking, which made progressing tedious. I also really hated those stupid bell ringing chests, which required timing, my least favourite mechanic. (And yes, I know, you don't have to do them. But I wanted to.(

Surprisingly linear world and progression limited exploration and freedom. I went into God of War expecting a semi-open world with lots of freedom to explore, but the game’s structure felt far more linear than anticipated. Although the environments are beautifully designed and detailed, the path you follow is mostly set in stone, limiting opportunities for discovery or meaningful side content. For someone who enjoys games that reward curiosity and exploration, this felt constricting and a bit disappointing.

The overall experience just didn’t click for me. While the narrative and characters showed real promise and emotional depth, the gameplay loop never fully engaged me. Between the combat that didn’t suit my preferences, performance struggles on my platform, and puzzles that dragged on, I often felt more drained than excited. I respect why this game is beloved by many, but personally, it fell short of my expectations and left me feeling lukewarm.

Playing this game makes me miss my dad.
Watching Kratos and Atreus together reminds me of us. The way Kratos struggles to show how much he cares, but still tries to protect and teach his son it feels familiar.
It makes me think about the times I had with my dad. The quiet moments, the lessons he gave without many words. I wish I could talk to him again, or just be with him, even in silence.
This game isn’t just fun, it brings back memories.

I'm not that big on the gameplay side and the over-the-shoulder camera, but the story, characters and the world carry it pretty well. Rich and visually pleasing.

Boy i enjoyed this journey for second time playing (first time on pc)
it is 100 out of 10 but it lacks big fights from old god of war games, dragon fight was so good it gave me taste and said oh it was a demo big fight ugh... Nevermind.
Its a good game, good story telling, no repetitive overdoing like ubisoft does, more you progress more depth and options begin to uncover in the end you have fun exploring dont feel forced to it. Good game Good storyline, Good Lore and an amazing gameplay.

This game has very satisfying and very interactive combat. Everything is a treat to look at and the gameplay is just designed to make you feel powerful like kratos naturally would.

After years of internet memes and cultural references, I finally decided to experience my first God of War game firsthand. Having watched full playthroughs of cinematic games like The Last of Us and Uncharted, I knew this would be a movie-like experience. I deliberately avoided spoilers.
Is this game worth playing? For the story alone, yes. For the gameplay experience? For me, it was a mixed bag.
The story is exceptional. Every part of the storytelling - the characters, world-building, music, and cinematics - feels like experiencing a premium HBO series. I was hooked, anticipating what would happen next. The father and son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus and their journey is peak game cinema and justifies the game's legendary status.
However... the game has a chronic tendency to waste your time. The difficulty scaling doesn't make sense to me - yes the enemies do special attacks more often, but hey also just become damage sponges with inflated health bars. When upgrades are essentially stat buffs that accomplish the same thing as lowering the difficulty (as enemies just have less health, so technically you do more damage), what's the point of the upgrades?
The "challenges" aren't challenging - they're time-consuming map detail hunts for obscure hidden objects that make puzzles obvious once discovered. Boat rides are great at first to seeing the world, but quickly become mind-numbing going back and forth. The door animations serve as disguised loading screens, and the climbing sequences are nothing more than "hold forward and spam jump button".
Despite the skill variety, the combat never delivered for me. I didn't feel like a god of war; I felt like someone slowly chipping away at health sponge enemies.
God of War to me is exceptional storytelling wrapped in tedious gameplay padding. Would I recommend watching a YouTube playthrough instead? 50/50. If you have the time and patience for the gameplay, the experience is worth having. But it feels like you won't miss much by experiencing this incredible story through a well-edited playthrough video.

Always loved classic God Of War games. In my opinion GOW 2 is still best and my favorite. But man... This game? What I love most about this masterpiece is the people behind it. Within just the first hour of playing you can really tell that the incredible team at Sony Santa Monica poured their hearts into this game. Within a short period of time we are introduced to new and yet familar Kratos and his son Atreus. The combat feels fresh and as fluid as ever. But nothing and I mean NOTHING beats the feeling of throwing the Leviathan (Kratos Axe) for the first time only to recall it and feel a slight rumble in the controller as you catch it makes you feel like you are actually Kratos. The greatest part of this game is getting to watch and experience the relationship between Kratos and Atreus grow and evole into one of the most epic Father/Son stories told of all time. What blew my mind was that a game that has rougly a 20-25 hour story plus with an additional 10-15 hours of side content to tackle is that it is all done in one seemless shot. Thats right no breaks to cutscenes, no loading screens, nothing! Apart from when you die of coarse. I can honestly tell you there were times that I wasnt sure if I was supposed to controll Kratos or if it was a cutscene because they are both as one when it comes to God of War. Even as the end credits roll you are never taken away from the game. That's right it throws you right back into Midguard to finish any unfinished tasks you may need to complete. I have played every entry in the God of War series and I can honestly say this is their greatest one yet. From its gripping and appealing story, incredible scense of immersion to its fluid and addictive combat it is safe to say Sony Santa Monica has officially set the standard of single player games to a whole new level and has changed the way we play games forever. So thank you to everyone at Sony Santa Monica for this incredible experience. Still not played Ragnarok but I will. Also I hope Kratos will travel to Egypt. Please Santa Monica listen the fans!

This game is an absolute chore. I don’t know what everyone else is playing, but what I experienced was not a good game. It’s a painfully slow, overhyped, glorified movie that forgot it’s supposed to be a God of War game.
Gameplay? Practically Nonexistent.
The "puzzles" are pathetic—just repetitive axe-throwing garbage. Combat? Clunky, slow, and incredibly frustrating thanks to the awful over-the-shoulder camera that completely kills your spatial awareness. You can’t see anything coming from behind you, and the fights end up being a constant mess of getting blindsided and fumbling with controls that feel like molasses. It’s a downgrade in every way from the older titles.
Let’s be honest—this isn’t a game, it’s an “interactive experience” for people who want to feel deep without actually engaging with gameplay. If you like pressing buttons during cutscenes and pretending you’re involved, congrats—this is for you. For anyone expecting this game to be a God of war experience - Skip.
It’s pretty, sure. It sounds good, sure. But I’m genuinely angry I fell for the hype. I wish I could refund it, forget I ever played it, and get those hours back.

Well after about 10 playthroughs on God of War (2018). PS4, PS5 (after patch for 60 fps) Steamdeck and PC. I can certainly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys a rich story and awesome visuals. I don't know what it is about this game but I just keep coming back to play, simply to re-experience the story. If I could erase a game from my memory and replay it for the first time, it would be this game.
