Recommended, if you want to play an interactive book in an old school cRPG style. It's one of the holy trinity of Infinity Engine games (together with Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale), but much more story focused. There is some fighting, but mostly around locations with respawning mobs, it's probably just to throw some combat-minded players a bone. At least spell effects are beautiful, though be warned that higher level spell animations are short movies - everytime you cast them. Clearly inspired from classic Final Fantasy games, they are absolutely over the top. There is enough fighting to give us a break from reading, in case of difficulties you can abuse Morte's taunt. He's also a great and well written companion, so make sure to keep him in your party. Plot offers a big variety in how you want to lead your character, you can finish the game as good, evil or between with additional law/chaos axis. Trigger happy evil guys are not recommended, though, it will most likely get you mazed or permanently killed if you step on wrong toes of a powerful being, you can also end yourself locked out of main quest with a non-standard game over. Usually you are warned at least once or twice, but overall game expects that you have a brain and will punish you for extreme lack of common sense. The main cast is also very unique, everyone has a backstory or hidden depths to them. There are exceptions, but still memorable in a special way. Some companions are quite out of the way, you might skip them if you are not careful, but the "core" party should be quite clear. You will spend a lot of time talking to them, which can influence their morale, disposition and powers. They have feelings too, so acting like a massive asshole towards them can make you lose them. You can still have companions even when playing evil (nearly all of them are neutral in one shape or form), they will be more "tormented", but avoid going too far. Artstyle and soundtrack still keep up in current age, though certain characters are portrayed with some ridiculous clothing (or lack of it) in the journal, these were much simpler times. Overall, if you are looking for a more cerebral experience than just playing online shooters, then this is a must have cRPG to check out, a true classic.
