Positives:
- Cheap as chips.
- Big titted anime waifus.
- No woke BS.
- Persistent progress with a customizable ship.
- Controls are re-mappable, & the UI matches a standard ABXY controller scheme, so it's easy to understand.
Negatives:
- 2.5D art style lacks the charm of 2D sprites.
- No toggle for weapon fire by default.
- Voice acting is entirely in moonspeak, so I have no idea what they are talking about. The dialogue is continuous throughout the experience, & I don't have time to look at the subtitles while I'm literally playing a bullet hell game, so I'm never going to know what they are actually talking about. Even in English I think the constant talking while I'm trying to play a videogame might be annoying.
Notes:
The game gives you a reason not to to be shooting constantly by having fuel tanks on the weapons that deplete as you use them, & can be recharged by picking up the floating blue cubes that spawn regularly during a mission. I appreciate the innovation, but honestly I think I'd rather these games just auto-fired without me having to press anything. Even with the weapon fuel mechanic I still think that the game would benefit from a fire toggle button, rather than having to hold it down. Although the game gives you 2 separate weapon slots attached to 2 separate buttons, I found I mostly just wanted to fire both at once, but I can see how some missions or circumstances could require a different approach. I made a Steam Control setup that turns the left bumper into a toggle for both weapons simultaneously & found that this improved my experience. The game also has a speed system that gives your ship 3 gears by default, the idea being that you can switch to slow or fast speeds depending whether you want to make small adjustments to thread the needle through enemy fire or move quickly to re-position. Again, it's nice to see innovation, but in practice, 3 gears is too many. You can purchase 2-gear & 1-gear engines at the upgrade shop. I found I preferred using the single speed engine, thus rendering the entire mechanic completely irrelevant. A superior approach would be to use the relative position from the centre of the analog stick on the controller to determine movement speed. The only reason to do it the way they have is for people who insist on using mouse & keyboard, & just innovation for the sake of it.
