Tomb Raider’s multiplayer is home to the saddest dev interviews I’ve ever read.
Googling the Director of Tomb Raider 2013’s multiplayer, Daniel Bisson, rewards you with a man conflicted between shame and painfully forced enthusiasm for his project. “Let’s be honest, it’s not ‘oh my god, this is a revelation. [...] it’s not ground-breaking [...] It’s Tomb Raider.” For a Director who would later lead on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the final chapter of the incredibly successful reboot trilogy, it feels surprising that he can barely hold eye contact over his contribution. Joe Khoury, producer of the Tomb Raider’s multiplayer, comes across as downright defensive in the lead up to the game’s release: “We wanted to do something that didn’t feel like a last-minute addition. We didn’t want to do that. That was never the mandate, just to make sure we add a mode that’s not necessary.” Blink if you’re in danger, Joe. For these execs at Eidos-Montreal, who were hot off the heels of the critical and commercial hit Deus Ex: Human Revolution, there’s a sense of embarrassment about Tomb Raider’s multiplayer. Daniel sounds self-aware at best and depreciating at worst, while Joe sounds downright hostile to the game mode. Yet even if this mode truly was cobbled together (and honestly, I think most people would say it was), Tomb Raider 2013’s combat was a real highlight of the title. Exploration is the literal name of the game, but the fast and fluid controls, great weapon handling and physics made mowing down generic bad guys a blast. Besides, it was the era of tacked-on multiplayer anyway. Mass Effect 3, Bioshock 2 and Spec Ops: The Line all had forgettable multiplayer modes which served more as anti-piracy measures than legitimate gameplay additions. The former even required a single-use online code that came in Mass Effect 3’s physical box, and didn’t even make the cut in the exhaustively complete Legendary Edition of Mass Effect (which contains 40+ DLCs.) All this to say, I haven’t actually played Shanty Town because Tomb Raider’s multiplayer is dead and has been for some years. There was a small console revival due to the game’s inclusion on Xbox Game Pass, but PC is deserted. Would I have tried it if there were still players? Absolutely. But for now, the words of Daniel and Joe fill the void in my heart.
