Killing Time Reviews

A sophisticated shooter laced with gallows humor. Killing Time is no shallow grave. Its depth is well-conceived. Puzzle solving and strategic thinking are placed at a premium.

Killing Time is one of the best 3DO games and really one of the best narrative-driven FPS games I've ever played, but this version is not optimized for modern systems and the only existing community patch I found doesn't actually fix the issue of the game crashing. Nightdive Studios' remake is now just the default option for playing this game. The PC game weirdly has worse graphics than the 3DO version, and the Nightdive Studios version uses the 3DO graphics. It also runs way smoother than the 3DO version, along with modernizing the controls, so really it's just the go-to for playing this game now. This version is work to get running and even if you do you're still going to be dealing with visual anomalies, sound issues, crashing, etc.

Looks like it could probably be fun if it was given a modern control scheme. As it is, it's extremely awkward to play.

While I would recommend this game I would issue a very stark word of caution: The control system is POTATO LEVEL JANKY!!! Seriously, trying to play with the keyboard and mouse will give you devil's delight!! Given the nature of the game this may well be intentional, but it does make things a heck of a lot harder when you're being shot at and struggling to avoid getting ravaged by monsters. I'll try to keep this review as short and sweet as possible because it's a pretty by-the-numbers sort of shooter outside of the crappy controls. What I will say though is that this would be quite down the list of classic 1990s Horror titles that are not Resident Evil or Silent Hill. My advice would be to save your dollars for either the original Doom games, Blood by Monolith (of which this game feels strong derivative), or the criminally underrated Realms Of The Haunting. For a more modern alterative, try Forgive Me Father 1 and 2 or the two Shrine games which you can download for free. If you've already got all of those, you might want to give this a try. It's not very original, but it should offer a decent playthrough if you can find a way around the control issues. Final Verdict - 2.5/5
