This is actually one of the greatest Metroid clones ever made. It impressed me 15 years ago and the remaster impressed me all over again 15 years later.
To bad Orson Scott Card is a raging homophobe, but aside from that, great game

Not a very special metroidvania beyond the nostalgia. Passable exploration and atmosphere that might be inspired by the early MGS game, but also 100 percent dumber writing.
Exploration for goodies isn't that rewarding. You can increase your grenade carry limit so much before you hit a point where its difficult to run out pf them between save points, and then your grenade carry limit doesn't matter anymore.
There is a little bit of stealth. Not a lot, but this is rare in a metroidvania game, so its good. Unfortunately the game has the worst bosses I have ever encountered. Many of them feel very lazy. Some of them feel like puzzles---but not particularly rewarding ones, like the Axiom Verge bosses. They're just very, very simple and don't feel like bosses at all.
It's fun though. Get it on sale if you're a fan of the genre
