Ubisoft surprises me, they can rip off Metal Gear Solid 5, Dark Souls, and the Witcher 3 and combine them to make this game, but despite ripping off three universally loved games the end result is this bland, grindy slop of a game with terrible, repetitive skillless and weightless combat, boring and brainless parkour that involves holding A to climb anything you want, and a story that doesn't even attempt to grab you.
I'm honestly shocked that this game and the subsequent reboot sequels have done as well as they have after playing this for even a couple hours. It does make me appreciate the aforementioned games that this game obviously draws inspiration from for not only doing it first, but also doing it much better.

In general it was okay. I LOVE the Egypt concept open world and story, just do not play it right after another AC like Odyssey. I finished Odyssey and right after that played Origins and it was BORING, i mean... same mechanism and repetitive side quests, but after couple of months gave it another try and it was refreshing. also Ubisoft?... ah. I have lots of problems with the launcher.

I'm a long time player of the AC series (only haven't played the very first AC game up to Origins) and only 1 hour in, I barely have any interest in finishing this game. It feels lazy and unfinished when compared to previous games. I don't ever post steam reviews but I was so disappointed by this latest instalment, I felt compelled to so.
Sure it's playable but when compared to other games out there of similar genres and release dates, it doesn't hold up. If this was a small independent game I'd picked up cheap then I might be pleasantly surprised but for a large Ubisoft title it's an embarrassment. I can only feel sorry for the devs who presumably were not given the time or resources they would have liked to actually polish this game to an acceptable standard.
In terms of specifics, here's what I've noticed an hour in:
-Combat: In general combat feels very lazy. Yes there's a few animations here and there but otherwise your weapon is just hitting what may as well be a large cube with no feeling of actually fighting the enemy in front of you. Similarly with the bow, when arrows hit animals, there's no satisfying contact of the arrow, just a general hit marker and the animal crumples to the ground.
-Graphical glitches:
First I noticed the camel leg movements make no attempt to match the ground they are standing on when on uneven terrain.
When my character moves back and forth, I initially glide across the ground for half a second before my legs begin moving.
During a cutscene, a scorpion crawled up into mid-air (very visibly in the foreground-i.e. I wasn't trying to look for issues).
When entering a cave with a breeze, some loose fabric on my clothing starting dancing around everywhere, including into the character model, with a life of its own.
Not exactly graphics maybe but was very disappointed early on to see that I can essentially climb anything (even a plain stone surface) by just holding a button. Half the fun of the older titles was finding your route up/around/across things, looking for those small cracks/ledges etc. to use, all built carefully into the environment. Even if they were a little convenient, they looked natural. Now it seems I can just climb anything, handholds or not.
-Voices/quests: Although admittedly only a few quests into the game, I am utterly uninspired. Most lines are delivered flatly as if they have no relation to the conversation they are part of. Characters who are meant to be old friends sound like they're reading a script for the first time.
-AI: I read good things in other reviews and honestly haven't experienced this aspect fully yet but couldn't not mention that, when riding back into town after the opening mission, my companion was talking about how he protects the citizens from the oppressive guards, while at the same time trampling any of them that got in his way.
-Equipment and levelling: This one is just personal preference but what is the point of having level locked quests/areas/progression in an open world game? Surely that takes away most of the fun of exploring where you like and finding your own way? I am also not looking forward to scouring the stats of half the weapons I come across just to see if they are an improvement or not.
-Controls: Again, personal preference but the controls feel very un-intuitive to me. To mention a few:
-The instinct to sprint and instead pulling out my shield.
-Awkward key binds for descending (and so many conflicts when I try to change them that I can't find a better solution).
-Holding v to search for loot every 5 seconds because it barely persists.
-As mentioned above, having one button to climb anything is, in my opinion, a backwards addition to the franchise.
I will try controller and see if that is any better.
To conclude, yes I have only played an hour and I sincerely do hope I start enjoying the game more. If I do, I will come back and edit this review. For now though, all I can say is that I'm glad I got this game in a sale. If I had paid full price, I would absolutely be seeking a refund.
I had been looking forward to getting back to the next AC game (I'm a little behind, yes) and instead I found myself having to try and look past a whole load of issues to even begin to enjoy playing the game.
Disaster of a game
Assassin's Creed Origins was Ubisoft's attempt at rebooting the AC franchise. After pumping out games on an yearly basis they decided to take some time off and bring us something fresh. I went into this game with an open mind, being a fan of the original Assassin's Creed entries I wanted to see how the new ones feel and play. After playing for over 70 hours and basically completing every single task I can definitively say that this is the worst Assassin's Creed game I've ever played and one of the worst RPG games as well. Unfortunately this is also the staple of modern Ubisoft.
Sequence I: The Open World
The Open World is a favorite of Ubisoft these days. Making an absolutely gigantic map where players can lose hours walking around and taking in the sights. Origins is the first game that started this awful trend. Our playground here is Ancient Egypt, an absolutely fantastic setting that looks incredible and is a blessing for photo mode enthusiasts. From the Pyramids of Giza to Alexandria and everything else you can think of, this game has it all. So why is this world awful to me? It's simple, there is close to nothing of interest to do. We'll get to the mission design in a bit but this formula is what completely killed the AC franchise in recent years. Take Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for example, you are confined to Rome. It's not a big map but has enough content to make it memorable while never feeling like a chore to explore. Egypt, as beautiful as it is, felt like an empty void.
Sequence II: The Redesign
Ubisoft wanted to make Origins feel different. People were sick of new Assassin's Creed games each year with little to no changes between them. Then Origins was released as a soft reboot, which changed almost every aspect of what made the series iconic. Assassin's Creed is an RPG now... for whatever reason. To me this change was nonsensical and it made me dislike the game even more. The combat was also redesigned to give it a more RPG-ey vibe. You have to dogde, roll and block with a shield to get through fights. The flair of the series was the powerful and cinematic combat. You could go 20 in 1 and beat everyone with counter-attack finishers, one of the most satisfying things you can do. Speaking of cinematics and gameplay, big scripted moments and set pieces are nowhere to be found, everything just happens in the open world and apart from few special boss fights, there's nothing remotely unique. Parkour also feels like a major downgrade from previous entries. Traversal is painfully slow, especially for such an enormous map. There is no sprinting option, it's either just slow walking or a toggle for "running", which is more like jogging.
Sequence III: Mission Design
Oh boy, here is where things get juicy. The absolutely WORST part of Assassin's Creed Origins. The mission design is horrible, there's no other way I can put it. Every single mission, apart from very, VERY rare exceptions, is a blatant copy of the previous one. Everything is just - go and find this person/item, it's not here, check the nearby camp/stronghold. Kill an enemy there, get the item/information, move on. Main quests, when all is said and done, feel like slightly upgraded side quests. Side quests themselves are bland and really offer nothing of value. It's one big mess of ideas, poorly stitched together with little cohesion. I remember during the marketing campaign Ubisoft described quests as memorable and emotional. Sadly a shockingly small number of them felt memorable or even remotely interesting to me. If you think that this is the worst part of Origins, however, you are dead wrong. Because AC is an RPG series now, every single quest requires you to reach a certain character level. Go underleveled and it's an insta-death or go overpowered and it's a complete cakewalk. To grind those levels, however, you'll have to do side activities and quests, which are also terrible and eat up a huge amount of time. That's the reason this game lasts as long as it does, you have to go through a constant, boring and uninspired, grind. Once you finally get to that main quest prepare to do more of the same filler until you assassinate your target and move on.
Sequence IV: Side Content and DLCs
In the beginning I mentioned the map of Ancient Egypt feeling empty with nothing to do. Well that's true, there's nothing meaningful to do. Boot up the game and you'll see that everywhere you go look there's a small question mark on the map, indicating an open world side activity. There's over 400 of those in total, but there's really only 5 or 6 variations to them. You are either going to stumble upon yet another military fort, the same one copy/pasted everywhere on the map, or you might reach a treasure location. Sometimes you'll find an animal lair where you'll have to kill the king animal but that's about all you'll do. Over FOUR HUNDRED TIMES! The same boring activity, multiplied all over the map for the sake of having content. This was not interesting, not rewarding and not fun in the slightest. The only thing that kept me going was knowing I have one less of these garbage activities to do. There are a few other things, such as ancient tombs, which are slightly more interesting but after doing a few of them you'll also have enough. I had hoped the two major DLCs for the game will at least offer something more unique, like a short and more cinematic story, but no, it's the same repetitive garbage from the main game splattered onto the DLC maps as well.
Sequence V: Story
Assassin's Creed Origins has a decent enough story. While it's not my favorite in the series, it's also not my least favorite. The origins of the Creed were laid out and there was a satisfying conclusion and bridge to the older titles. If I were to judge the game only based on the narrative it will get a recommendation, but that's not possible when the rest of the package is a stinker. The Hidden Ones and Curse of Pharaohs DLCs also have their own separate stories, which are fun enough, but again they are part of the larger mess.
Sequence VI: Ubisoft's Greed
Imagine issuing a patch for a 6+ years old game and removing a major source for Gear items. Oh right, that's what Ubisoft did when they removed the Heka chests from Origins in a 2023 patch. Want to get some unique legendary items and skins for your character? Buy them from the in-game store. That's right, a microtransactions store in a triple A game. The shop even has a category called time savers, you can pay real money to get crafting resources to speed up your upgrades. Before someone gets offended I should clear up that you can complete the game and do everything without ever using microtransactions, but the fact they exist and the fact that the game was designed around them is a complete joke. Know what else is a complete joke, Ubisoft's outrageous DRM practices! This seven year old stinker still has a combination of Denuvo, Ubisoft's own DRM and god knows what else. This hogs resources like crazy and introduces poorer performance for all of their games. Every game of theirs is a major commercial flop and they deserve all the bad press they've been getting.
Sequence VII: Conclusion
Assassin's Creed Origins is a disaster! I cannot recommend it especially as someone who's been playing AC from the beginning. It is NEITHER a good AC game nor a good RPG game. The fact it has over 85% positive reviews on Steam is puzzling to me. Have these people not played the previous games in the franchise? Or is this really the quality gamers are happy with these days? Do NOT purchase this game or anything made by Ubisoft, let them dig their own hole as they are already doing. If you are looking for a good AC game, pirate the originals or if you want a good RPG, buy something like The Witcher 3, it will be a much better use of your time than this!

Assassin's Creed Origins is my favorite game in the series. It's a refreshing take on the AC franchise, with the setting of ancient Egypt (probably the best setting in all the games). While I’m not the biggest fan of the RPG elements, the story is incredibly captivating, and Bayek is just soo badass and tragic as a character.
His journey on hunting down the people responsible for his son's death
makes him one of the most memorable protagonists in the series.
It's really sad that bro never got a happy ending.
I give it a 10/10.

While it was a bit of a struggle to try and find out why this game would crash all the time for me, just capping your FPS between 60-100 FPS seems to get the job done, you may still crash from time to time however. That and some fps drops during cutscenes are the only problems I ran into. Besides that, game runs flawlessly.
Its not fair to compare Origins to any AC games that came before, due to how different they are in nature, but this game has no right being this good. It easily ranks among the best AC games ever made, despite how different it may be to the previous entries. Egypt is genuinely an incredible map, probably the best one in all of the AC games, and not only is it fun to traverse and explore, but landmarks like Alexandria make you feel like you are inside of a painting. The story is very good too, this time we experience the creation of the Assassin brotherhood under the name of the hidden ones. Bayek is one of the most likable protagonists EVER in the entire franchise, and his character is further enhanced thanks to an incredible performance by voice actor Abubakar Salim. The rest of the characters are good too, but some of them just pop in and out of the story randomly which really doesn't help me care about them too much. Gameplay-wise, problems arise. Stealth and parkour have been butchered, it was a public execution. At least combat makes up for this in a way by being a lot more in depth than either stealth or parkour, but its a shame to see AC go further away from its roots. If you go into Origins expecting a good Assassin experience, forget it. What you WILL get is a very good, solid, exploration based action rpg.
DLCs are ok. Just like the base game The Hidden Ones and Curse of the Pharaohs are both set in breathtaking environments but all they really do is expand the story, not much else. More Bayek is a good excuse to me. Deluxe pack comes with a bonus mission, so does the season pass. Horus and Roman Centurion packs are all cosmetics.
9/10
