Detailed and Positive Review of "12 is Better Than 6"

Developer: Ink Stains Games
Genre: Action, Top-Down Shooter, Stealth
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Release Year: 2015
Introduction:
"12 is Better Than 6" is a top-down action shooter that stands out for its unique aesthetics, challenging gameplay, and immersive atmosphere. Developed by independent studio Ink Stains Games, the game combines stealth elements, intense gunplay, and an engaging narrative, all in a hand-drawn visual style reminiscent of a sketchbook. Set in the Wild West, the game offers a raw and visceral experience, full of tension and strategy.
Gameplay:
The gameplay of "12 is Better Than 6" is simple, yet deeply challenging. The player controls a protagonist in an open world, where every move and decision can mean the difference between life and death. The game requires precision, patience and strategy, as enemies are lethal and resources, such as ammunition, are scarce.
Controls: The controls are minimalist, with the player using the mouse (or analog stick) to aim and shoot, while moving through the environment. The simplicity of the controls contrasts with the complexity of the challenges, which require quick reflexes and careful planning.
Stealth and Action: The game allows stealth approaches, such as sneaking up on enemies or eliminating them silently, but also offers moments of intense action, where the player must face multiple opponents in frantic shootouts.
Difficulty: The difficulty is high, but fair. Each mistake can be fatal, encouraging the player to learn from failures and improve their strategies.
Graphics and Visual Style:
One of the most striking aspects of "12 is Better Than 6" is its unique visual style. The game is entirely hand-drawn, with textures that look like they were scribbled in a notebook. This artistic choice not only gives the game a distinct visual identity, but also reinforces the raw and violent atmosphere of the Wild West.
The color palette is predominantly black and white, with red standing out to represent blood, creating a striking contrast and emphasizing the violence of the game world. The settings are varied, ranging from small towns, arid deserts and dark interiors, all rich in detail and atmosphere.
Soundtrack and Audio:
The soundtrack of "12 is Better Than 6" perfectly complements the atmosphere of the game. Composed of songs that refer to the Wild West, with acoustic guitars and melancholic harmonies, the soundtrack increases immersion and tension. The sound effects are equally well-crafted, with gunshots, footsteps and screams echoing realistically throughout the environment.
Narrative and Theme:
The narrative of "12 is Better Than 6" is engaging and full of twists and turns. The player takes on the role of a Mexican fugitive who escapes from prison and finds himself involved in a plot of betrayal, revenge and survival in the wild Wild West. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, with stylized cutscenes and short but effective dialogues.
The game explores themes such as violence, morality and the consequences of choices, creating a narrative experience that goes beyond simple action. The protagonist is not a traditional hero, but rather a complex anti-hero, which adds depth to the plot.
Innovation and Highlights:
Unique Visual Style: The hand-drawn style and minimalist color palette create an unmistakable visual identity.
Challenging Combat: The scarcity of ammunition and the lethality of enemies require strategy and precision.
Freedom of Approach: The player can choose between stealth or direct action, adapting to their play style.
Immersive Atmosphere: The combination of graphics, soundtrack and narrative creates a cohesive and engaging experience.
Conclusion:
"12 is Better Than 6" is a game that stands out for its originality and the way it manages to transform a seemingly simple premise into a rich and memorable experience. With its unique aesthetics, challenging gameplay and engaging narrative, it offers a fresh and dark vision of the action genre and the Old West setting.
Ink Stains Games demonstrates great mastery in creating atmospheres and mechanics that captivate the player, making "12 is Better Than 6" an essential title for fans of indie and action games with a touch of strategy.

Game is alright, story is okeyish spagetti western. Graphics is and style is good looking, but during gameplay sometimes things just blend in and there is big issue with recognition of enemies - hats on the ground and enemies wearing hats look exactly the same and with monochrome palette things do blend in together from time to time. Gameplay is also mid, its not as fast as hotline miami with all the reloads and multiple clicks to fire a gun, but it also doesnt have tactical depth due to dumb enemies. Giving thumbs down more so to balance out all positive reviews. Game is only 5 or so hours to beat and cheap, especially with a discount, so if you'd like to have a game for an evening or two you may by it, but you wont miss anything if you skip it either.
Also have to add that game only has local saves and progress is reset every reinstall and achievements wont complete on linux which can be fixed by forcing it to use proton(which will reset story progress for you).

I enjoyed this game. I like top down shooters. And it's not nearly as hard to finish as many on the market (eg Miami Hotline). The chapters are short and simple. The gun play is cool, as in you have to c o c k weapons before shooting and load quickly between heated exchanges. The timing of cocking and loading is often critical, which makes the game a little more strategic at times and stealth is also important to consider.
The back story has a gritty, grim vibe, there is no good and evil, just various powerful factions carving up America with blood and gunpowder. The antihero is gallow-humored and jaded, his one liners are dark and funny. I imagine some people might find the story not to their taste.
Try it if you like this sort of thing. Buy full price or on sale.
Achievement Hunters: reasonably easy to 100% in 6 hours or so.
