12 is Better Than 6 is a top-down western shooter developed by Ink Stains Games and published by Pinkapp Games. Right off the bat, if you love Hotline Miami, buy this game, trust me.
STORY
You follow the story of a mexican and his adventures in Texas, where he meets various characters and helps them any way he can. As you can see, the story is pretty simple, but it is also told really well and I had fun following it. I thought that the writing was pretty clever in some parts, and really bad in others. It is not the focus of the game, and only western fans will find enjoyment from it.
GRAPHICS
The hand-drawn characters and levels are really gorgeous to look at. At first you will not tell apart an enemy from an object, but after a while you get used to it. Every time you kill an enemy, his dead body is covered in red, and at the end of every level you admire the gory painting that it has become.
The level design is mostly good, but after a while it tends to get repetitive, with only small variations of three levels: town, outdoor (forest/desert), mines. Still, they are nicely detailed with some good secrets in them.
GAMEPLAY
The game is very similar to Hotline Miami: you have to kill everyone in a level, you die from one or two hits, and you can stealth your way through by using a knife. The main difference is the focus on gunplay: you can use a revolver, a shotgun, a rifle or a bow, as well as dynamite. In order to shoot, you have to hold RMB to c0ck your gun and then shoot. You can also unload the guns of your enemies to recover the bullets left in the chamber in order to have more ammos in case you need to reload.
In some areas there are also "repetitive tasks" that you can perform, which is usually playing some levels trying to find a chest full of gold. Said gold can be used to buy perks that improve your characters, like having more ammos or more life.
I really had a blast playing through this game, and if you like the genre you will most certainly enjoy this one as well.
CHALLENGE
I died quite a lot, especially in the earlier levels, but I never got frustrated like I usually did in Hotline Miami, because most of the times you can find a corner and keep shooting at all the enemies that are coming your way. I did however find the Arena Mode nearly impossible to play, and it was the only time I rage quit from the game. Other than that, I find it more forgiving than Hotline Miami, and using stealth is always the best option available.
SOUND
The soundtrack is a good blend of classic spaghetti western and rock. I also really loved the sound effects of each gun, as well as the noises that enemies make when shot dead.
REPLAYABILITY
You have 46 pretty easy Steam achievements to unlock, perks to buy, an endless Arena Mode, and multiple hidden hats to find that will keep you playing this game for many hours.
Overall, if you like Hotline Miami, fast-paced action games where you repeat multiple times a level and the Far West, you are going to love 12 is Better Than 6. I recommend buying it at full price.
