[H3] A great additional mission which continues Tomb Raider’s excellent bar for quality. Make sure to buy the season pass instead, though.[/H3] Cold Darkness Awakened is a fun rogue-like mission to cap off Rise of the Tomb Raider’s season pass. Lara is stripped of her equipment and has to survive legions of zombies in a massive, densely packed Soviet research base while preventing further catastrophe. Truthfully, I’m not a big fan of zombies in games. Their entire identity hinges on being brain-dead, running directly towards the player and attempting to overwhelm by sheer numbers. They’re just not an interesting enemy to me, and it doesn’t feel too thematically relevant for Tomb Raider, a game which sits in the realm of plausible. True by name, Cold Darkness Awakened is also, well, dark. Lara relies heavily on her torch, ensuring you never feel completely safe, nor can you survey the environment. It reinforces the survival gameplay, but at the expense of the puzzles. For example, most of the DLC’s problem solving revolves around identifying colours. In practice, you’ll be squinting at the screen trying to see what’s what, and the even darker vignette around the screen (which can’t be disabled) makes this even more tedious. Otherwise, Cold Darkness Awakened is a pretty great mission. The puzzles are explained by Lara’s friend, Nadia, whose voice actor really decided to go the extra mile for the role as comms buddy. Her lines are filled with endearing attempts at uplifting Lara, awkward banter, and genuinely useful info. Nadia’s presence never wears thin and prevents what could otherwise be a lonely experience. There are also prisoners to rescue, but they’re all essentially nameless collectables and will break your stealth run immediately by firing off shots, despite being told by Lara to shush. There’s a good level of challenge here. The puzzles, weapons and prisoner locations are all randomised, so you can’t simply memorise a route and blast through it on autopilot. The map itself is densely packed with hidey-holes, chests, industrial machinery to climb atop of, trees to swing across, and ziplines to fly down. It creates a nice, continuous flow in combination with Lara’s movement and means there’s always a way out of a tricky situation. Cold Darkness Awakened is just over an hour long for a single run, which is a bit steep for £8.49. Most importantly, however, it’s the [b] same price as the full season pass.[/b] Therefore, do not buy this DLC from it’s Steam page and instead opt for the full pass, which contains all the DLC for the same price. Otherwise, enjoy another superb mission!
