I would give this game an honest 6/10 in its vanilla state, and as high as 7.5/10 with balance and bug-fixing mods. Now, let’s get into the details.
The game is quite messy when it comes to technical aspects. There are memory leaks, random sound mutes, and the game often switches to windowed mode after pressing Alt+Tab. One of the “Hang Time” achievements is also impossible to unlock on PC without external edits, as it requires you to rotate the Nomad back, which isn’t possible on PC with a keyboard and mouse – this option is only available on controllers.
Optimization is poor. After several sessions in Andromeda without dying, the game started to lag terribly, and nothing seemed to help. Restarting, deleting files, resetting the PC – none of it worked. Do you know what fixed it? I randomly died trying to get an achievement, and the game returned to normal. These kinds of glitches are simply unacceptable in a AAA game from 2017.
Next, the progression mechanics and rewards system are lacking. The augmentation system is simply pathetic. Aside from special augmentations, you get common ones that provide a mere 2% damage increase of a certain type. You can only try out new augmentations by destroying and crafting the same equipment piece again, which prevents fun experimentation with the system. This also creates imbalance when choosing armor, as armor with four pieces is always better than armor with two pieces due to having three special augmentation slots instead of one, along with more common augmentation slots.
The profiles are interesting, adding special moves or bonuses, but maxing one out to level 6 is a huge grind, and you still get tiny bonuses like +10% weapon damage at max level. On Insanity difficulty, you won’t even feel the progression.
Regarding advanced gear, you gain access to gear at level V when you reach character level 30, but you can only access advanced gear at level X at level 81. This is already a huge gap, but the worst part is that, for example, the Heleus Defender armor gives +15% damage at gear level V, while at level X, you get +25%. On higher difficulties, you won’t even notice the difference, and the grind to reach that point is enormous. Sure, I want to grind for 40 hours just to get an additional 10% damage bonus after reaching gear level V. It's just a useless system.
Now, let's talk about AVP and strike teams. These systems are just filler in the game. The rewards are so small you won’t even notice them. I did these only for the achievements. For example, from a strike team mission, you get about 56 credits, and you won’t always succeed. Honestly, getting a junk weapon and selling it is much more worthwhile. AVP rewards aren’t any better either. You can get 100 research data of only one type, while scanning an alien’s butt gives you the same amount. So why are these even in the game? This applies to all rewards from these mechanics.
Facial animations are awful, just like the vanilla character faces.
As for driving, I’ll never understand why we have two different driving modes: one for flat terrain and one for climbing. It’s unnecessary, but not a major issue.
Powers on high difficulty don’t do much damage. They’re only useful for tactical purposes. Also, most weapons are useless, except for the Valkyrie with Augments, the Black Widow, and the Cryo Gauntlet.
Regarding the open world and exploration, I really liked it. Clearing all the planets and achieving 100% viability was enjoyable until I realized that there are tons of worthless fetch quests. The moment I figured that out, I stopped doing them and focused only on the ones necessary for planet viability and loyalty missions. These quests often felt like Ubisoft-style filler content.
Character creation makes it difficult to create a good-looking Ryder.
Companions are utterly useless in combat on the highest difficulties. They just die and become more of a nuisance than a help.
In terms of character writing, I really liked Drack and Jaal, especially in their duo interactions. Vetra and Peebee were fine—nothing special, but likable. Cora was somewhat disappointing, mostly just crying about not being a Pathfinder. As for Liam, he was so unlikable that I skipped all his dialogue. I only interacted with him during the loyalty mission for the achievement. Honestly, Lydia from Skyrim has more personality. I wouldn’t be surprised if BioWare named him “Generic Human NPC Follower” in the game files.
Multiplayer is just there to take your money through microtransactions. I played it a bit for the achievements, but it’s boring. Your skill doesn’t matter as much as your gear, and you can’t choose your skills since every character has predefined abilities. You can clearly see that it’s pay-to-win.
As for achievements, as I mentioned, the “Hang Time” achievement is impossible to get on PC without external help. And the “Friendly Fire” achievement, which requires letting Remnant VI attack every Remnant type, is also frustrating. I completed it, with Remnant VI attacking every Remnant in the game, including three different Architects, but then I looked it up online and discovered that you need to command him to attack. I had already killed all the Architects by then, so I was locked out of the achievement. Strike team achievements are pretty much just about daily logging into the game. "Matchmaker" makes you save at exact moments or play the game three times just to see cringe-worthy romance cutscenes. It’s just dumb.
Getting back to multiplayer, the game forces you into it by letting you unlock difficult achievements more easily just by playing multiplayer.
Mining and flying mechanics were also downgraded from ME3. It just takes more time and is overall more boring.
Now, for the good parts. Combat is where the game really shines. Initially, it was frustrating due to unbalanced beginnings and useless companions. BioWare wanted to show me "the definition of insanity", but once I understood that combat in Andromeda was meant to be more dynamic than tactical (like in the trilogy), I started having fun. Combat became enjoyable, and it only improved from there. I love how many abilities, special buffs (like different jumps or blinks), and combos you can use—it all works really well and is fun.
As for the main character, I played as Sara. I’m not sure if Scott is any different, but I liked Sara a lot. If you were hoping for another Shepard, you’ll be disappointed, but she really grew on me. Her incompetence and overall feeling of being lost in what she’s doing actually added to the immersion. After all, she wasn’t meant to be a Pathfinder—at least not yet—and she was just thrown into the role.
The story isn’t anything extraordinary—definitely far from the trilogy—but I enjoyed it as a simple story about space explorers. The climax was enjoyable, but during the last few missions, I kept wondering why they didn’t put more of that epic Mass Effect vibe into the rest of the game. It was only present in the final few quests.
In terms of graphics, I liked them. The planetary terrain looked really beautiful at times.
I also liked that you don’t choose a class. Instead, you choose skills and a profile, allowing you to create any combination you want. This made me experiment, and some combos were really fun to use.
You may wonder why I rated it 6/10 despite mentioning so many cons and so few pros. The reason is that the cons are small issues that, on their own, would be unnoticeable, but together, they really affect the experience, and I can’t just ignore them. However, the moments when the game really shines are the ones that make you want to keep playing. The sad part is that many of Andromeda's problems could’ve been solved in a day with some number tweaks, but EA stopped supporting it once the game didn’t meet its expected profit, and no one played multiplayer.
After all, I can definitely recommend this game, but it’s better to buy it on sale and play with mods..
