I really want this game to be great, but sadly it's not. It's 90% monotonous filler garbage and 10% story. If I weren't such a huge ff7 fan and dead set on seeing everything in the game, I would have shelved it after about 4 hours. I don't hold a lot of hope for the next installment, and I wish I hadn't tarnished my memories of the original with this inferior imitation.

The combat felt less fun the more I familiarized myself with it. There's broken stuff, but it also feels like Square was too scared to do anything too crazy with it. I think it really falls apart on harder challenges.
The characters feel like their original selves for the most part. I'm glad it kept a lot of the goofy tone. I'm not big on the additions. Without spoiling anything, the "one foot in, one foot out" approach to changing things up feels really lazy. Pick a side. I hate the bombastic ending, I also hated it in the previous game.
Like the previous game, this game is also extremely padded. Thankfully the padding, with few exceptions, is fairly enjoyable.
Trying to 100% this game is miserable and something I gave up on. Overall I enjoyed my time with the game.

!Spoilers!
Writing...writing... writing... :(
I wish they hadn't tried so hard to add their own flair to a great story.
They diluted it to the point where they had to introduce a multi-verse for things to make sense.
We all remember how great Marvel got when they did that.
Not good; lazy, derivative writing.

A must play direct sequel to anyone who like or have played Final Fantasy VII Remake.
The game improved everything from it's predecessor, although on some aspects it copies the infamous Ubisoft style checklists based open world game design that as of time of writing this review on early 2025 has gone stale, but since this is such a departure from Remake, it doesn't feel as bad as when you're playing several Ubisoft open world games in a row.
The story telling is also improved from the first game as it explain many things from Remake but since this is still just the middle game of a trilogy it still left you with questions by the time you finished the game, on that note one criticism I can give is the reliance on other broader FF7 lore that may somewhat required to fully grasp what's going on just like in Remake, at this point it's just unavoidable.
Gameplay wise it has additional fun both in combat and outside of combat, with a plethora of mini games that you can participate in, however I personally think a significant portion of the mini games could've been cut down and replaced with more meaningful side contents that are connected to the main story and characters.
I would praise the game for having great memorable orchestral soundtracks and even a beautiful main song that is integrated into the main story event in such a way that can leave a lasting impact on the player, it's a rarity in gaming.
Now onto the graphics and performance, it's an unreal engine 4 game which by the time of now in the mid 2020s it only looks "standard", with a rather big open world hub to explore make it both a bit impressive but also not impressive at the same time as in perhaps the game could have looked better if it was more linear like Remake but the level design and world building that went into the open world carry the visual of this game, especially when you realize it has to reimagine the design from almost 30 years ago with the original game.
That being said, the game isn't running that good on my now aging PC, with a Ryzen 3900X, 32 GB DDR4, NVME gen 3 drives and RTX 4070 Ti, playing the game at 3440x1440 res the game can perform okayish with DLSS set to quality mode, but even after plenty of performance tweak mods, the game is still stuttering on certain levels, locations and even when I got quick cutscene transitions, it's not stuttering all the time, more like just for a second or two but still very noticeable, and luckily not during combat and most other action oriented gameplay.
Alas about that I also have to say that the game blatantly not supporting any ultrawide display, by default the game will only render in 16:9 with black bars, I had to use a mod to fix it, a rather unacceptable thing for a mid 2020s AAA game but it is what it is, as someone who've been using ultrawide displays for 10 years now I have since long accepted that mods to fix such a thing are required.
Overall, a solid 2nd game in a trilogy, if I could only rate Remake as a 6/10 game (despite I totally enjoyed it), then this one can be rated as a 8/10 game to easily tell how much of an improved game it is compared to the predecessor, here's hoping they can deliver the grand finale of the trilogy in the future! And please make it not a timed platform exclusive by that time.

As somebody who played through the original FF7 several times through, I have to agree with the others saying that this game just drags on and is a complete slog. The amount of open world fluff is absolutely insane. The first zone through, the novelty is okay for a FF game - oh wow, I get to see the whole world from the old game.
Well, the novelty wears off, fast. Every zone has the same exact things you have to do for exploration over and over again. The pacing is awful and a variety of things are locked behind the exploration but it never feels gratifying. Even opening the game feels like a chore in the second half of the game - I am just exhausted, which I've seen reflected by a number of people. This game is entirely too long and for all the wrong reasons. It is not long because there's a wealth of action and story/lore to be taken in. It is not long because there is incredibly gratifying gameplay to enjoy. It is long because they ripped the Assassin's Creed formula out and pasted it into this game. Here are the same handful of sidequests, now go do them over and over in every single place you go to so we can pad the playtime and "content."
As somebody who just came off 100%'ing Spiderman Miles Morales, good grief. The Spiderman games are a masterclass in how to execute on side quests and missions. Getting to 100% never felt like anything but a good time and a game. Here? Oh my god, I think I'm going to get PTSD episodes if I see more yellow dots.
I'll finish the game out of spite at this point, I've already put in too much time.

This feels like unlimited production budget went into the game. In actuality the back breaking labour put in by developers is what makes it so. The soundtrack, battle system, quests(main and side), minigames, cutscenes, everything, No Corners Cut.
I am burned on open world design but here did not mind it at all. Taking my time and going through the zones made it more rewarding and made lot of the open world design woes to feel diluted.
The Battle system is gorgeous and flashy but is not built for clear and precise combat along with the camera contributing heavily to mid battle confusion and clarity.
The Soundtrack and Cutscenes are perfect , it cannot get better than this.
There are some problems in the how the game is structured and the volume of minigames or the open world design and these can get exacerbated if rushed or if someone simply does not like it.
Luckily for me these did not sour the experience.
Fantastic RPG with flaws but still comes out on top.

I have been a bit overwhelmed playing this game by just how much I adore it.
The original 1997 game was a huge part of my childhood, and these remakes were a great chance to revisit that nostalgia. Remake was an excellent game, not without its issues - but Rebirth elevates that formula so far above the first installment, that frankly it is stunning.
This is a lovely game. Lovely in that it's a joy to play, look at, to watch cutscenes. Following around what is probably my favourite party in any JRPG - ever - is happiness incarnate. I find myself taking screenshots CONSTANTLY, already thinking about how I'll want to revisit and remember this moment days, weeks or years down the line. It has one of the best soundtracks in all of gaming, seamlessly blending notes from the 1997 game whilst being so inventive and moving, perfectly accompanying you on the adventure you're on.
This installment released a year after the console release, and I'm amazed I was able to avoid all spoilers and discussion about it. It has flaws for sure - notably pacing and minor plot points. But with the elation I feel post-credits, I can't see how it doesn't sit in my list of favourite games of all time, right along with the original. This is a game that makes you feel you've been on an adventure - and by the end, you're just so excited for the next chapter.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth makes me long for a modern mainline Final Fantasy game that follows this formula and doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. The characters, the acting, the music, the world... All wrapped up in one of the best battle systems a JRPG has ever seen.
It's not perfect, but I love it.
A Solid JRPG, But Not the True FF7 Experience
The original Final Fantasy VII is one of my five favorite games of all time, and a game that's very special to me. So when FF7 Remake came out, while I think it's a good game, I was upset with how much they changed the original story. Now, after playing FF7 Rebirth, I can say that while the game is fun and well-made, they messed up the story even more. These games aren't true remakes of Final Fantasy VII. These are reimaginings or spin-offs of Final Fantasy VII.
What’s Good
The combat has been improved, it’s smoother, more exciting, and more strategical. The mini-games were mostly fun as well. Especially Queens Blood, I've had a thrill playing that. The other mini-games are mostly not that deep but are enjoyable. They recreated the original map in a beautiful way here, everything reflects their imagining back in 1997 beautifully in 3D in Rebirth. The characters are perfectly represented, their personalities, dialogue, and their dynamics as a group are all masterfully told in Rebirth. I love all these characters and quite enjoyed my time with them. The soundtrack is also good, but I like the original music more with some of the tracks.
What’s Bad
Now, the biggest problem for me is the story. The additional story changes in Rebirth are really annoying for an OG fan. I will not spoil the details here, but I really can't understand why. It's such a disappointment. The open world looks good for the most of the time, but the open world is simply a Ubisoft checklist open world. There isn't much to explore since you know what to find in each of them. And the activities in the open world are really repetitive and boring, so I didn't bother completing the maps since traversal isn't really fun and exploration felt meaningless in the rewarding the player part. There are some pacing issues in the main story too, but I didn't get bored playing the main story throughout. It was quite enjoyable. The optimization is terrible, Square Enix really doesn't care about PC optimization. Same with FF XVI and Rebirth. The graphics are decent here, not bad, not good. Rebirth usually didn't look impressive to me other than character details. Thus I expected this game to run very well but no, it runs like crap. Rebirth's performance is even more hilarious after playing Marvel's Spider-Man 2 100+ FPS on my system.
Conclusion
I really wanted a true remake that respected the original story. But FF7 Remake and Rebirth are not that. The game supplies multiple activities, high-budget storytelling and fun gameplay for players to enjoy. The remakes of Final Fantasy VII fail to deliver the expected experience according to my standards. But when I consider this as a JRPG, this is a quality one and is pretty enjoyable. Nevertheless, I would first recommend people to experience the original first, then try the "Remakes".
