I’m not into auto-combo games, to be honest, so I personally wouldn’t recommend it. If I had known it was like BlazBlue Central Fiction in that way, I wouldn’t have bought it. Oh well, what’s done is done. It is what it is.

If you like anime fighting games, this is like THE anime fighting game. Also they allow you to customize the colors for every character, and not some mk11 bs like I deadass made every character black as soon as I got the game. 10/10

There's something about this game that just doesn't feel right.
Maybe it's the presentation/art, which feels absolutely bleak and soulless. Maybe it was the unnecessary remixes (Raito is still an incredible artist though). Maybe it's the new mechanics, or how just aggresive the game became. But there's just something that just makes me want to go back to older uni...

I have mixed feelings about recommending UNI. On one hand, it's not a bad game. On the other hand, fighting games are niche and this is a niche game within fighting games, so be prepared to go looking for the community. I'd say wait for a pretty significant sale and pick it up as a side game if you're interested.

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes is a refined and exhilarating installment in the long-running 2D fighting game series developed by French-Bread. Building upon the solid foundation of its predecessors, this edition delivers a polished and accessible fighting experience that caters to both hardcore fans of the genre and newcomers alike. The game strikes a fine balance between deep, strategic gameplay and fast-paced, visually striking combat, making it a standout title in a crowded fighting game market. Its combination of unique character designs, intricate mechanics, and a well-constructed balance system showcases the developer’s commitment to evolving the series while maintaining its distinct identity.
One of the most notable strengths of UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes is its roster, featuring a diverse cast of characters each with their own distinct fighting styles, movesets, and story backgrounds. Whether players prefer close-range brawlers, zoning specialists, or mix-up heavy characters, there is a fighter suited to every playstyle. The animations are fluid and highly detailed, capturing the weight and impact of each attack while maintaining fast and responsive controls. Every character’s moves feel meaningful, and the execution of combos and special techniques provides a rewarding sense of mastery as players learn their nuances. This depth encourages experimentation and skill development, rewarding precision and strategic thinking.
Mechanically, the game shines through its layered combat system, which blends traditional 2D fighting game elements with innovative features unique to the UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH series. The introduction of the “GRD” system—where players build and compete for a shared resource called the GRD gauge—adds an extra dimension of tactical decision-making. Managing this resource effectively can turn the tide of battle, enabling powerful moves or defensive maneuvers at critical moments. The inclusion of “Veil Off” mode enhances offensive options and mix-ups, increasing the intensity of matches without sacrificing balance. This system encourages aggressive yet calculated play, keeping battles engaging and dynamic from start to finish.
The visual and audio presentation of UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes is striking and stylish, with a distinct anime-inspired aesthetic that complements the game’s high-energy combat. Stages are richly detailed, each with unique atmospheres that add flavor without distracting from the action. The character designs are bold and expressive, reflecting their personalities and lore through vibrant colors and fluid animations. The soundtrack is equally impressive, blending electronic, rock, and orchestral elements that heighten the adrenaline during matches while fitting the game’s dark, urban fantasy setting. Sound effects are crisp and impactful, providing satisfying feedback for each hit and move executed.
Accessibility is another strong suit of this game. While it offers deep and complex mechanics for veteran fighting game players, the developers have implemented an approachable control scheme and helpful tutorials that ease new players into the experience. The training modes are comprehensive, offering a variety of drills and lessons designed to teach everything from basic movement to advanced combo execution. This makes the game welcoming to a broader audience, without compromising the competitive integrity that appeals to hardcore fans. Additionally, the netcode is well-optimized, supporting smooth online matches with minimal latency, which is crucial for a fighting game community.
The story mode, while not the primary focus, is a nice addition for those interested in the lore and characters. It offers cinematic sequences and character interactions that enrich the world-building and provide context for the battles. Although the narrative is somewhat light compared to the depth of the combat system, it complements the overall experience and adds an extra layer of engagement for players who enjoy story-driven content.
Some areas for improvement include the relative niche appeal of the game outside the dedicated fighting game community and the occasional steep learning curve for mastering advanced techniques. The graphical style, while stunning, may not resonate with players seeking more realistic or Western-styled fighters. Additionally, the game’s single-player content could be expanded, as most of its longevity relies on multiplayer competition and community engagement.
In summary, UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes is a highly polished and exciting fighting game that successfully blends deep mechanics with accessible gameplay and a distinctive art style. It caters well to competitive players and newcomers alike, offering a satisfying blend of strategy, speed, and spectacle. With its robust roster, innovative systems, and engaging audiovisual presentation, it stands out as a must-play for fans of 2D fighters and anime-inspired games. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills online or simply enjoy a visually striking and mechanically rich fighting experience, UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH II Sys:Celes delivers a compelling package that continues to elevate the series.
