This game is awesome. It's a traditional roguelike: permadeath ascii/tilemap dungeon crawler that requires a lot of experience to beat. But it feels a little bit different. Fight is always risky, and it's very difficult to just ram to the finish line. Sneaking, hiding and running away is usually the best strategy. There is a lot of loot, but storage and equipment slots are tight and there is no room for it. It provokes interesting choices, but also feels very restrictive. You need to know from the very beginning, what build you are aiming for.
And there are a few possible builds. You can invest into armor and guns. You can hack terminals to get intel, decrease alert level and recall squads that are after you. You can even hack robots. You can get a lot of sensors to see your opponents and maneuver around them. You can go melee. You need to choose one of 5 categories of propulsions: some are heavy with a good support, some are flexible, with a dodge bonus, some are fast but vulnerable. There are a lot of things to try in this game.
I think the game does not aim to make a deep story, but it's not completely neglected. You can find some information about the history of Earth, humans, and the place you are. There are also a few hidden gems in the game, like strange locations, factions and predefined events. As far as I know, there are a few endings, but what can I know … I didn't see any (damn, this game is hard).
You can choose between ascii and tilemap mode. I think both are visually appealing. I find ascii mode especially gorgeous. it doesn't look like an old console: there are nice animations (I mean ascii animations) of shoots, explosions, etc.
I was worry, that the game was dead in alpha state, so I did some small research. The game still gets some updates from time to time. Author makes a blog and YouTube videos about the game and this project looks still alive. According to the author, they spent over 1300 h on the game itself this year, plus over 600 h on community work around the game (source: post "year-11-of-the-cogmind" on his blog). When I had a problem and asked on r/cogmind the author himself responded in 24h. That said, this is already a very mature game. I think it's definitely worth the money.
