An absolutely phenomenal game that still hold up to this day. While the game is a bit too hard for my liking, I'll absolutely recommend this game for anyone looking for one of those late 90s shooters. The game doesn't have any invasive cut scenes that mess up the flow of the game, and the puzzles are implemented very well and keep the game moving.

its fun but gets really rage inducing towards the end and the gameplay begins to grow repetitive

A classic game that I experienced for the first time in 2025, so here's what I thought of it! +Pros+ +Great environmental storytelling, every room serves a purpose and the lore is delivered to you very smartly through the NPCs. Very charming voice lines +The pacing is pretty good throughout the first 2/3rds of the game, up to a point. You'll know it when you get there. +The variety of weaponry you can find, the fact that they're all fun to use is a huge bonus. -Cons -The last third of the game is kind of boring for how weird it tries to be. It's less charming than the first 2/3rds and I really wanted it to wrap up by the end. -The "final boss" is really bad. Not the worst I've ever seen, but pretty lame. Very much a fun game that's worth playing today! 8.5/10

I can see how this was a revolutionary game at the time, but Half Life just has so many flaws that it's just not fun to play in 2025. Let me first state this: I did not play Valve-created games at time of release, so I hold no memories for these games whatsoever. That being said, I feel like many people are blindsided by nostalgia when playing Half-Life. Here's a non-comprehensive list of what I dislike: 1. Fall damage is almost inevitable, given the pretty subpar, slippery movement. And it hits like a truck. 2. Enemies have literal heat-seeking missiles. I'm average at games, but the NPCs have instantaneous reaction times. Also, some enemies are just straight up impossible to kill, like snipers. 3. The fast movement makes you feel like you should rush each level, but there is so much other stuff (jumpscare enemies, landmines, trip mines, a helicopter that constantly shoots you) that prioritizes a slow, methodical approach. 4. Health and HEV restoration is few and far between, meaning you may be stuck with 5hp and never find a health pack, leading to constant dying and reloading. 5. Dialogue and objectives are poorly emphasized. This issue is understandable, given when this game was released, but it's still a QOL issue that I'm glad almost all modern games include. 6. So many weapons/tools are not relevant, and there is no explanation as to what they do. Why would I ever use a trip mine against an opponent when I have a shotgun, MP5, extremely strong revolver, etc.? Again, many of these issues are simply faults of the era, and I'm not going to be overly critical about them. I can admit that Half-Life was a big splash in the gaming industry at the time set up Valve to be a titan of the industry. But, withholding any nostalgia, the issues are significant enough that make the overall experience unfun.

It is Half-Life. If that statement means nothing to you, put this on your wishlist, wait to pick it up for two bucks during a Steam sale, and experience *THE* watershed moment in first person shooters. This game isn't just art, it is History. You can make a case for separating the history of video games so far into "Before Half-Life" and "After Half-Life." I don't care id you don't enjoy FPSes, either play this game, or find someone who will play it for you while you watch. It is that important. Shout-out to everyone else who was alive and gaming when this sucker dropped.

looks better than HL Source, which i just finished less than an hour ago. functions better too.... i mean i played this years ago, decided to try out Source, and this is way more functional 8/10 i dont like the physics of this game... you zip around so much that the character doesn't do what you need, but i guess that helps to make the game more challenging. it's cool for a classic but dated... how the bots aim so fast & explosive barrels dont kill the elite troopers... (i think, on hard mode or normal, like i said i started a game years ago, forgot what difficulty it was).

I be honest it took me two play through to finish the game mostly because I didn't listen to the dialogue. But it was a great game and it does life up to the good discussion it gets. Chapter - Interloper did feel a bit dragged out longer than it needed to be. Once you get there you'll feel the annoyance and wanting to get it over with. Half Live isn't "life changing" for the large hype but it's still really enjoyable to play with the game mechanic, better than some other new games. I have no other comments than you should really give this game a try if you haven't it was quite fun.

I am usually not too interested in playing 20+ year-old games just because they were revolutionary in their time, but Half-Life intrigued me enough to give it a try. I can definitely see how this game was groundbreaking for its era, and I’d say it hasn’t aged too badly. Its greatest strength is how it immerses you in its world without relying on heavy exposition, instead letting you experience events directly through gameplay. Despite the obviously dated graphics, the game still manages to pull you into its atmosphere. There’s a good variety of weapons with some creative ideas, though I wouldn’t say I loved the combat that much overall. One aspect that hasn’t aged well is the movement. You’re oddly fast and floaty, which makes precision difficult. At times, it’s also unclear where you’re supposed to go, leading to moments where you end up running in circles, missing the small hidden crawl space needed to progress. Having to look up a playthrough for help multiple times isn’t a huge problem, but it does hurt immersion and enjoyment a bit. The game can also be surprisingly challenging, even on normal difficulty, which pushes you toward a more cautious and tactical combat style. That’s not a bad thing by itself, but the manual save system undermines it. Saving every minute feels like the most effective strategy, making the game much easier while also less fun. Half-Life is a milestone in FPS storytelling and remains a pretty solid and immersive experience even today.
