Ghoulboy - Dark Sword of Goblin is a good hack and slash platformer and done by the same people that made Mahluk:Dark demon, this game is even better than that game, okay then let's talk about the story.
The land of Gunzabar is a dark and gloomy land ruled by the last Goblin King Gamunbal, a tyrant that rules with an Iron fist of cruelty, but there is a prophecy that the last Goblin King’s rain was going to end by the ghoul Hunter.
The Goblin King knew who that legendary adventurer was, he was Galdar a merciless Berserker who has slain hundreds of monsters, but Gamunbal had successfully captured and imprisoned the heroic Barbarian. But not all hope is lost for Galdar’s son the Young Thulgar takes up the fight, now the young boy must fight the horde of horrors in order to free his father.
Now let’s get into the likes, the gameplay is very good and in a lot of ways it's improvement of their previous game, it feels a lot more fair although there is a downgrade and some bunk but I'll get to that in the dislikes, also it's a bit of a puzzle platformer as well as a hack and slash one. Basically you have a spear you can throw not only can it hurt enemies it can also become a makeshift platform, it was real handy especially in later levels. I always loved multipurpose weapons, things that can be used to kill enemies but also solve puzzles and traverse levels.
The story is good a bit more detailed than their other game, it’s still a simple stop the bad guy story, but it does have a little twist at the end I felt was adorable and cool. The graphics are good very colorful with some nice designs that really capture the feel of classic side scrollers, it’s also both spooky yet also adorable in a way with its designes and colors. The levels are good a little diverse with some interesting locations to see from a spooky little town, to a creepy cave to a castle.
The enemies and bosses are good each one had their own unique looks; while some had been seen in their previous game Mahluk there were a lot of new enemies and they had their own unique designs that really captures the vibe of a sword and sorcery world. The music was good it really fit the game’s classic vibe very well.
Now let’s get into the dislikes, there are some levels that are kind of bunk that requires you to have the health upgrade before you beat them, Also for some weird reason Ghoulboy can't duck, in their previous game Mahluk the hero could duck and dodge certain traps, but here Ghoulboy can't. I don't know I felt that was a real downgrade and felt that was needed for certain traps.
I also wish that we had more bosses to fight, we only have four well technically three since the third boss is not something you fight, it just chases you from the beginning of the level to the end you don't even get to fight it. Also more could have been done with the spear like you could fight a giant boss and use the spear to climb up to the top in order to fight it, but that's my idea on how the spear could have been used more. Finally there is this strange thing were the achievements didn't unlock while I was playing the game, they did unlock after I closed the game which was weird.
So then with that all said Ghoulboy - Dark Sword of Goblin is a good hack and slash platformer, done by the same people that made Mahluk:Dark demon and this game is even better than that game, it has very good gameplay, a good story and good graphics, so I definitely recommend getting this game if you were looking for a nice retro styled hack and slash puzzle light game this could be for you.
