Brutal Legend Reviews

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes.

Need more of this game love the feeling. Also to be able to turn the cursing and gore off and on is great its a shame every game cant offer such simple control like that!!

Great game with an awesome soundtrack that still holds up to this day, thanks to many metal references, good humour, and interesting gameplay ideas.

A love letter to Metal with a surprisingly stacked cast of true legends. The likes of the late Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilminster as well as Tim Curry and Jack Black all make an appearance with the latter playing the main character of the game. Utterly fantastic and genuinely funny. A must play for any metalhead. As for gameplay, while incredibly fun, does not know what it wants to be but that kind of works in this case. It is an open world, driving, hack-and-slash, third-person-view, real-time strategy game. It is weird but in my opinion it fits the games vibe of "Why do it? Fuck you, it's awesome, that's why!" 100% recommend because it is one hell of a laugh!

Fantastic game. Despite its age, it holds up beautifully. The entire premise is amazing, the set pieces and design are all stunning and creative. Voice talent of Jack Black absolutely shines, even though voice lines are repeated often the more you play. The combat of the game can be clunky at times, but the army commanding side of gameplay is, in my experience, very unique and well crafted. All of the collectibles and miscellaneous achievements are fun to scrounge around for and are not overzealous. I don't have interest in the multiplayer mode but I am glad for its existence. Would have enjoyed having the other 2 factions playable in some manner in the main game but it is not a bad experience without them. I enjoyed the few subtle references to Psychonauts, as well as the plethora of cameos. Overall a great dedication to rock as a genre. RIP Ozzy.

Holy shit, i needed to play it 3 times to realize its a metal ISEKAI. And with Jack Black as a main character, also including many (many-many) iconic metal stars of all time in one place. Man this game felt good, but this time I couldn't enjoy the game at all. So negatives, there are a lot of them: - a lot of collectibles, for such somewhat small world and they are not really interesting to collect anyway (also WHY there is no hint how (the button) to collect dragon wyrms and legends???) - note that AFTER finishing the main quest you would be able to purchase a special item that helps finding those collectables, also some collectables appear only after finishing main questlines (like in the cathedral) - for the game with so many collectables, you CANT create your own marks on the map - no minimap too, crucial while you riding the Deuce, and dont want to open big map to be sure you are on your track - red juice screen and regeneration with no real HP indication (meaning - you can't measure danger of specific units, unless you test how many strikes it take for them to kill or red juice you) - same goes for enemies - you can't measure effectiveness of your combos really, unless you diligently test everything, not to mention possible resistances of some enemies to some damage types, if such occurs - with no hp bars tactical game becomes less interesting too, you can't accurately measure each unit effectiveness, since they autobattle with each other, and they only say native hints (like "I would really need a healer right now") - i am not even sure if they regen like Eddie or not and with tens and even a hundred units at once you can't say who is hurt really - also, kinda clunky unit commands to micro your army around (not sure how to make it better so, but its much more complex and time consuming compare to any RTS, to say - this unit guards this place, other goes there, etc) - slippery mountains and killing invisible walls (at least you don't lose progress tho..) AND no jump - NO manual SAVES - only autosave within just 1 profile. If i want to run for the one exact mission again, you have main missions checkpoints. Damn - SO MANY "team missions" that are basically the same. Holy hell its not a MMORPG, but some of them are very grindy and all of them have literally no value to story - VERY LOW distance of LODs, leading to active details like collectibles "spawning" from tens of meters, same goes for enemies - Enemies/neutral spawn - that was annoying as hell. Some enemies just keep returning withing couple of minutes on some spots, not letting to enjoy the landscapes and music itself, to just chill But to have so many flaws its also very good in many ways: + the combat system is ok, you start with simple hits and even on brutal face melting oneshots everything, but it becomes more complex overtime, with buffs, debuffs, healing, aoe attacks, cleansing of effects, different classes of units (melee/range infantry, vehicles, buildings - but again, with raw numbers you need to experiment a lot to find out which counters which, tour book helps a little, but still in terms of strengths and weaknesses) + the music itself - for a person who likes heavy metal (channeling my inner Sheldon: interesting faaact - HEAVY metal is the lightest genre of metal) - this game is a love letter, the classic and idk how but Jack Black and Tim Shafer summoned the whole squadron of superstars. Not all of them can act, but its a HUGE fanservice + the visual design is super cool too, with all those epic volcanoes, rivers of silver, Rockmore mountain, etc So in total, i would say its a must have if you like this kind of music, and its okay for those who neutral, tho most of the fanservice will go over your head (such as mine too T_T), however - i dont recommend this game for those who like to 100% games. The main quest line is good but the collectable and secondary ones are horrendous and will suck your soul and joy out, painfully. The multiplayer is dead too...
Form Over Function
From the brilliant mind of Tim Schaffer comes a game so unapologetic of what it wants to be (which is an homage to everything metal) that it doesn't really concern itself with the fundamentals of what makes a game fun. It goes against every single convention, yet it knows that you'll like it because it's METAL AF. I know I did. This is a rare case of a deeply flawed game, with repetitive missions, nonsensical story pacing, and horrible RTS mechanics tacked on for good measure, carried solely on its aesthetics alone. And guess what. I didn't care! Cue in the epic soundtrack; it's time to slay some demons!

Bought this game when it just came out for x360, and finished it, I think, twice. Then bought it couple of years later for PS3 - again, finishing it twice. Then, I eventually bought x360 again, and bought it again on XBLive, and have finished it at least 3-4 times since. Then when it finally released on PC, I bought it and finished it once on SteamDeck (works perfectly!). Now, I'm replaying it again on desktop. I think, the amount of times I finished it says enough just how well it stood the test of time. Definitely a masterpiece shoulder to shoulder with Psychonauts. I hope at one point, DoubleFine will create a sequel to it, hopefully before I die.
