It is not often that I will give a game a glowing review. But this game deserves it. Hordes of Hunger is a quintessential Hack and Slash Rogue Lite with tons of great ideas and a very considerable amount of quality considering it is from a small indie developer. There are honestly tons of things I can praise about this game, so lets get to it: 1 - Very Well Optimised: It's made with Unreal Engine, but I suspect it's UE4, because it suffers from none of the usual problems that plague UE5 games. It runs buttery smooth on my mid range gaming PC - solid 60 FPS, with absolutely no frame drops. And what's so incredibly impressive about this is that you can have hundreds of Enemy Monsters on screen, with VFX going off and damage numbers - And no frame drops!! The devs must have worked some real magic behind the scenes to optimise this game so well. Very impressive. 2 - Genuinely Good Art Direction: Although the graphics of this game are only just above average, the game has a consistent art style and level of quality. The characters are very nicely designed, with great aesthetics that fit the setting. The environments are pretty good and suit the atmosphere of the game. The VFX are okay - they look decent. The UI Design along with the loadscreen backgrounds and UI Art is actually very high quality. They definitely had some talented artists and UI designers working on this game. And it all fits together into a easy to use and cohesive design. Nice work! 3 - Gameplay: Its a ton of fun! Honestly for the first 15 minutes I thought the game was a mindless button mash, but actually the more I played, the more I realised that combat actually has skill and complexity to it, and once you get into the rythum of hacking, dodging, using a special skill, evading enemies, and completing the quest objectives, it all joins together into a very fun and fast paced carnival of destruction! Genuinly the most fun I've had in an ARPG since Path of Exile 2. And Hordes of Hunger has lots of great gameplay ideas, like the diverse quest objectives in each level that challenge the player to use their wits to survive and win! 4 - Difficulty: For me, the game has precisely the right amount of challenge. It's not easy at all, and I found each quest difficult to beat the first time it occurred. But as I got to understand the quest objectives they became challenging but doable and that was very satisfying and enjoyable. I could go on talking about lots of other cool things, like the character writing and storyline, which is excellent. But yeah, I was very pleasantly surprised by Hordes of Hunger and am very pleased I decided to give it a try. It's really refreshing to play a new game that has genuinely great ideas, and is well put together (unlike so much of the utter slop we get these days from cookie cutter Corpo devs ). For some reason this game consistently reminded me of a kind of singleplayer Dead By Daylight - but instead of running from the monster you face it head on and kick its ass! Haha! xD Playing as Mirah makes the player feel like a genuine magical, bad-ass hero, and that's a lot of fun! I sunk about 4 hours into the game tonight, and I'm only about 1/5th of the way into the game. So I'm definitely looking forward to playing it more in the next few days! Are there things in this game that need improving? Sure - but it's in Early Access so there's time for that. I didn't encounter any bugs. And that's really impressive too! All in all, I've really enjoyed Hordes of Hunger so far and I really look forward to seeing how the devs improve the game as they work towards full release. A definite add on to the game should be Cosmetics for Mirah, that would be awesome!! If you like Hack And Slash games like Devil May Cry, or horde ARPGs like Path of Exile, then I can heartily recommend Hordes of Hunger. A strong recommendation from me. Buy it and play it!!
