The game itself is fantastic, but in typical Ubislop fashion the game is a technical dumpster fire. I installed it to my steam deck to try it out, and I disliked how it controlled, so I tried deleting it, only to realize that every time I tried doing so the game would boot up and the menus would be completely broken, necessitating a hard shutdown of the system by holding the power button. Eventually the only way to could figure out how to delete this broken mess from my system was by factory resetting it. I’d say I’m shocked at how broken this POS is, but Ubisoft has ALWAYS done a terrible job at supporting old PC releases of their games, so I suppose the jokes on me for believing otherwise. A shame to, as Far Cry 2 is actually a great game.

Doesn't respect your time. If you die midway through a mission, it sends you all the way back to your last save. Not last checkpoint, last save. As if its a survival horror game or some shish. Too much walking from point A to point B all while get shot by literally every npc you come across. No wildlife. Malaria is a constant barrier for fun. Weapons are constantly breaking like your playing the masters quest of breath of the wild. Weapons jam up way too often. EVERYTHING IS BROWN! Sometimes, even the water is brown. Brown walls, brown dirt, brown bushes, brown guns. The game that a horrible brown and/or piss colored filter. Finding mods to correct that is a requirement! The faction system is kinda cool but everyone talks so gone darn fast that I can't even understand who's a good guy and who's a bad guy. Coupled with the fact that the voice volume is so ridiculously low that playing with subtitles is a requirement! I couldn't find a mod that fixes that. Overall, I would never recommend this game.

This has to be one of the most boring game experiences I've ever had.
The 'characters' were designed very superficially and only to present the moral ambiguity present in the political environment, but that's where it stops. They have no depth otherwise, and it's impossible to care about a single one of them, even the character you play.
The premise of this story has so much potential to be rich and engaging, but is hamstrung by tedious and predictable development and dialogue that will all but put you to sleep thanks to the aforementioned 'characters' attempting fruitlessly to bring it to life.
So since the characters and story are awful, you would think at least the gameplay would deliver. You would be wrong. The game sends you across the entire map for nearly every objective, forcing you to navigate through the same few roads and infinitely respawning checkpoints full of glitchy NPCs that are either completely clueless or are literal gods with the ability to see through walls and never die, and nothing in between. The guns are also something of an enigma. The assault rifle firing pattern is a complete lottery. Countless times, I would single fire rounds through an NPCs skull to no effect. But it's okay, because the ineffectiveness of the rifle is balanced out with the suspiciously accurate hitscan makarov pistol, which seems to do at least twice the damage of a rifle, and is clearly the best sniper in the entire game.
The gameplay loop was apparently designed just to create annoying friction, slowing your progress through the garbage storyline by creating meaningless and unrewarding obstacles between the last character you couldn't care less about and the next character you couldn't care less about. Rinse and repeat.
This game is proof that building one of the most advanced game engines of its time is no guarantee that any game built on top of it would be incredible. Far Cry 2 fell far short of that mark, being no more than a beautiful dumpster fire.
The relief of seeing the credits screen, heralding my release from this hell, ended up being the most enjoyable aspect of Far Cry 2.

Far cry was not good until far cry 3. The intro is broken, everyone was literally jumping 10 feet in the air, and when I tried to uninstall the game it booted up and started playing itself.

One of my all-time favorite games (when I was a college student) <3. Haven't played it in years and I still love all the variety in the game with weapons and vehicles (plus their performance / physics), challenging missions, etc. Most of all I love this game for its atmosphere and music. The only game that competes with this atmosphere is the STALKER series.
The improvement in narrative, dialogue and voice acting compared to FC1 is night and day.
But, for the love of god, if you're playing this game now, add the Realism+ Redux mod. It improves performance and graphics, fixes the glitchy mess of a game it often is, adds random weapons NPCs carry and stops them from being boss battles. If you want a better experience (unless you want to experience the vanilla suffering), add this mod.

Runs fine on modern hardware and I have experienced no crashes or glitches and yes I'm running it at 60fps because literally any old game is gonna freak when you're at 800+ fps you maniacs.

It's good, just make sure when starting the game you don't get malaria otherwise you might as well restart your entire game because it will make your life hell.

Can't believe Cyberpunk 2077 copied the malaria mechanic and "terrorist in your head" from this game
(I recommend installing the "Realism+ Redux" mod if you want to run this game properly)

in typical ubisoft fashion. THey're selling you a game that doesn't work anymore. The controls, graphics, and missions are bugged to the point that you cannot progress further in the game. If you uninstall it, it boots the game up. how do you even botch something this badly as a "AAAA" developer?
