I think some of the reviews of this game are a little overly harsh, but I agree I would not recommend this game. 99 Levels to Hell is a game split up over 100 levels (9 levels per world + 1 boss). In each level you have to go through a dungeon killing enemies, finding a key so you can open a door to get to the next level. There are also bombs, extra lives, and power-ups throughout the levels. The levels are randomly selected for each floor, but there are a preset number of options so by the halfway point I was recognizing levels which were being re-skinned for the theme of the new world which bothered me. The levels themselves were enjoyable as were the bosses. Regarding the pick-up options in each floor - it can be hard to see what you're picking up. Every now and then I picked up a new weapon. This was catastrophic because it always happened after I just finished getting my last weapon fully upgraded over ~30-40 minutes and my new one would be much weaker without a way to get my old one back. This almost guaranteed I would die shortly after. I do like that you can find new characters throughout the game with different starting weapons and perks if you are looking for extra doors in a level - that being said, each character gets stronger and I don't think I could have imagined beating the game without this progression after each time I died. So I am not sure how truly optional this is. There is an optional story. I wanted to follow the whole thing but only got ~60% because I must have missed a few random doors (there's only 10 doors in the game which get you more of the story it seems). The music, as others have mentioned, it mostly non-existent until you take too long on a floor and wake up anyone who may be nearby with sudden rock music blasting out of your computer. I don't think this game is awful - I just wouldn't recommend it when others take this genre more successfully in my opinion.
