I love visual novels, but my demands to enjoy one are pretty high. The good news: Royal Alchemist hits all the marks. It is wonderfully written with characters who feel fleshed out, relatable, and in some cases mysterious. The graphics and the sound are really good, too, and help to build a world that is believable and that I enjoy to return to. Mechanically, it works similar to Long Live the Queen, another favorite of mine, but more forgiving and varied at the same time. You not only raise the stats of your own character, but also the magical talents of three princes you are tutoring. Furthermore, you can go on missions, fulfill demands of different factions of the kingdom, and prepare different alchemistical items. If this sounds overwhelming, it is not. On the other hand, it is not too simplistic either. It's just right. So without further ado and spoiling anything, do yourself a favor and give Royal Alchemist a try.

First: I really want to give this game a thumps up. But I can't. Royal Alchemist mixes a lot of good ideas gameplay-wise with an interesting storyline but anything else I couldn't get myself to like. I tried, but I really am disappointed. Now that I finished all the routes I'd like to share some thoughts about it: DON'T BUY IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SEXY TIME – THERE'S NONE If you like to play visual novels because of the well written, steamy romance moments this one here isn't what you're looking for. Because there are no smut moments in „Royal Alchemist“ at all. Nope, no sexy stuff here. It's a VN that tries to have it all: Adventure, Drama, Humor and a little bit of Mystery (in your first playthrough). And imho it fails because of that. I bought it because I read „dateable“ wrong. You get to know one prince better then the others, but that's it. There are some fluffy, playful moments but the whole game is very safe to play for children and teens 13 and above, I'd say. Some foul language, a lot of fighting and you enchant some wine but no alcohol or drug use anywhere beyond that, and a few, very rare, kisses are the worst of it. Nothing explicit at all – there is one suggestive moment but nothing beyond that; and the only adult theme I saw in the whole game was slavery. Wait for a real sale and play awesome free stuff like Cinderella Phenomenom or Tailors Tale – there's enough good stuff out there. I did play the Demo and watch some LPs beforehand but unfortunately the demo gave me the impression there was more 'adult' stuff because the first fight ends pretty bloody surprising. And the let's plays all were showing the very last chapter of each romance (I didn't notice that back then) and I did like what I saw there – but didn't expect it at all to be a final conclusion to a full fledged romance story. So my honest opinion for all three routes: The love story and the romance lack alot. It's not bad written, but there is little to none suspension. I ended up liking Nazir's route the most, because finally something happened in it that really shook the MC and my love interest and wasn't predictable beforehand. But I waited for more than just holding hands and smiling at each other. And to be honest I still do, because I did take a liking to all three princes – but maybe the developers didn't want to write romantic stuff or think it wouldn't fit in the royal setting. I don't know. But it feels like the real interesting stories were absolutely not told. WHAT THE GAME DOES WELL: You get the important lore informations when they get relevant for the story. That is some very good storytelling there and I was really impressed by the complex worldbuilding. Well done! Character Grimoire is a real nice diary attempt and helpful when you forget some names. Extra Stats for Deaths: I liked this alot. The side quests were really adorable made, with small illustrations to gather and real nice written stories in it. Too bad there was not enough time to finish more of them – I wanted to, but when the next status check came around, I died all the time so I hardly did any quests in ordner to survive the game. The NPCs were interesting and I did like the fact that fulfilling orders for them did change some dialogue when we meet them again later. PLEASE IMPROVE THIS, SO I CAN BUY YOUR NEXT GAME: I love this genre and I do appreciate the work you put into this game. Really. But I really hope you try to work on the testing department more. It felt like I was betatesting this game (300+ screenshots with mispells and other unpolished stuff) and that's the main reason I do indeed regret paying full price for it. I did buy the game because I want to give my money to developers that do involve character design including using gender neutral adressing of the MC. And I was really mad everytime my character got adressed the wrong way - it feels like there is a lot to improve here. And it was the main selling point for me. Some sound effects were too loud while others were too quiet and / or they just didn't fit and the (nice) music was much too repetetive, getting plain boring far too soon – how long are those tracks? Do you really stand listening to one of them playing for more than 1 hour? I don't. With the many dead ends it is really annoying to skip through everything only to getting reminded that there are about 3 effect-noises used in total; the lack of ANY voicing from the characters irritated me the most. Not even a single grunt, a sigh or a chuckle from the thre princes, really? Stats leveling system: Don't make it random, please! It makes writing a walkthrough so much harder and playing through it without one unnecessary tougher, too. Please just add a way to add +3 all the time and let us stop spamming the save/load buttons when it's raining down +1 and +2 stats. It gave me headaches and I cried when I had to start a whole storyarc from the beginning, when I realised I wouldn't get further in the story because of this damn stat system. Double checks when one stat check in the main story failed: This reminded me of good old RPGs where you could wriggle yourself out of death moments by using other abilities. Good idea and okay-ish implemented, but I really wish you had spread the stat-checks further. I died alot in Aurelius arc, because I didn't want my tutor to be a fighting machine. In the end I had to skill the MC the way you want her to 'suit' the prince, but that felt just wrong for me. The artwork could use more improvement, too, and it's totally okay to give a team member a hint about something like that. I felt so bad every time all I could think about was 'why is this xyz looking so awkward' when a nice scene happend but the CG didn't match the description. I understand that it is a lot work to make CGs. But there were a few scenes that totally screamed 'CG HERE, NOW' and when I just got 6 lines of description and that was it - that felt weird. The hugging scene with Nazir, or holding hands... or at least give me a picture of my MC in it with the LI as a finish portrait. I mean a romance ending and all I get is a smiling character portrait? Ehm... okay? And the only kiss scene cg in Aurelius route was reused 3 times because... you were not interested in even painting the background of the thing in another color? Maybe you want to look for a bigger team of artworkers? And that the storytelling / writing was done by multiple writers did show alot. The main story didn't fit the pace of the crammed in 'romantic' filler moments. It just lacked heart and a correct pacing. All in all the game was much to slow for me, too repetetive and sometimes even boring – but I did like the characters so I fought my way through it when they did stupid stuff like ignoring us for weeks or just running off on their own. There are a lot questions unrevealed (Most important for me: What about the MC being a Rosenkreuz and the whole conflict in EVERY pairing, because the royal family doesn't want more of that blood in the lineage? Why wasn't that adressed at all?) and I don't know if you can find out any more about the world if you try to ingame, but I was just confused when everything happened in the last week when 50+ weeks before nothing happened at all and then BOOM everything happens at once – well, that was really bad story telling there. Or as another player wrote under a screenshot: How many plot twists can you place in a single scene in the forest?! (⊙_⊙) The biggest flaw for me was that Aurelius character didn't work at all. I mean I get the gist of it and see a lot of great potential but the way his story is told at the moment every NPC has more depth to his character development than him. A story can not reach the player / the reader when all you throw at him is 'we didn't need words' and 'spoke with our eyes' and then just don't tell what is happening at all. This is ridiculous. Just my 2 cents here. Guess I'll be off writing fanfics again.
