Base Campaign review
It's a very safe game and that's not a bad thing at all, despite me wanting a bit more challenge in some of the puzzles or more diverse missions in Cyber Space than just reaching the goal, getting rings, all red star rings and an S rank. If that's not your rhing you can always search for Big's fishing spots and get Emerald Vault keys that way, it's your choice how you play the video game in the end.
Cyber Space is probably the part of the game where it's the most of a mixed bag. Sonic's controls are way off: you have to push the left stick to the side and then down to have a smoother turn because Sonic barely budges to the side otherwise. His turning radius while jumping is way too wide, I missed some due to that and when you get launched off a spring - you get barely any control there unless you double jump. Some of Sonic's moves don't refresh after a spring. You don't get to stomp or airboost again unless you touch the ground. The level consists of mostly recreations of their counterparts in either Generations, Unleashed, or even from the Adventure games (2-6 and 3-1 are my favourites). Speedrun-wise this part of the game is really good, utilizing techniques like magnet dashing or rail launching feel really good. The developers are even aware of the tech used and mark each them next to the time at the results screen.
The Open Zones are the core of the game, with lots of puzzles, guardians and proper boss fights at the end of each island. They're simple stuff like reaching the goal in time, a jumping rope challenge or just dealing as much damage as possible. Cyber Space is accessed from with Portal Gears, which drop after defeating a Guardian. Combat in this game isn't super rich, most of the time you can just punch through enemies no problem, even at Level 1. There's also parrying in this game that's seemingly infinite, so you can just hold both bumpers down indefinitely and the attack will be parried automatically. Some of the Guardians aren't that difficult, but you'll still have to fight the game itself in one way or another. My favourites have got to be either SQUID or GHOST, the latter of which is literally just an obstacle course while your rings get taken away one second at a time, and even then it's a delightful battle.
The Titans are THE highlight of the game. The emeralds are on the islands and the last one is at the top of each titan's head, for you to do a little bit of traversal before the fight. Sonic turns into Super Sonic and Kellin Quinn accompanies with their songs, which go HARD btw. The fights however aren't that challenging, the game even tells you the fights consist of dishing out as much as you can before your rings are completely drained. I feels like there's some stake at the fights, but the titans don't attack nearly as often to guarantee that. It's basically free hits for most of the fight. You can beat them no issue at Strength and Defense at level 1, but they're basically a joke once maxed out. In my opinion, it should've been that you can barely beat them by the skin of your teeth at Level 1, and they're still moderately challenging on max stats.
The music for the game fits really well and it's very pleasant to listen to. The three first island have their own theme, with 7 variations depending on how many Chaos Emeralds you've already obtained. It's a nice sense of progression to have the music go from desolate somberness, to hopeful and cheery tunes that I really appreciate. The music for the Cyber Space stages isn't half bad either
In later updates of the game, stuff was added to the base game. Like the photo mode and Action Chain Challenges, along minor things like special Koco to increase your max Boost Gauge. The Action Challenges are a side mode that has you running around the island and interacting with as much stuff as you can in them to get the highest score possible. S ranking all of them grants you the Spindash that can even be used in Cyber Space. New modes like Cyber Space Challenge or Battle Rush have also been added. S ranking each step in either modes unlocks something special, for Cyber Space Challenge it's Power Boost in Cyber Space, while for Battle Rush is Extreme difficulty.
Update 3: The Final Horizon - Another Story Review
Another Story shows a slightly different storyline than the base campaign: Instead of Sonic getting all Emeralds, this time his friends are searching for them while Sonic takes on trials to further enhance Super Sonic in order to defeat the source of all problems.
Introduced are three new playable characters: Amy, Knuckles and Tails. Each of them have different abilities, Amy has a higher jump and a hover, Knuckles can glide and Tails can use his twin tails to fly. They control pretty differently than what you would expect, Knuckles and Tails especially. Knuckles' gliding turns feel wider and more resisting than they need to be, and some of their moves have a very long windup animation before you get to actually do what you want them to do. Most basic abilities that Sonic has from the getgo, like Stomping, Parrying or attacking itself needs to be purchased from the Skill Tree now. That being said, the island is however designed with their movesets in mind, you'll see lots of yellow, red and pink blocky areas that are specifically catered to how they function.
If you thought the guardians were a bit lacking in the base game, you'll be annoyed with how UNFAIR they are here: very high amount of health, projectiles and attacks launched at ludicrous speeds, with almost no chance to attack yourself, even if you had Sonic on max stats. (I played both Base and Another Story on Hard btw). I got devastated several times from one guardian here for underestimating its difficulty. Every guardian, should you run into one, wants you DEAD. It took me several minutes to defeat at least one with Sonic maxed out. It was at this moment that I swore myself to never underestimate a Sonic game ever again.
The challenges/puzzles are also more difficult, it's why I didn't bother uncovering the full map in this campaign (if there was an achievement for it i would've cried). Some of them are still simple stomp switches, but most of them are so logically overhauled that they culd take several minutes to figure out the solution to.
Cyber Space too easy? Don't fret, it's extreme, too! Here, Cyber Space stages are remixes from previous stages, adding a LOT of things over the base geometry of the levels. They have more unique and difficult missions to go through, like finishing the stage before a hologram copy of Tails, or rescuing animal friends to safe places. The S rank requirements have also been tweaked.
The trials, are hard. Your abilities and stats get reset to the beginning and you'll have to prove that you're worthy of getting the new power. Things get pretty unfair as the trials go on, and the last trial you have to face is a back to back bossrush with no rings replenishable whatsoever. I wish you the best of luck on your reflexes and sanity on these because they already got nerfed once after backlash when it launched, and they're still pretty gruesome even now.
Final Thoughts
While the base game was pretty good on its own, the Final Horizon update felt like it was a letter with a middle finger toward fans which thought the game was too easy. I can understand the need for some challenge in the gameplay, but this was honestly a bit too much. And that's even with the adjustment patch, I can't even begin to imagine how nerve-racking it'd be to do this with the Day 1 balance.
That aside, the game is still really good, even with it's flaws. I see the potential in the Open Zone formula and I hope it carries over to future titles as well, maybe in a similar fashion like Shadow Generations' White Space. Simply running around in this game already felt so much fun, I can't wait to see what will come next in store.
