Even if you've never popped your periscope up Even if you've never cavitated Even if your sonar hasn't pinged a single time Even if you're below the thermal layer Once you fire one torpedo, every single helicopter, bomber, and support vessel in the entire Barents Sea knows exactly where you are. Noisemakers and decoys will not save you. It's fucking infuriating. But somehow I keep coming back.

After skimming the tutorials and a few tries, I managed to finish the final scenario, defeating a Chinese invasion force. I didn't even manage to get up to periscope depth, didn't see any of my enemies, half the time they weren't even identified. Just tried to be a hole in the water at max depth, to the point that I think I scraped my hull or something, because there was flooding that was frustratingly difficult to repair. But.. launching torpedoes at everything near me repeatedly sank all of the escorts and then I was free to launch missiles in the direction of where the remaining units had retreated. Those hit, end mission, hey I hit anything. One the one hand, that proved that at least it could be done, despite the aircraft flying overhead that I was unable to do anything about. On the other hand, it was utterly boring. Just launch torpedoes, wait for them to hit, never even knowing what the target even was. Repeat, wait a long time for repairs to finish, launch missiles on a hunch aaaaand we're done. There is just not enough to do, especially in a scenario where you have to fight in water that isn't very deep. The graphics haven't aged well and text/interface is tiny on a modern monitor. If you really, really, really like submarines, this could be for you. Otherwise, find something else. And no, the surface ships are just there to act as targets, if you can even see them. Oh and sometimes they're identified way after they've been sunk, which is, like, how?

This game is absolute peak. The sound design and the music is amazing. This game is a real beauty, and it's fun too! Getting hunted by two Udaloys and an Alfa is something that never gets old. Perfect Cat & Mouse game. Super Duper Recommend.

Great (sub) game . Ive owned this game when it was first released many years ago (from developer) and its been a great game . ~ Now a days this game has become even more-so , purely FANTASTIC with the modding community add on's . ~ So far Ive only added the "Epic" bundle mod (free download), but WOW .....what a MOD add-on !!! ~ The Epic mod adds so much more , upgraded graphics, but also with a bunch of cool scenarios even with surface war ships . ~ My advise if this is your type of game , specially if you like sub sims or Naval type battles , GRAB this game NOW ! (and mod- ON !!! )

I want to love this game, but it is so one sided towards the AI. For example, started a campaign, very first mission within literally 45 seconds a soviet helo dropped a torpedo directly onto me. I hadn't activated active sonar, i didn't even turn and was moving only 5 knots. AI has impeccable aim at all times, always knows where you are but your sub is seemingly a actual garbage can because i'm not even sure passive sonar works for the player. But the enemy will always find you no matter what. Trying to find enemy sub? good luck because they will shoot torpedo's at you far before you're ever able to detect the vessel, and sure you can use a bubbler decoy, but that torpedo will turn directly around and hit you in the rear. Completely one sided game.

"Welcome to the "Sillent Service", Commander. As of today, the United States Navy is deploying in combat action. We are at war and bloodshed cannot be avoided. Ready your crew, your boat and await order on downlink. The fight has just began." Cold Waters is a Submarine Combat Simulation game like no other. If you like something like Sillent Hunter, you fit in at home here (altough some diferences between the games are obvious, both mechanicaly and presentation wise). Cold War has gone hot and now the fight's on at sea. Pick you sub from the US Navy roster, read your orders and set to sea. The Red's are on the move and the Soviet Navy, despite not as modern, has numbers and tenacity. Make no mistake: when your in mission, you are alone. Just one US sub vs the Russian Communist war fleet! The objective might be different from time to time, but for the most part, you will be dodging torpedoes, fireing some of your own, launching decoys to fool the enemy and occasionaly let loose a volley of missiles (both anti-ship and TLAM's/TASM's). Some times, you will get to do some coocky stuff: infiltrate a Soviet Naval base and deploy a Navy SEAL's "frog-man crew" to conduct sabotage. But be warned: to many setback's and the Russian's might get desperate: a nuclear launch capable submarine might be your last mission in more ways than one. Either way, Cold Waters is a very drawn out affair: dont expect 10 minute action, queu back for another fight! No sir, here, the fights can take over 30 minutes to an hour, has the enemy can do pretty much all that you do and that which you cant do (they have surface vessels after all). So take to the sea's and try to save Europe and NATO the best you can, avoiding the Nuclear Nightmare of MAD. One torpedo at a time, and one torpedo per target. Make them count, skipper.

Great for people with a interest in Submarines and a perfect tool for modelling after the ships in the game.

Game has some serious issues with enemy ship sensors, even on the easy level with aggressiveness unchecked on the options for enemy ship conduct its a bloodbath. While I agree that there are some good points about this game such as realistic options for the older vessels and weapons loadout, there are some serious options missing 1. Where are the VLS tubes? Im having to manually load antiship missiles in torpedo tubes in a 2000 CE scenario with a seawolf class? I understand that there are no stinger mast weapons as opposed to the older game Red Storm Rising but at least give us some of the weapon systems that were actually in place in the mid 80's that would make sense 2. They have a standoff ASROC like weapon but its not for use in any of the scenarios with the USSR as the protagonist? I mean theyve had the RPK-6,7 since the 1980s but where are they? the game obviously uses them but not for the actual player? And what about coming out of the main map into the tactical gameplay CAVITATING? then suddenly you have 4 torpedoes on top of you that magically do a straight search and as you successfully decoy it/noise jam it then pulls a circular search right for your sub?? I mean at least balance this out a little for the fun of it, rather than having literally 10 torpedoes drop out of the sky on top of a sub using a strong surface current with thermal layer running silent on the EASY setting.
