A classic boomer shooter that can be best described as "Doom" in a fantasy setting — arcade-style, fast-paced, bloody, and fun.
"Heretic" shines especially bright when compared to its successor, "Hexen". Here are a few key advantages that put "Heretic" ahead:
- longer overall campaign duration;
- greater enemy variety;
- more weapon types (per single-character playthrough).
Both games share a similar level design philosophy, but "Heretic" benefits from a more straightforward structure. There’s no need to teleport between separate hubs, making exploration much more enjoyable. In "Hexen", a huge chunk of the playtime is spent running around multiple interconnected maps trying to figure out which door just opened after pressing a switch. The game doesn’t tell you where the change occurred, so you're forced to blindly revisit previous areas, hoping to stumble upon the right path. In "Heretic", searching for secrets is just as rewarding, but the logic is always local: the way forward is nearby — you just need to find it.
"Hexen" gets a “fail” from me, while "Heretic" earns a confident thumbs-up.

An absolute classic, at the time it was a big deal in the midst of all the Doom clones because this was more focused on melee combat and fantasy.
This version is packed in DOSBox, it works...ok, but to be quite honest it's recomended you use a sourceport like GZDoom.
