Bro, it's f'n Wolfenstein 3D! If you can't FEEL the impact of that statement, you're probably a bitch... or a toddler.

Not exactly a good game to play nowadays, monotonous and repetitive, but I'm giving it a positive review due to its importance in setting the foundation for future FPS games and nostalgia factor. (I've played every expansion to this game and it was painful) If you want to play nowadays with modern controls, check out ECWolf. It's a sourceport for Wolf3D that makes it so you can play using modern controls and have a crispy widescreen resolution.

I give this game a rank C+ (65-70%)
Decent game - a pleasant experience... on sale.
See my profile for more details about my reviews.
Wolfenstein 3D gets a 68% from me mostly for historical reasons. Admittedly, I did not play much of it when it was out (I was more into Doom, its spiritual successor, and much more achieved game), and I never finished it (simply because it gets repetitive very quickly), so take this review with a handful of salt.
It is very cool to see where id software came from, to understand where Doom like games came from, and sure there are lots of very cool, innovative stuff in here. But ultimately, Wolfenstein 3D has a very repetitive game loop, a super boring (maze) level design reminiscent of Windows 3D maze screensaver, quite a clunky gameplay (controls are just not pleasant) and let's not even start talking about the lowbrow, bad taste theme, typical of late 80s early 90s.
To be fair, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was an excellent FPS, and its reboot series from the last 10 years is not too bad either.
Historically? Decent game, have a try, play a few levels, understand more about video game design history. Who knows, maybe you will love its barebone, ultra basic style, maybe you still play PacMan or Pong!
Ultimately? Go play Doom, Hexen, Duke Nukem, etc :)

Wolfenstein 3D is as timeless and legendary as its more popular outstanding pupil, Doom, albeit it's probably the one of the two that's aged the worst. The premise is as simple as it gets: you're B.J. Blazkowicz, superspy/soldier in WWII. Get in enemy territory, take down all the Nazi scum in your way, go to the next level, rinse and repeat.
The key to Wolf3D's success is in its gameplay basis: extremely basic and to-the-point yet undeniably addictive. Gunning Nazis down never gets old! Unfortunately the weakest aspect of this game is by far its level design. I understand the constrictions imposed by technical limitations and how much you could do with the engine at the time, but unfortunately Wolf3D's confusing maze-like levels will lead you to get lost very often.
While I consider this gem a true gem and one of those you must play at least once in your life, it's hard to deny it gets old pretty quickly. I consider it a perfect game for short bursts and a little match every now and then, but if you try to beat all of its episodes (plus the Spear of Destiny expansion) in a row, you'll get bored very quickly.
As another piece of advice: you should definitely play this in the ECWolf source port, as it's the most convenient modernized way to taste the original. Alternatively you can get a vast number of interesting recreations of Wolfenstein 3D in the shape of Doom mods.

The first time I bought this game I refunded it due to it's lack of strafing with WASD but came back to it looking over the controls and just playing the game. It definitely takes some getting used to but overall it's pretty fun. Also if you want to add more modern controls you can download ECwolf for a more comfortable experience.

still a blast...even after all these *sighs* decades. although not technically the first of its kind it was still the one from which the "mold" was created from which all other FPS games would follow (pretty closely) for better part of a decade. a franchise that truly endures as even (most of) its modern incarnation has also made waves in way that most reboots do not. Alongside DOOM, WOLFENSTEIN 3D stands as a giant in the annals of gaming history.
p.s. although i've only put in 15 minutes on my STEAM version...i've easily put in over 500 hours between 1994-1996 on both the Atari Jaguar and my Compaq Presario PC (whatta beast!)

I only played through the first 3 episodes so far but It's a good game overall, kinda gets a little bit tricky in the boss battles (especially in episode 3 with hitler and his black suit clones) and pretty much gets really hard in the later levels of each episode, i havent like played episode 4 - 6 yet but i might do someday... or probably might not forever but still, also one thing to note is the voicelines, they are pretty qoutable to say the least, they just sound so funny because of the Sound Blaster compression alone, they are just so memeable and shit... the only criticism i can give about the game is the mouse controls, you have to like push the mouse a bit like up and down going "WOOSH!!!!!" at the same time lol
TLDR; Wolfenstein 3D is a damn good game!

Great game, and a classic for sure.
However, the controls and control customization could have allowed more modern controls.

Whenever I try older games, I tend to bounce off them pretty quickly and not finish them. So even though I love Doom and Doom II I didn't expect to like Wolfenstein 3D. I expected I might play one episode then move on but I wound up finishing the entire base game and Spear of Destiny. I think Wolf3D holds up really well and I thought it was a ton of fun. Please note that I'd recommend downloading the fan made mod/launcher EC Wolf which enables the map viewer and gives you the option of using a controller.
