PROS:
- "CHOOSE YOUR OWN PATH" HEAVEN
- AMAZING AND UNIQUE IDEA
- BEAUTIFUL SOUNDTRACK AND ARTWORK
First of all, this soundtrack will stick with me in my head until the end of time. It's so pretty!
The artwork is also beautiful, her outfits are adorable, and the fact that you can become a magical girl is so awesome!
Just for the last reason, it is a very niche and magical experience. However, this game altogether is an experience I just cannot find myself to like if provided almost anywhere else.
But I know a review can't solely be about the ideas and the cosmetics. So how is the story and the gameplay?
This game has so many choices and routes that you think would be a small thing, but they each truly end up causing a tsunami of events as you go so you definitely have to make sure you are careful! I personally love that your actions can end up drastically changing the story and I'm still finding new stuff to this day! That is something many, many games (even those beloved.. looking at you TWD....) definitely fall short of reaching in terms of potential.
If i had to try to compare to a game that would reach any sort of level of divergent paths that this game does, I would possibly say Detroit Become Human. And even then, it's leaps and bounds beyond THAT in terms of the sheer butterfly effects.
CONS:
- CHARACTERS & RELATIONSHIPS
- ROUTE SHOWS RESULTS MOSTLY ONLY LATE GAME OR IN THE EPILOGUE
The game establishes these people matter with titles and internal + external politics, but there have actually been very little times where I was made to grow attached to any of these people emotionally. This is since Elodie interacts with all characters in bits and pieces in a very superficial manner. And those bits and pieces can be very split up to the point there have been many times I would randomly see a character again after multiple runs of this game and go "Oooh, you showed up this time!"
I felt that a lot of the relationships and characters, while all very pretty and cute to look at, could be a lot more fleshed out. For example, I thought there was so much potential with Elodie's cousin, Charlotte, and her friend Briony. And also her father, Julianna, the aunt, the cousins.... really everyone! But we hardly genuinely talk or see each of them more than a handful of times. They are treated as disposable dolls should the situation ever show up and are also just EXTREMELY static. Do not hope to get any development until at the very end of the game (with very unique + specific decisions made) or during the epilogue. And even then, it's hardly anything.
And to add on to that last point, I hardly see the culmination of my actions regarding how I treat people or interact with them until the very end! Sure, there are a lot of times combat-wise where if you treat someone in a way they don't want to be treated, it will reflect badly and they will say something in the moment. But for the most part? Most assassinations, wars, treaties, rivalries, and friendships that were chosen by you either end up with you getting killed or just lowers your stats. Decisions with long term repercussions due to how you interact with someone are largely going to happen in the moment or in the epilogue.
Flirt or romance someone? One scene and epilogue. Fund or advocate for a field/person? One scene and epilogue. Treat a family horribly or expose someone's dark secret? One scene and epilogue!
Maybe that's a sacrifice that had to be made in order to fit so many decisions into the game, but I'd like if the developers with any of their future titles can maybe expand on characters and their developments.
..........................
Overall, if you like playing as a magical girl, politics and strategy, being an evil queen, or being beloved by all of your servants, you'll be happy and satisfied with this game! It is fun and it will take an extremely long time for you to run out of new things to explore. It scratches a very unique itch for me that I feel cannot be scratched by anything else at the moment.

This feels like a perfect blend of a visual novel and a rougelike. Lots of re-playability.

I enjoyed the game, as much as it can even be called a game. It's not the most interesting story, but it's good. The impact of the choices is of some interest. Oh, and. At least somewhere I got to be a magical princess.
It looks a little expensive to me, though.
Don't look at the fact that I have 7 hours, 4 of them I've been a dumbass and angry that I'm not getting anywhere. I've been playing for 3 hours. It's enough to pass the game from the second time. You might even get it the first time, if you're lucky.
Kill your family members, persuade a warlord to not invade you by singing, romance someone and then choose to dance with someone else, get so good at magic you cause a catastrophic event, lead your own navy to battle and murder your enemies army. Or, die up to you. 10/10

A melancholic puzzle game disguised as a Visual Novel that contains enough intrigue to keep you interested through the constant anxiety the game induces.
Highly recommend it.

It's just too arbitrary and trial and error. For me, rng and "losing is fun" works in roguelikes but it doesn't work in VN's, which is basically what this is.
So the whole "losing is fun" thing works in roguelikes because you're developing your character and you're in an open world and making tactical decisions about what to do and where to go and which skillset you're going to use to try and navigate a situation and how to maximize your skillset. And when you die (in a good roguelike), you go "yeah, I know exactly what I did wrong and it was avoidable". It works because you make all the tactical decisions and you choose where to go and you're the one responsible for losing or not.
Long Live the Queen on the other hand, you need to be spoiled or you just keep dying. You need to know what events are coming in advance so you know what skills to prepare for them and what moods to set this person in so you can best learn those skills. I've also read that some skills are utterly useless noob traps.
There's no playstyle like in other "losing is fun" games where you say, "Ok, I'm just going to focus on this skillset and play the game using this skillset heavily".... because you don't have different paths to choose from, You just have one event after another placed in front of you and sometimes you just get killed and that's that.
From what I see there seems to be a fair amount of rng, too. You can do all of the above, get the right skills, and still fail the check. In my time with the game this chick couldn't pass a skill check to save her life (literally), even in skills I'd heavily developed her in.
The game has a really nice aesthetic and music and I think that's a big contributor to the review scores. But imo it's really not fun to play.
