This is the latest episode of the terrific (and terrifying!) Dread X Collection series, so, like its predecessors, it is an anthology of short horror games tied together by a common hub with a little background story. Every DXC episode (except the first) is characterized by a particular theme, beyond the simple horror theme, of course! DXC2 has a Lovecraftian theme, DXC3 has a "spoopy" theme, and DXC The Hunt has a first person shooter theme. All the 7 mini-games are FPS, each one with its own mechanics and its own atmosphere. This is the best thing about DXC, the variety. You can be sure you'll find at least a couple of games you will really like among all those the collection has to offer. Here is a small review of each single game in DXC The Hunt, so that you can decide if there is something attracting for you:
- main hub: this time the main hub is much more focused on the story rather than the puzzles, to the point that every mini-game is immediately available from the start; I'll say no more on this to avoid spoilers
- Uktena64: nice hunting simulator where you can both shoot with a gun and with a camera; I loved the creepy atmosphere, the nice feedback of the weapons, the enemy design, and the comical but disturbing mood
- Axis Mundi: my favourite; a ghost hunting simulator where you can defend yourself from ghosts with a camera, much like in Dreadout, if you know the game; the atmosphere is wonderful, creepy and tense, but relaxing at the same time, and the background lore is fascinating to say the least; there are also some nice puzzles and some (easy) platforming, and this is good, because it adds variety to the gameplay
- Black Relic: I didn't like this one; the dark and gothic atmosphere is awesome, but the controls are clunky and the graphics made me dizzy; also, enemy design is uninspired, and there's too much backtracking
- Rose of Meat: I didn't like this one at all; I didn't like anything of it: the graphics almost made me feel sick, the shooting system is ridiculous, the story is too confusing, it doesn't make any sense, the enemies are truly ugly (not in a good way!) and the quests are forgettable
- Seraphixial: this one has a very basic design, you simply move forward and shoot things; however the ambience is really nice, it's weird, surreal and disturbing, as well as the monsters and the weapons; the guns don't give a good feedback, but they do their work; I didn't like the story though, it's too unclear
- The fruit: I can't say much about this because I couldn't play it; the frame rate drops to 1 FPS, so the game is literally unplayable; it might be a problem of my pc only though
- The House of Unrest: this is a hybrid between an FPS and a puzzle game; it reminded me of Japanese puzzle games made with RPGmaker for the ambience, the atmosphere and the level design; however the enemies are forgettable and uninspired, it's not fun shooting them; the puzzles are well made, but nothing special
Overall I liked almost all the games, so I definitely recommend this experience to all lovers of horror shooters. There are still many bugs in all the games, and also in the main hub, and I experienced a lot of huge frame rate drops, but still it was a very nice adventure... or better, a very nice collection of adventures!
Cheers guys!
Update: I managed to finish "The fruit" by setting the difficulty to the minimum. It was a true physical pain, but I did it. Since I don't know if the frame rate issues are due to my pc or not, I'll review the game without considering them. "The fruit" is full of interesting ideas, for example the puzzle mechanics, and has a great eerie atmosphere, reminiscent of games like "Bloodborne" or "Witch hunt". However the shooting system is really too clunky, and the enemies are forgettable to say the least, they have nothing special. I liked the ending though, it was very strong and emotional.
