While not as good as the dark descent, I still thought this game had some scary moments and a well-paced, intriguing narrative with a satisfying conclusion. A solid 7/10 in my opinion

This game brings back mechanics that made Amnesia: The Dark Descent so popular that were left out in A Machine for Pigs, such as sanity being a crucial mechanic leading to enemy avoidance/darkness avoidance/careful resource management. Story was superbly done, the plot for the two games mentioned prior somewhat flew over my head and wasn't that interesting in those games, but this one does it right and when traversing the underworld it really captures your attention well especially when the baby becomes the focal point in the plot. TL;DR, an A-tier horror game worth playing, especially if you enjoyed the Dark Descent.

This is one of the best games I have ever played, hands down. The story is rich, the voice acting is phenomenal, the environments are beautifully detailed... I could go on forever. 100/10.
Amazing sequel
Amazing sequel. It expands the universe with a lot of good, rich lore and an nice story (it is very interesting and has many characters, but it is less dark and more tragic, so it doesn't leave much room to brutal storytelling like TDD and it is instead very emotional). It brings back the good old mechanics from TDD with some little changes. The atmosphere is tense when it has to be, but it can feel a little different due to not being inside a castle anymore (similar to the transition between Outlast 1 to 2, where you go from being inside a big building to being constantly in the open). But even while being out in the desert and
in the ruins of the other world
, you'll find out that the game is even more linear than TDD, which is a downside for me. The horror is very well executed. In my opinion, it is of better quality than TDD, though perhaps slightly less frequent (I know, we all wanted a little more). Having a pregnant woman with such a deep psychological background as a main character was very unique. The voice acting was amazing. The pregnant woman mechanics were a nice touch (checking your baby as a way to recover sanity rather than simply progressing in the story was a great change in the sanity system. I have seen some people complaining about having to check the baby in the middle of a chase but doing so is completely up to you, so it is not an annoying mechanic at all).
Conclusion
Overall, this is a great game by itself and a very solid sequel with some good additions, some strong points and some other things that we all would've wanted to have but didn't. The bad reviews definitely don't do it justice. It won't disappoint you unless you're a TDD fanboy doomed by nostalgia.

Horror games forever struggle with failure states. I was generally enjoying the game (the fort, as is often commented on, is an excellent part of the game) until I got to The Maze and died. From that moment on, all the tension was gone. Frictional Games have a catalog nearly entirely of Almost Hits. They all have some kind of dire imperfection but I believe they will make a truly great game one day.

I think people have the wrong expectations when entering this game, expecting youtuber/streamer bait but finding a mature story of loss and motherhood instead. That is the story of this game and sometimes it doesn't get wrapped up in a pretty bow. If you already aren't a fan of walking simulator horror then this game isn't going to change that, but be patient and truly digest the weight of the world the story transports to and you'll find a substantial cosmic horror within.
