Caveat: I only have 40 minutes of playtime at the time of review. But What the hell happened to the franchise after this game? Coming from GG Strive, then to XRD-rev 2 and now GG XXX AC+R, you can see that while the graphics got better, the creativity kept getting lower. While I think XRD Rev-2 is better than Strive in almost every detail, there is an unwavering and raw creative honesty in AC-PR that isnt present in any of its sequels. Faust is hilarious, Baiken has excellent glute formation and can actually move faster than a turtle, Millia can still hair car, Sol Bad Guy feels more expressive and Justice is the crypto futa Daisuke always wanted to be.

This game has a really unique cast of characters with incredibly interesting and constantly rewarding gameplay. I still am finding new tech, strategy, and more that I can implement with my main character I've put well over 1k hours into, not just in gameplay, but match review, theorizing, labbing, and more. If you want a fast paced, high skill ceiling, kinda jank fighting game Guilty Gear AC+R is the best on the market in my opinion. This game didn't care as much about balance as it cared about making really cool characters do really cool things. This game, that frequently goes on sale for $3, is one of my biggest hobbies. I genuinely love this game with all my heart and I've learned a ton about myself, life, and others through playing it. Anyways, I love this game and will probably continue playing it for a long time to come. I highly recomend it!

Absolutely my favorite fighting game of all time. You deserve to give it an honest shot even just once. I don't have any complaints with the cast. Every character, even the simpler ones, have immensely high skill ceilings. Some characters have a high skill floor, but there's probably a character for everyone in here. The resources in +R are some of my favorites in fighting games. If you're coming to +R from Xrd or Strive, you'll recognise the burst gauge and know tension is removed at the end of the round in those games, and the same apply to +R. The difference, however, is that +R adds way more 25% meter options, making you have an use for your resources at virtually any moment with the FRC system and force breaks, which function similarly to ex moves (or in some cases, mini-overdrives). Overdrives still have a place in +R's system due to a lot of them serving as utility instead of damage dumps, and also the lack of tension gain penalty after using them. The pace is breakneck and you're encouraged to play into it with your wide array of strong metered options, lest you lose it at the end of the round. The offensive mechanics and mixups in this game are downright brutal, but in exchange you gain an incredibly good defensive toolkit. What might seem like an uninteractive setplay sequence at first can be blown up by better players if you're predictable, making timing based mixups more effective as you learn. On top of the common Faultless Defense system (with a lot of anime fighters having something similar, such as Blazblue's Barrier) +R has some real gems. The prime examples of defensive system mechanics in this game compared to others are Instant Blocks and Slashbacks. Instant block gives you a metergain bonus for timing your blocks manually (a generous 8 frame window) on top of reducing pushback and blockstun by a little, letting you open up gaps and gain resources if your opponent's blockstrings become too predictable. Some things even go from being plus to slightly minus if you instant block, letting you punish predictable pressure resets without having to risk mashing. Slashbacks are the parry of the game, a 2f window and a tiny meter cost making it seem incredibly niche, but certain moves and sequences can be absolutely BLOWN up on a hard read. This lets stronger players punish autopiloting incredibly hard if they have the skill and a read. This prevents offense and pressure from becoming too one-note. A match between good players will often involve players doing more "fake" mixups for the sole purpose of avoiding autopiloting and getting Slashbacked, or having a gap in their pressure created by instant block exploited by reversals. It's hard to find a situation in +R where you're genuinely helpless or checkmated. If the fighting games you usually play seem to have oppressive offense and lacking defensive mechanics, +R is a joy to learn. Character matchups are very fun to learn with a lot to study. THAT BEING SAID, there are things you should know before getting into it. While the difficulty is often exaggurated (such as FRC timings, and the lack of input buffer on normals), +R is still not an easy game to play at a high level due to the sheer amount of options the game has. The game does have an input buffer for reversals on wakeup, so you're not dealing with super turbo levels of timing, but mashing on gaps can be hard if you don't have good execution. Some characters also have a very weird learning curve (Such as Johnny and I-No) which can be a bit daunting at first. That aside, the game has rollback, an active and cool community, the best lobby system of all time and a roster of really cool characters. If you're willing to put a little elbow grease into it +R is an immensely cool and rewarding game. I've yet to find anything that remotely scratches the same itch, and not for a lack of trying. It often goes on sale for dirt cheap too, and no DLC or season passes either with it being an older title. If you can't tell from this review, I have nothing but love for this game. This game is nothing but a love letter to the genre. If you're getting into it however, the in-game tutorial is nonexistent. Visit Dustloop or the +R discord for help if you're a beginner and you'll have a much easier time learning.
