This game is just not good. I remember hearing a lot about this game when it came out and it just never really interested me as a kid other than the one trailer everyone remembers. I am fairly certain that I died more to glitches in this game than I did from regular deaths. Fast zombies? Yawn get a better idea Zombies that throw stuff? Yeah man I really want to die when I turn away from a zombie like a thousand times? Sewer level that feels like half the game? I was a huge fan when a bloater glitched and floated around and killed me like it was a helicopter. The island feels lifeless, even if it's crawling with the undead. There's not a lot to really do on it other than just check out areas that don't provide a lot of resources. Characters feel pretty flat except for 1-2, one of whom gets killed right at the end for no reason. I genuinely do not understand why this is reviewed so well other than maybe for the fact that the game was probably so much worse when released that it's in a more playable state. But hey this game only came out a decade ago, that's not really a lot of time to iron out all the bugs the game is riddled with?

Dead Island walked so Dying Light could run But now that I finished the game it's more like Dead Island didn't even walk it just stumbled... The story should have taken itself much less seriously. When I first launched the game and saw the intro video I was expecting some brainless stupid zombie fun. What I got was a cheesy story riddled with clichés and trying to be too dramatic for it's own good. The cinematics are also a mess. I played alone all campaign. Still there are times when I'm alone with my character, other times there is a whole crew of people in them. That's not too big of a problem but my main issue with them is that they really break the flow and immersion. I reach a destination then a cinematic starts at a completely different location. Besides some scenes could have been fun gameplay sections instead of a simple transition, so we can get back to doing dull quests again. The gameplay after a while gets repetitive, it's still fun but it has a lot of jank in it, not a smooth experience. Zombies glitch through walls, people shoot through walls, zombies hit you through walls. The special zombies become annoying to fight as well. Especially the Thug, like you have a very limited move set here, and the game expects you to do some Dying Light tricks to not get hit by this guy. You can barely dodge the Ram because of the same reason, it's a neat idea, meh execution. The only cool special zombie is the Butcher, at least he looks badass. Also I don't know if it's a glitch or a feature. But the zombies that got green fumes around them sometimes throw something at you, and almost always that's an instant death. The locations are a mixed bag. The resort area is a unique setting, still I wish we could've seen more from the large hotel. The jungle is my favorite by a long shot, really cool atmosphere, fun to explore. These are for me the two highlights of the game. However there is the city, the prison and the terrible sewers which are just not very interesting, and typical zombie story locations. The quests are fetch quests 90% of the time. Likewise the NPCs have a tendency to send you back to the same location multiple times to get X item, which is another level of tedious. Overall it's not a terrible game, but definitely not a good one. You can have fun in it, particularly with modified weapons, and there were moments here and there which hooked me. Even so toward the middle of the third chapter I really couldn't wait to finish the game.

Great game for a good story line or when you just need to kill something. Played it for years and it just never gets old.

Dead Island in 2025 is rough around the edges, but still upholds the co-op theme with a focus on janky melee swings or underwhelming gunfire. This is definitely worth testing the mettle of your friendships.

Fun and challenging with no change of difficulty making you rely on your own skill and dodging capabilities. Can fill overwhelming at times but dying really isn't anything crazy and the money lost doesn't really matter and if you die alot well as you level up you can reduce amount of cash lost although if you like to explore its easy to gather cash. crafting of weapon abilities is solid too.

I have played this game across multiple platforms now for well over a decade and I still enjoy playing it. Something about tropical island, resort, people, zombies, survival, and making makeshift weapons just absolutely clicks and know many agree with me on this. The Definitive edition is the absolute best way to play overall by far as I own the original as well and although a few things are better overall it is a much improved experience overall with the definitive and alot less bugs to. Between beautiful crystal clear water, smashing a dudes head into pieces, and running around trying to find loved ones lost relatives amongst the jungles and bungalows I slip right into the setting and get to work. For the best experience I say play with your best friends as all different characters for best results but is in no way unenjoyable on your own. 10/10 would love to party with Svetlana again baby OOOOOOO!

Started decent, but became boring. I understand it's an old game but that doesn't mean it's good . Combat is bad, driving is bad and the quests? Horrible. Felt like a chore.

Dead Island – A Bloody Mixed Bag Dead Island is a game that constantly walks the line between fun and frustration. At its best, it delivers visceral, satisfying melee combat with a level of gore that never gets old. Smashing zombies with customized weapons, watching limbs fly off in slow motion — that’s where the game truly shines. You can clearly see the DNA that later evolved into Techland’s stronger titles like Dying Light. But unfortunately, not everything here is as sharp as your machete. The story? It’s serviceable. Yes, it's a little cliché — classic zombie outbreak on a tropical island, lost memories, shadowy corporations — nothing groundbreaking. But it gets the job done and moves the action forward without getting in the way. If you're here for the narrative, manage your expectations. Still, if you stick to the main quests and push through the story, the game becomes a more condensed and entertaining experience. Now for the downsides. And they’re not just minor annoyances — they’re major flaws. The gunplay is bad. Not outdated. Not clunky. Just bad. Guns feel weightless, sound weak, and have terrible feedback. It’s clear the game wasn’t built around them, and once firearms become more prominent, the combat takes a nosedive in quality. Then there’s the map design. It lacks direction, creativity, and cohesion. Environments feel repetitive, quests often force you into boring backtracking, and exploring doesn’t feel rewarding or intuitive. You’re not discovering new exciting zones — you’re just running errands in slightly different flavors of the same place. Despite all this, there's still something oddly enjoyable about Dead Island. It has heart, and when the moment-to-moment melee combat is working, it’s a blast. But if you want to get the most out of it without burning out, I recommend rushing the story and avoiding too much side content. Focus on the highlights, ignore the filler, and enjoy the chaotic charm while it lasts.

Absolute classic in the genre 🧟 Not much needs to be said to describe the game: you take a weapon and you kill zombies ⚒️🛡️ It’s extra good in co-op! I do want to point out though that, while the game itself is great, I hated the Ryder White DLC that comes included with it. Literally just instant spawn of those very fast zombies most of the time, and it's not necessarily hard because of that, but rather ends up being annoying and a drag. Other than that, I absolutely recommend this game, it’s great fun.
