Loved this game as a teen but never finished it. Finally went back to replay and get the true ending. Good soundtrack, rewarding exploration. Story was hit or miss for me, and a few of the bosses are pretty unintuitive. Definitely a product of its time, but still fun with some neat mechanics.

i will be a bit biased here since it is my favorite childhood game and i still very much cherish it dearly, but i absolutely recommend it for everyone, like i can't say it enough, this wonderful game is absolutely worth playing. yes, it is a bit clunky and sometimes feels odd or unfinished, but it is an indie project made by two guys, so i think it can be forgiven. the story is mystical, sacred, fairytale-esque, it deals with the themes of divinity, identity, life and death cycle, destruction and creation, and, of course, love. it is obligatory to mention that aquaria's fairytale narrative is intertwined with raw, fantasmagorical body horror. it's organical, it's surreal, it's abjective, and it's absolutely delicious. aquaria keeps you in constant heavy anticipation of a new horror lurking in the ocean's depth. but this game's horror is contrasted by light, lively moments: playfully going in circles with a curious serpentine creature, jumping out from the water to bask in the sun and wonder at the blue sky, stumbling upon a greenery-covered cave with adorable little sprites, riding seahorses and giant turtles, and, most importantly, finding love amongst all the chaos. my beloved fairytale mermaid horror game, you will always be dear to me <3
