- In-cab dynamic brake 'running' sound starts immediately instead of after the 'power-up' sound when the handle is engaged. No external dynamic braking sound, or it at least doesn't play consistently.
- Livery looks pixelated on the ends, like it was drawn at a very low resolution and scaled up.
- Top speed of 64.2 mph. In reality these were geared for at least 70 mph.
- Headlight flare disappears when the camera moves close to it.
~ Horn sound has an abrupt transition between the 'start' and 'loop' sound clips, but it doesn't sound bad, just like it has a high pressure threshold before it 'opens'.
~ No extra stock and no loco variations (including no snowed-over model in winter); very sparse for a DTM release but not abnormal compared to other developers.
+ Excellent engine sounds.
+ Opening the engineer's door affects outside noise.

The DRGW SD50 is a good addition to your own collection. Since it was developed by Digitial Train Model (DTM) it comes with a lot of features that aren't found on many of the other US DLCs created by the developer, Dovetail Games. It has the same awesome sounds as the GP50 that was released by DTM but with a different horn and includes a gyre light on the nose. The paint texture is solid and crisp.
However, it does come with negatives. It has some game breaking bugs in it that make it very difficult to run. You may expierence drops in frame rate if you use some on the interior cab lights. I also would not buy it at full price, you are only getting 1 single locomotive; no rolling stock.
The bugs are too game breaking, and the what you pay for and what you get in this DLC don't weigh properly. You get 1 buggy but sounds and looks really good locomotive. I can't give this a recommendation. 6.5/10
*This does inpact my feelings about this DLC but I wish that DTM & DTG would have also developed the standard cab SD60 which looks identical to this model the only difference is the some exterior grills. All they would have to do is reskin this model, and change the sounds, thats it.

Of all the Rio Grande DLC available on Train Sim Classic, this might be the best one I've played. This isn't anything against the F9s that appear in the California Zephyr add-on, or the SD40T-2s that come with Soldier Summit either, but I kinda like how this DLC turned out. Here's why.
Pros:
-Impressive textures, especially with the paint scheme and mars light. Or Gyralite, whatever you railfans wanna call it.
-The interior design, even though it's a little similar to the SD45T-2s
And the cons?
-The sound effects, especially the horn. Obviously, I don't hate it, given it's a nice-sounding RS3K. But it's not accurate, as the SD50s didn't actually wear those horns in service with the D&RGW and eventually Southern Pacific. The 645 engine sound sounds fine, but much like the UP and NS (High-Hood) GP50s, they're a little noisy.
Overall, I rate this DLC a 8/10. Although the SFX were a little off in a few places, the Rio Grande SD50 still came out mostly sharp.

Out of all US locos this thing looks and quite possibly could be the best in all the DLC's. But, untill the issue of it being the biggest resource hog in the, dare I say, whole inventory of TS DLC's, is fixed this loco will remain unplayed. Not by choice. But, because I can't get better than 7 FPS to 10FPS. And at times as low as 4. Very choppy. Unplayable for me. And some of you intent readers may think " Well this guys system is weak". For those I'll leave System Specs at the end.
I cannot reccomend this DLC as much as I would love to and would also love to drive. Please DTM developers or Dovetail Games fix this DLC. If you have a really huge system then by all means get this DLC. But, if your system is moderate to fairly well built (where I consider mine to be) then be fairwarned of choppy framerates, even to the point of unplayabilty. It's still early with this one. So let's hope it's future is brighter. Peace!

Nice locomotive overall. Looks good inside and out, nice model, paints with lots of switches and lights to operate, most all the controls work from interior. Big plus in those departments. I also have the CSX and Seaboard Systems addon liveries, both look great on the loco as well.
The one area of cons I could list are some of the sounds. The bell is odd but serviceable. Sounds different than I expected. The horn is just bizarre. Sounds like a single note accordion at fairly high pitch. I'm not sure if that's realistic or not, so I defer to the developers.
NOTE: My original review questioned the performance of the loco, but after further testing it seems that the consist I was using for the test was bugged. Either bugged wagon or a set of circumstances affected the entire consist.
Definitely recommend this if you're a locomotive collector. It's not a "pro" loco but the detail and extensive lighting system makes it feel a notch above standard for sure.

First of all, the Loco is really nice. The detail, sound and functions are great imo. But there is some big problem with the lights. Especially the StepLights. If you turn them on you got a huge framerate drop down to 5 or 10 fps. If you turn on the class lights or head lights there is also a smaller framerate drop. So better don´t drive this Loco at night or WATCH THE STAIRS with a flashlight^^

Nice engine, has lots of power, sounds are pretty good ,engine sound is great sound like some real power there, Horn is good and the paint job is clean and crisp. But on so many of these dlc engines alot of stuff thats suppost to work dosent't. Cab light button dosen't work, so no cab light, windows won't open, door sosent open and so on. I'am tired of these IT people not paying to these ,what seems small details but nun the less important. Why? Because we paided for it with our hard earned cash.Thier work is incompete and shoddy because of it and I'am a bit fed up with it. i don't think I'll be buying any more unless they step up thier game and start doing a better job and giving us what we pay for.

Great rig. It does pretty much resemble the SD-45 with looks and the features like doors and windows opening and the Gyra light. Sounds are good but what you expect from DTG. There is a slight glare on the 2,4,8 & 10 o'clock postions on the speedo being a white back. It may be hard to see the speedo. The other thing that I don't like to muc but not a big deal is the "Class" lights only light up in white and don't have the option for red which is good when it's a rear DPU. Engine seens a bit low in volume but maybe it's just my speakers. Number lights have a individual switch for the front and rear.
It's a fantastic train but honestly it's pretty much a SD-45 with some slight differences. I would recommend this. I would recommend this even more if you get it when it's on sale.
