El Paso, Elsewhere Reviews
STAKES. GUNS. SLOW-MO. Fight werewolves and vampires in a reality-shifting motel. Dive through barricades to escape the grasp of evil puppets. Destroy the villain you loved. A new, third-person love letter to classic shooters. Neo-noir never looked so good.

Must be me, but I don't understand the rave reviews. I''m counting bullets instead of having fun. After an hour of running around in weird motel buildings that don't make any sense, shooting enemies that don't make any sense, I can't take any more.

Eh, played for a bit but very repetitive and mostly ammo watching. It has great reviews but my short gameplay time didnt reflect the positive rating as I thought it was mediocre at best so it must just not be for me.

El Paso, Elsewhere appears to be a supernatural themed Max Payne homage at first blush and it is in a lot of ways. Unlike Max Payne, the slow-mo dive is completely unnecessary and most times hinders more than helps. That's not to say that the combat isn't well done or fun; it's just different, relying on i-frames and a dodge roll to get players out of sticky situations. The game's guns are the standard shooter affair: dual pistols, shotty, machine guns, etc. and they all feel and sound great. Levels are presented in an interesting ,otherworldly style where most are lacking ceilings. This gives players a limited view of what's to come and looks creepy while doing it.
The visuals, voice overs, and story presentation are delivered in a familiar noir style. The story feels earnest and believable despite the supernatural lean. The voice acting throughout is dark and gravelly, but never feels forced. Graphically, El Paso, Elsewhere is a mix of old and new. Character models and environments are rendered in a low poly, blurry texture style reminiscent of the 32-bit era, while the lighting has a more modern look. The music, particularly the songs with lyrics, are a love it or hate it affair. While I'm not a huge fan of the vocal delivery, the lyrical content is almost always relevant to the story and the protagonist's journey at a particular moment.
My only significant gripes are the length and a few difficulty spikes. While the length coincides with the protagonist's struggle, it feels overlong by a few hours. There are also two boss fights that feel slightly out of place with the rest of the game, leading to some uneven difficulty. Thankfully, the game is engaging enough to push through the tough spots. Overall El Paso, Elsewhere is a rough, but worthwhile experience for action fans.
