If you came from the first game, you will surely love this sequel that comes with tons of upgrades and quality of life features.
Azure striker gunvolt 2 continues its story from the first game's good ending, this time you'll be able to play as copen, the story's anti-hero whose playthrough is more than just a palette swap of gunvolt; both may share the same bosses but their well-done routes are much different and even their stages' soundtracks are also different. I really loved the soundtracks, it feels as if themselves received upgrades, most of these soundtracks are graved in my memory and they also feel as if they fit in each stage's theme.
I really like how most of Copen's soundtracks have some Synth instruments used in them to give some taste to his young scientist background. The visuals have received a huge upgrade from the first game, although it did annoy me sometimes that the story dialogue is played on the stage and takes a huge chunk of the screen, we have the choice to either disable or enable dialogues at will.
Missions are now automatically activated, you don't need to manually activate them before starting a mission, which is one of the best QoL features we could ever receive, the crafting system is the same but with a small change : you don't need to craft the same item twice in order to upgrade it, instead : equip it and level it up through normal gameplay, I really like this approach but it's a bit slower in comparison to the old system, while the latter required a bit of farming through some RNG, so pick your poison.
Copen's equipment gimmick is well done, giving you a limit on what perks you can equip and giving you also the ability to compress their "memory cells" in order to manage things easily, I like how it is quite different from gunvolt's, And that's not the only different thing about him, Copen pretty much plays like the original Mega man games in the rock-paper-scissors fashion: you get a boss weapon which can be a weakness to another boss.
Due to the nature of having 2 playable characters, you would expect 4 endings, 2 bad endings and 2 good endings, the story is well crafted that both the 2 good endings are canon, and since there aren't really any plot changing collectibles, you get the good endings if you simply finish both playthroughs of Gunvolt and Copen, there is however a fifth ending with a much harder requirement, teasing the existence of the third game.
The game comes packed with DLCs from the console counterpart, which is super neat, you get remixed versions of the levels you already played and depending on which level you chose, you can fight bosses from the first gunvolt game. Sadly the shovel knight bonus fight has been removed, for obvious reasons, and sadly the leaderboards function isn't present in the new port.
I have the feeling that the way this game calculates the scoring has been casualized and made much more easy, on my first playthrough I could manage to get easy S/SS ranks on various levels. Speaking of levels they are well designed but they still keep think air of being straight forward, the absence of puzzles makes it a bit boring in comparison to the first game. There is a speedrunner mode which disables Prevasion, crafting and saving if you want some challenge.
Sadly there is no auto-save function, all the saving is done manually and it kind of sucks because I see no harm in including it, I once lost around 40% worth of quests progress to this lack.
Overall if you are a fan you will absolutely love it, if you are new to the franchise I think you might also enjoy it if you start here. I think I would recommend this game for what you pay for, you get around 40 hours of fun if you go for 100%. 10/10
