This game taught me a valuable lesson: always test your games for at least 30 minutes before buying them. I bought this game a couple of years ago because I watched a video that said this was a hidden gem of a horror game. I blindly trusted the reviewer and didn't feel like playing it atm, so I just let it sit. I'm finally playing it now that I'm going through my backlog and I must say: had I known it was this bad I would've refunded it immediately after purchase.
The instructions are purely given to you through drawings and nothing else. Some are intuitive, and some not so much. The controls aren't immediately responsive, so you may think you failed to get in a locker and click twice, just to realize the game took a bit to process and now you went in and out of the locker and the killer is already slashing you.
One of the most atrocious things this game dared to do was make it so the game DOES NOT pause when you read text, check the map, or open your inventory. When you are chased the first time a text will immediately pop up without you examining anything saying that the door in front of you is locked. I didn't realize the game didn't pause on text and I hadn't gotten used to the controls yet, so the killer happily slashed at me until I closed it. Another time, when trying to go up some stairs the game examined the text next to the stairs, so when I appeared downstairs the text was now stuck because to use stairs and close a textbox you have to press E, so I was stuck in a loop of going up and down the stairs until the killer slashed me free. This happened to me other times as well, but you get the point.
I must say, though, there's nothing, and I mean NOTHING, worse than the killer. This isn't because she's scary, it's because she's SO incredibly annoying. You know it's bad when instead of scaring me whenever she pops up it just immediately pisses me off. She's so terribly buggy. There were multiple occasions where I had to close and open the game just to reset her AI because she would camp me over and over again. I would hide, wait for her to leave, only for her to pop out again nearly immediately when I left the room I was hiding in. I counted them once, she did it SIX TIMES IN A ROW.
The story isn't compelling at all either because the game doesn't really explain much of it, choosing instead to drop little hits and small, incomplete bits of information here and there. All this in favor of leaving a cliffhanger to build up "hype" for a sequel. I understand the shades, but what the hell was up with the Cthulhu vines and the venomous plants?? If there was a note that explained them, I'm sorry if the gameplay mechanic of expecting the killer to pop up at the most inconvenient of times didn't leave me with much time to collect and read each and every one of them.
The positives I have to say are that the art is great, the story/plot is original (that's all it is), and, well... that's pretty much it. Honestly, the only reason I finished this game was because I had already paid for it and couldn't get a refund. I would not recommend anyone give it a chance. You're better off watching a YouTube playthrough. It was most definitely NOT a gem, and now that I played through it do I realize why it was "hidden."
