The localization for this game was as good as usual, I snickered every time I read the episodes prologue.
The main character wasn’t as brilliant as in the previous game, which made sense after reaching the end. Still, I missed flirty, finger-gunning Yuriko.
Snow White’s route:
Snow was my fave while playing the earlier games, so I started his route pretty hyped up. Sadly, my (very high) expectations weren’t met.
I guess the thing that soured this route for me, was the way it felt confusing/incomplete. Even after reaching the happy ending, I was left with more questions than answers. Simply put, everything in this route (the plot, the ending, Snow White, Yurika) felt off.
To top it all, I disliked the way being in love with someone trumped loving someone. As if caring platonically for someone can’t ever be enough to help them, but throw in a kiss or two and everything is solved...and I know, I know the plot was way more complex than that, but I was left with this impression.
I didn’t even notice it while playing, but the atmosphere was very bleak and oppressive. As soon as I reached the ending, I unconsciously took a big breath and felt lighter...
The Wizard’s route:
I left Snow White’s route wanting answers and boy, did the game deliver. You know that saying about train wrecks and looking at them? Yeah...
So, this route started as a reverse harem, and it actually called itself as such within the first 2 minutes...it was a bit of a let-down to be honest (I dislike harem stories), but for TxA, where noth-ing is as it seems, I could suffer the indignity (so glad I did).
After Gretel, this was the most suspenseful route. Every time I thought I had everything figured out, the game answered questions that I didn’t even know I had. After completing this route, I started to think about the previous ones with the new information I had, and it was actually pretty amazing seeing everything come together.
Final thoughts:
To sum it up, I didn’t enjoy Snow’s route much because it felt incomplete, which is understandable if you keep in mind the Wizard’s route. As for the Wizard’s route itself, it was quite emotional and answered all my questions.
I think reading Episodes 1 and 2 is essential to catch the million references this game throws at you, and to understand the plot in its complexity.
As always, the characters felt very real and “human”.
