boss fights are a drag now and for some reason the update just resets my whole entire save. i played in 2023 but i wouldn't say this game is worth it coming back a year later.

I think that people are talking trash about this game because a youtuber started it, and that video got popular so everyone started looking at this game critically. I think it is a good game, not perfect but just good. It is not a must to try it, but it is definetly somwhere on the good games list.

I should have been more skeptical before purchasing, and regret that my refund window has expired.
There was a time when 'aesthetic indie charm' truly represented a passionate devotion to overall quality. Now, the 'indie' category is slowly being invaded by devs willing to milk that sentiment for everything it's worth. More concerning is the willingness to shamefully imitate the aesthetic and gameplay of successful predecessors, while being egregiously worse in every way. Games like this aren't standing on the shoulders of innovative ancestors, they instead leech to their backs.
Ak-xolotl is a defining example of this; it's soulless. It slops the nostalgic Castle-Crasher indie-meme aesthetic atop an unflattering, shallow imitation of the Gungeon/NT formula. If this came out 10 years ago it would be benign - but it offensively brings nothing of value after it's won the cash bid for your attention.
There's no price point to justify this game's existence, and it would take years of updates and content before it could either earn its own identity, or catch up to Enter the Gungeon.
As I write this, ETG is on sale for $5.00. Skip Ak-xolotl and play that instead.

This game had a rocky launch, many players said it was one of the worst rogue-likes in the genre, so I slept on this game for just over a year. When I decided to play this for the first time game in the last few months, I was amazed on how fun the game was! It is relatively simple and seems to take inspiration from countless games in the genre, which it happily pays homage to with in game references, like The Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, and Nuclear Throne. Where the game enters into its own, however, is the unique bosses, items that are specific to this game, some of which, there are not easy comparisons to in the games it takes inspiration from, and cutesy gun-slinging innocent creature art style.
There are still a few things still frustratingly left unpolished, some of which, the games it takes inspiration from, have done many times better:
There is the lack of variety in bosses. In the first region, there are 2 different bosses to encounter. In later regions, there a 2 different bosses but you can choose which boss by choosing which path to follow.
Then there are the lack of variety with room layouts and enemies that can appear.
There is a lack of clear game progression. Sure there are SO MANY things to buy in the hub to unlock, but with higher difficulties which the player has to choose what challenge modifiers, there doesn't seem to be any way to track how many times you've beaten a certain tier of difficulty, like marking down you've done it with certain characters or being rewarded with achievements/unlocks for beating the game with certain challenge modifiers or difficulty levels, which can make it confusing on what the difficulty scaling setting should be at.
There are things to unlock in the game, which do LITERALLY NOTHING EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD TO OBTAIN IT, most notably, The Nugget Shop.
I still recommend this game after saying all that. Wait to buy it on sale, however. It's fun, it's challenging, and just like any good rogue-like, it has fun items and weapons to explore.

Underrated Game, Highly recommend the cartoon style game with some violence mixed in.
Granted it can be difficult until you've practiced enough.
