Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a tower defense/hack 'n slash fusion game except your goal is to guide the Tower (Yoshiro) as Soh (the hack 'n slasher) to the end of a stage while protecting her at night along with a small army of villagers you saved. This game is fun, I appreciated what Capcom put out to the table. It's not the first time I've played something of this sort either but it's also something I've not experienced in a long time as well so the route Capcom took about creating this game was great to me. From the moment you begin moving you can tell that it's smooth & responsive which helps in getting a player used to how the game feels. In every stage before you begin you have to purify the "defilement" in order to pave way for Yoshiro to the gate and clear the stage. The thing about every stage is that you have a set number of villagers as well as a set number of defilement to clear out. Why, you may ask? This is because you get crystals from purifying defilement which goes towards the path we carve for Yoshiro and the villagers as well. It encourages the player to explore their surroundings and find a lot of it. Again, why is that? Because this game runs on a day & night system where during the day is the "Preparation phase" and night is the "Defending" phase where the Seethe (enemy) appear and harm the precious Yoshiro from proceeding further to the end. It's important to note that during these phases you can also give your villagers roles (a.k.a classes) in order to help defend Yoshiro along her way. There is challenge in this as there will be new enemy types that show up and maps do become bigger as you progress. These stages include treasures, traps to assist versus the Seethe, and paths that require you to use villagers in order to go purify more Defilement. In every stage you also have 3 mini objectives which unlocks the player more crystals or Musubi (your method of upgrading) and that makes replaying stages a bit more worth doing and that same thing is applied to boss fights in the game as well. Also, after every stage cleared you can go back and repair the village to get more bonuses such as extra crystals, musubi, or collectibles for the gallery in game. You may be wondering where the hack n slash aspect comes from, and that lies within Soh. Soh has a very basic moveset at first, I'm talking very very bare for the first few stages. Simple "XXXY" or "XY" or "XXY" combos to do damage. Running around with Soh to either save Yoshiro or help villagers is part of the game so you're not "idle" you're constantly doing something unless nothing is happening and everything is covered (villagers are beatin up Seethe, Yoshiro ain't being hurt, etc). With Soh you're able to equip gear that not only helps you in your battle but also villagers as well. It leads into a lot of ways to be creative with how you approach stages & bosses. I would say that the first few stages are really meant to get you used to utilizing your villagers in battle because once you progress more into the game you'll unlock his skill tree which helps create a much more stronger arsenal for the character (he gets access to bow n arrow, parrying, and more. Just to give a small example. You don't have that starting off.) and in turn create more strategy and fun for the game. That's about all I can say at the moment because at the time of this review I didn't finish it yet but I am at the mid point section of the game but this is how I felt after playing about 10.8 hours on my record. I really just wanted to shill a game I enjoy, hopefully this review gives you an idea of what you're going into and hopefully you enjoy the game as well.

On first impression this appears to be a bad action game with a truly terrible ui and some underbaked tower defense mechanics. I'm not sticking around for a second impression. It feels like a training game for new developers at CAPCOM. Maybe everybody got to work on their own part. Unfortunately, when all those parts come together there is nothing interesting or compelling. They've also really leaned into the 'nobody has faces' thing that has become popular in recent years, and I gotta say, I miss faces. It was nice when video game characters had faces. As an action game, the feedback for taking damage is non-existant. There's no satisfaction in hitting things. And your generic faceless swordsman feels sluggish to control. These are pretty much the worst things you can do when starting a game. I can imagine a world where after like, 20 hours, this game becomes a good tower defense game. But I don't care enough to find out if that happens or if it just stays bad. If you're looking for a bad action/tower defense, CAPCOM has already made a better version in Monster Hunter Rise with the terrible Rampage mode. You'd be better off with any of the Orcs Must Die games or that Van Helsing spinoff game that no one played or remembers (Deathtrap).

Only rarely does a game have so much style and flair that you forget its a video game. It draws you in and surrounds you in its world. And its just wonderful.

I think this is sadly one of those games that will get forgotten quite easily, but I must say that I really enjoyed playing it through. I'm usually not much for tower defense games but this one kept me invested all the way till the end. I couldn't stomach NG+ though, I must admit.

Such a quiet hit, a super well polished game with a unique innovation on the tower defense formula. Wish there was a large siege mode for each town after you finished repairing them so you had a game-play reward besides just stats. itd also be a time the game could really let lose with the tower defense aspects. you never get more than like 10-12 guys, unless your fighting a boss and idk if those moments can really be called tower defense. it does a good job of making those few units so impactful you dont feel constrained at all though, but i really wish i at some point they really pushed it to the limit.

This game reminded me of the PS2 era of games when companies would let a developer make a new IP with a that is drastically different from what they usually make. Its a simple game with a fun premise the game has good play time with lots or replay value. Its not going to be for everyone but I would be lying if I didn't say I was addicted to the gameplay. Very fun (and gorgeous to boot) would recommend to anyone looking for something different.
