Took an already amazing game and made it 100x better with shadow!!! If you aren't a fan of sonic gens story...Ian Flynn made up for it in shadow gens! I think this is my new favorite sonic game...

Sonic Generations was fun at the beginning, but it became tedious, plus the game has no story and one of the worst final bosses I've ever encountered. I would not have recommended the game if not for the Shadow part. It has 120 fps, double jump, homing attack on a separate button, a real story, and the best boss fights in the Sonic franchise. Btw, not including the Dark Begginings episodes is criminal. I understand they take hard drive space, but players shouldn't miss out on them.

10/10 game, genuinely enjoyed it but replaying shadow generations is sorta not fun, its one of those games you pick up, play the story and complete, then never touch again.

Game was great, it had a good story and didn't make shadow an edgelord, however I'm disappointed in the fact that instead of using a level from shadow the hedgehog, they used a level from sonic frontiers, a game that doesn't even include shadow at any point, whatsoever. Overall, the gameplay still makes it a 10/10. Edit: Be careful when shooting the journal pages out of the sky. One of them fell into the void for me :/

Switching between new and old sonic as well as shadow is a lot of fun, while I can't say the game is crazy challenging it is really exciting. the level design is great and you go so fast! And I get to look at cute Chao!!! Just bring back the chao garden, I'm begging you Sega TT^TT

Shadow Generations is this era of Sonic perfected, an era of Sonic that has unfortunately been rocky since the very beginning with Sonic Unleashed, the original sonic generations was a slight improvement on the gameplay of unleashed and colors, while severely lacking on the story side where unleashed thrived, Shadow Generations further improves the gameplay to a point where i believe it needs no more improvements, and the story is top notch and really brings back the feeling of the earlier Griffith era writing, this should really be labeled as the gold standard of Sonic and all future games should look to this one from now on, don't make writers who have so much potential to make stories like THIS, write the goofy slop that is the story of SONIC Generations.
to put it plainly, you're buying this for Shadow Generations, not Sonic Generations, the Sonic Gens "remaster" only really serves to break mods and tell a worse acted story. with re-recorded lines of dialogue that already exist in better forms in the original (all of eggman's lines, some of sonic's lines). un-needed dialogue changes (the classics only calling their eggman robotnik once, making the "eggman from the past" joke completely fall flat in the english dub). and even though there ARE a couple good edits sprinkled in there, like Amy's characterization being drastically improved. a select few of the redone lines fitting their respective characters much better ("on your feet" instead of "you got this sonic" for Shadow is a good example). the gameplay tweaks, mainly the removal of a set lives system, those don't make Sonic generations really worth it, and you're better off playing something else, like Shadow Generations, good thing you get both when you purchase this game, Shadow Generations is recommended, Sonic Generations is NOT.

Probably some of the best 3D levels in a Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2.

This game has the best sonic action set pieces in the past 20 years for the series, extremely fun play. My only complaints stem from the same issues generations base game has as well, the in between missions and the voice cast. Both of these feel like the weakest points to me. The hub world while compact and filled with collectibles is decent, but also not for me. With those in mind the game would still sit at like an 8, definitely will be replaying in the future.

Well then, after finally getting around to 100% completing both games within this collection; I can officially say that this package is well worth your time. The original Sonic Generations is still here with the levels exactly how you loved them before. Tight, clean, and blazing fast, and super fun to learn and get a perfect run on. I also used this opportunity to finally get all of the red rings this time around, and I must admit I liked it a lot. A vast majority of the time they are placed on the top path to reward players with the highest skill level, and when they weren't they were still fun to nab of a few repeat tries. I also went back and collected all of the secret chao newly added to each level. These are placed on the bottom path I found a majority of the time, which gave me a reason to go down and explore paths I would never usually take in these levels (the hints also help greatly). One thing I still have issue with in this game is the lack of quality of; especially some of the later challenge levels, where by the end I was just kind of hoping to be done with them. And I have to mention the odd rewrite of the dialogue, while I do find most of the re-write mostly harmless and even a little better than the original. It's hard to disagree that the performances here were below standard, and the lip-sync is now all out of wack.
OK, now onto the real star of the show here: Shadow Generations. While the speed here is dialled wayyyyy down which can really be felt standing next to one of the fastest modern sonic games, it trades this out for some of the most intricate and polished level designs and overall gameplay in possibly any sonic game to date. Levels have this level of scope to them thanks to all of the intertwining paths and interesting gimmicks, also taking full use of Shadow's newly aquired "Doom abilities" which were fun to get a hang of. Chaos control also allows for so many fun and crazy times within these levels too. The production quality here is also just top notch. Not only are the cutscenes (for the most part) truly stellar with vibrant, weighty and expressive animation, but this sentiment also bleeds into the gameplay as well. Where cinematic moments are always eye-catching, but also in my opinion more than spread out as to not disrupt to the flow of the game. The character study of shadow I felt was also top notch, with some really nice emotional beats that had me extra invested in the story here. Tons of extra content here too just like the original Generations. Collectibles are again often on the fastest path as a reward and when they aren't, they're fun to go out of your way and find. These also link to the open-zone hub world which also feels far more intricate and properly integrated than the floating rails and platforms of the Frontiers islands.
This game is truly a package worth the asking price. Both games are a blast from beginning to end. The future is bright for Sonic, and I can't wait for more.
