This game has no reason to be played over anything else. It's premise? It's poorly executed. It's game play? Liquid ass. Characters? Terribly Cringe (Kirito says it's offensive to use people's real name instead of their gamer tag wtf???). Story? 3 Words - Sword Art Online.

Everything bad everywhere all at once.
Insane jank in the movement, gunplay, animation locking, grapplehook garbage, infuriatingly stupid AI, ludicrous DLC prices, an uncomfortable amount of 'fansercives' with children...
...and another missed opportunity for a cool series to step out from under the greasy shadow of god emperor, digital Jesus Kirito, flushed away.
There is enough decent ideas flooting around here that I had always wanted to come back and actually finish the game. Now I just want to pull my hair out.
Honestly, just play Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy. Itll be less frustraiting and can actually be finished prior to the heat death of the universe.
PS: Lock the game at 30fps. Yes... you are getting 1 shot. No, its not about getting gud. Its the fps. just.... wow...

Mostly just writing this review to let you know that the first two hours are just a visual novel. After those two hours, you actually get to play the game and shoot things.
This game gives you the feeling of being in an MMO without actually playing an MMO. You see "other players" out in the world and you have to pvp them, you do dungeons, grind xp, have a home and hub city, etc. Meanwhile, its all actually just you and NPCs. Its been fun so far, granted I haven't played that long. I almost quit trying to get through the intro though, boy was that a lot of reading.

Eh, I guess it's an ok game, but it falls short on several aspects. Definitely do not buy at full price, it is just insulting for what this game is worth.
The gameplay is decent, fun combats, many weapon options, gear choices, skill choices, leveling etc. It's probably the game's strongest point despite being nothing really special.
Your party's AI is... abysmal.
The music is fairly good, but sometimes seems chosen at random. You'll get what sounds like combat music while walking around the hub for example.
The game design is so horrible, I hope they fired whoever was lead designer. The start of the game is an in-game tutorial, cool, you learn to move around and shoot... and then you get lots of dialogs, and story, and dialogs... It takes over 2h to get through the tutorial (and by that I mean, a couple minutes of the in-game tutorial you play through, and then hours of dialogs and info screens), you are bombarded with dozens of tutorial screen, introduced to a ton of characters you'll want to forget about immediately after. They could have made everything progressive, teaching you about new aspects as you go... but no, you get a massive tutorial about stuff you probably won't need for a couple hours and will forget about by then.
You can't rebind keys, and the shortcuts displayed are horrible. Want to cancel? hit backspace! (why not escape? why have me move my hand all the way to the right of the keyboard?) The worst part is most of the time, there are alternate keys for these actions that make more sense (for example, right click to cancel) but the game displays the worst ones and lets you guess the others.
You can not chain quests on the main quest line. So you'll do the quest to get to Point B, then you have to go back to the hub, to get the quest to do something at point B, then go do it... and go back to the hub to get the quest to move to point C... and so on. This makes the game very tedious, and there is quite frankly no reason to do this aside from artificially making the game longer.
Some things are poorly explained. You'd think a 2h tutorial would explain everything you need, but no, appraising items for example, is not really explained, and you could easily miss it for a very long time.
The story... I honestly have no idea what the story is. After hours of useless dialogs I just tuned out and started skipping every cutscene. it is that bad. The writing is absolutely terrible. I wouldn't mind some fluff/discussions with the anime characters, but it's just hours of filler text that says nothing and does not advance the story in any way shape or form. You also get tons of dialog choices, where you get to pick your answer, but 90% of the time, the choice makes absolutely no difference, and you are choosing between "yes" and "certainly". It is absolutely pointless. At the start of the game you find a special item, and every single person you talk to for the next 20 mins has to tell you how lucky you are. Repeatedly. What should have been 1 sentence from 1 character is something like 200 sentences from 10 characters who all repeat the same thing. Thanks game, I get it, I should feel lucky. Please move on. Soon after that there is even a question that an NPC asks you, and 5 minutes later, another NPC asks you exactly the same question, and one of the options is to mention the other NPC already asked you. Selecting that option does essentially nothing, and you get to pick another answer. This is such poor writing I can't understand what would possess someone to think hey, why don't we have more than one NPC ask you exactly the same thing? That does not sound like a waste of time at all!
TLDR: Decent gameplay, terrible design/dialogs, get it for very cheap, but at the price asked, it's an absolute no from me.

At some point i had an SAO period during which i tried all SA games, fatal bullet is the best game out off them all hands down. not a master piece but it has a very relaxing gameplay loop which lets you just hop in and shoot things and chill without thinking too hard. only SAO game i dont mind returning to every so often.
