If the setting isn't important to you but the mechanics are, then play Expeditions: Viking (the second game in the series) instead. There's a bit too much jank and annoyances here to make it enjoyable for me, even though the setting is very nice. The combat is unfortunately VERY repetitive and boring due to a lack of varied skills between characters, so it mostly boils down to positioning and luck. I played on Hard with a party themed around invasion instead of diplomacy, but you'll get plenty of combat regardless of your decisions so it'll still affect you.
Play it if you have a lot of time or if you enjoy the setting, otherwise check out Expeditions: Viking instead.

Final Note - 6.5/10.
Overall - Is a decent turn-based strategy game if we consider the year i was released (2013), the story and setting is good enough, nothing mind blowing in terms of plot but it get the poin across, the game is not too long (20h or more depending on the way you play and if you want to 100% and do all the content.)
If you like the setting like i did then consider getting the game in a promo (not worth the full price in my opinion). otherwise there is better options out there in the market.
Pro - Setting, Choices matter (there is two paths you can take later in the story) combat is simple while is a little junk, but it is straight to the point, the difficulty is good enough (played it on insane with ironman on, is harder at the start and had to do some save scumming, but as you progress it start to get easier, a little planning is required on some battles.) liked that you had a limit to how many of your followers you got to promote to a higher rank.
Cons - Not many companions interactions with in turn make me not care for most of them, not many skill variations for the followers, was not a fan of the way you moved on the world map, the camera is a nightmare to control, game freezes sometimes when in battle and / or during the world map, crashes when you close the game (at leats for me), overall the game aged poorly.
