Oh, War on the Sea. It can be the most fun. CAN.
Let's talk downsides first.
Submarine warfare. A sub in player's hand is OP, game breaking OP.
On the other hand, AI subs are annoying AF. And yes, it's their role to be harassing and annoying, but it feels like too much. On my first 8-hour game session, I spent 4 hours hunting subs. I had like a dozen of sub encounters and two surface engagements. I sunk 5 subs, and it didn't seem to make a dent. It was not fun. I have a 9 to 5 job, after that I go to my other job, which is putting up with a newborn and all the s**t my feisty toddler came up with. I don't need another job. My advice is, don't use subs and turn the AI subs off. Also, don't have kids. Then it's a lot of fun.
The AI is sometimes funky. A convoy of 2 DDs, 1 CL and 4 merchant ships charged my 3 CAs banzai style. As you may predict, I've wiped the floor with them. I would understand sacrificing expandable warships to slow me down and give time for the convoys with troops on them to run the hell out. That's what I would do. Maybe. But that's not what happened.
Also, I assume that you know that the game is slower than playing chess... by traditional mail. It's a vibe, I'm into that vibe. I have spent a lot of time in Silent Hunter. Send help.
But funky AI aside and with the subs off, surface engagements are a lot of fun. Bombing the enemy ships is a spectacle. Too bad that after air to surface engagement, the enemy fleet magically teleports. I had my own strike group chasing that fleet, now I've lost all my progress in catching up with them!
But it's still fun. Combined air and surface engagements are the most fun. Bomb/torpedo the heaviest ships first, and then finish the job with your strike group. I fondly remember my fight with an enemy group containing a battleship. I didn't have a battleship, but my bombers managed to damage BB's rotor and disable it's rear turrets. I was carefully manoeuvring my strike group to stay as long as possible in the battleship baffle. I had just enough time to deal with all the other ships before the battleship was able to get frontal guns in arc. After which I run like a little girl.
The campaign is actually pretty short, after finishing it, you feel like the game wasn't worth the money. But wait, the game is just a blueprint, mods add so much content!
Overall, I recommend the game. And if you happen to like the ASW part of this game... I'm fine with that, but also go touch some grass.
