I like it. Clearly not as concise an experience as the original, whether you like what they have added or you feel like it is unnecessary padding will depend on the individual.

I have a taste for games that combine action segments with settlement building. Games like Cult of the Lamb, The Riftbreaker and for the retro crowd, Dark Cloud 2. So it’s easy to see why I would be interested in ActRaiser Renaissance, a remake of the original 1991 SNES game.
However, the lukewarm reviews and pre-rendered graphics convinced me to second guess myself and put buying this game off for years. Only just now did I decide to bite and take a chance on it, and I’m happy to say that I’m glad I did. I ended up having a great time with Renaissance and I now wish I had bought it earlier.
There may be better 2D action platformers, city builders and tower defense games out there, but what makes ActRaiser Renaissance special is how it combines all three into its core gameplay loop. As the Lord of Light, you have to reclaim the world from the demonic minions of Tanzra by building cities, defending them from the monsters’ attacks, and growing the people’s faith in you. All before striking down Tanzra’s champion and moving on to a new land to repeat the process again.
While Renaissance does add more action beats with clearing out the monster lairs
and an additional stage with a new final boss past the credits.
the majority of the new content is focused on the tower defense segments, the newly added characters and the greatly expanded story that comes with them. If you want to be cynical about it, these additions were likely made to keep players from downvoting the game over its short length. The original game could be cleared in about five hours, while Renaissance takes closer to 15. Completionists and achievement hunters can expect the game to last even longer.
If you’re not into tower defense or all of the extra reading, then you may be put off by this game. If you’re used to playing JRPGs and paying attention to their plots, then I really don’t think the story here is going to be a problem for you at all.
While I understand why ActRaiser Renaissance might be a disappointment for those who were only expecting a new coat of paint over the same old game, that shouldn’t stop anyone who is willing to play and enjoy it on its own terms.
Recommended.

This hurts, for those who played the original back on the snes days you will have a nostalgic trip wrapped in a modern jacket. However if you never did its a though one, it has some very good things going for it but it all gets throw out the window with its terrible implantation of its tower defence mini game. Mind you this was never part of the original one, but its a major part of this remaster and its terribly flawed. If it was done right it might have actually improved the game by a good amount but no its not that.
Also they went for more story but its being told in such a way you are constantly interrupted and it sucks the pacing out of the game completely. It can be skipped most of the time but it still pulls you out of whatever it is you were doing.
All in all I simply cannot recommend it at its current price, the game ain't bad but I did feel myself get to the point were I just wanted to be done with it for the sake of atleast ending the game. So get it on a sale if you wanna try it.
