I use to play this as a kid back when I was little. I also use to watch my Dad playing this along with Doom, Quake and Half-Life. This is also one of the first games I played on PC and is one of my favorite games of all time. This was basically 'Dark Souls' before Dark Souls existed in a FPS fashion. This was also my most-rented Nintendo 64 game as well! I'd recommend you download the soundtrack and add as a mod and play with GZDoom. This allows current screen resolutions and also controller support. 10/10.

Good Luck On Figuring Out the Level Design Before your 90th Birthday Objective Review 6 of 5 must play. 5 of 5 great story great game-play. 4 of 5 great story average game-play. 3 of 5 average story great game-play. 2 of 5 give it a go if it's you're favourite genre. 1 of 5 play if you have nothing better to do, 0 of 5 play if you're a masochist. -1 of 5 avoid. Hexen: Beyond Heretic score is 0 of 5 Subjective Review My total playtime is well over 40 hours. I switched to the GZDoom equivalent hoping the better graphics and controls would keep me awake, but nope, I'd doze off then wake up running aimlessly into a wall. Here's the thing. I'd find a button or chain, push or pull it, then spend literally hours on that level trying to discover what opened, only to find out by accident, after I'd travelled via another portal to a different level, the button I pushed or chain I pulled opened something on THAT level. Who would ever think that's a clever design for a game? The map doesn't help with this. For hours I'd frustratingly wander in circles. Tedious with a well-deserved capital T. Oh for sure, I loved the first level, but hours later I wished the game had ended there. The hub had me searching for (sometimes never finding) several switches needed in order to open ONE door. Yup. You read that right. Several switches that had to be found before a certain ONE door opened, and that door on an entirely different level, so even when I found them all I'd keep searching not knowing a door opened till I accidentally came across it in my search for more switches. Usually I'd come face to face with a horde of monsters which would convey to me "ahh, a door must've opened somewhere." These switches are not easy to find. Ever heard the saying "it's like searching for a needle in a haystack"? Well this game defines that. I'd find a switch but nothing happened when I'd push/pull it. So I'd have no clue that I successfully found a switch of the seven needed. This design, as far as I got in the game, never deviated. Over and over and over. Now you understand why I'd wake up running aimlessly into a wall.

Wasn't able to finish it before the Remakes, so will go and play remakes now. The game is still great but very confusing in terms of path finding.

Greetings Mortal. Are you ready to die? Stone cold classic. One of the earliest, if not THE earliest first person FPS/Metroidvania crossover. Amazing atmosphere and combat.

Hexen moved the needle from it's predecessor Heretic by adding some compelling new features to the FPS genre. First was the ability to smash windows. That seems silly now, but in 1995 that was a lot of fun.

In 2025, Bethesda released a remastered version of Heretic + Hexen, including all the DLC and two new chapters, which you can find here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3286930/Heretic__Hexen/ Also, if you owned this version of Hexen, then you got the remaster for free. So yay!
