Magnificent. This is a 10 among 10's.
The music, the characters, the story mode, how good the game feels to play in general, the mechanics - I don't know if there's a single thing I would change.
If every beat-'em-up was this much fun, I'd play them all.

It's been almost 10 years and I still cry hearing Matsurai-san's voice ;_; There's also Yukarin, Nana-sama, Aki-chan, Uryo, Akki, etcetc typical 5pb with super stacked A-list seiyuu cast of the last decade.
Oh and the game's fun I guess.

★★☆☆☆
What's good:
Cute anime girls beat-em-up game.
The pixel art is gorgeous, the music is lovely, the combat looks fun and story is decent.
Enemies and bosses are unique in design and can be unlocked as playable characters. Online co-op and PvP modes support exists.
Local-Story, Arcade, Battlegrounds modes. Online-Story, Battlegrounds modes.
Easy to pick up and play with friends.
What could have been better:
No tutorial. Instead, there's a "reference" page which is pretty easy to understand, but it would have been helpful to learn the basics during gameplay.
What's bad:
The grind. To level up, you need to beat enemies and collect red gems. It's tedious and boring.
The combat, it is repetitive and lacks depth. The combos are there but the special attacks are OP and the Phantom Break mechanic is enough to beat every level, so the beat-em-up feels boring.
Visually different attacks for all characters, but they don't feel significantly different or interesting.
Repeat this grind+combat for all the characters, that just sounds like torture and a waste of time. If this sounds appealing to you, one must imagine sisyphus happy.

If you didnt get a chance to enjoy the 2010 version, this is the perfect chance to experience it again with a juice more of goodies:
>The Soundtrack was gorgeous. You don't gotta pick it up as you can always hear it in game or some youtube video but I'm grabbing it for myself and to support it.
>The artstyle is from a bygone era so they look fresh in 2020 since not many current anime trend use this style anymore. The illustration modernization really helps keep this style up to date as well.
>Looks like they updated some enemies.
>Maybe it's been a while...but feels like they added more maps inbetween some of the stages on higher difficulties.
>Enemies are now in the roster as playable characters.
>This game isn't just a BeatEmUp game...it's an actual FightingGame (first and foremost) that's a BeatEmUp genre. You have your L+M+H inputs with a simplified universal AnyDirection+S+button for all input attacks replacing actual forward+down+forward+(LMH)punchkick inputs. Plenty more that I could say here about the game mechanics but going to end it short here (block system, combo breakers, overdrive/installs).
Having owned PBBG and 100% achievements....I am not looking forward to doing that again but the reason I mention that I went full on achievements was because I really vibe on these games.
I don't like braindead hack and slash...I really prefer my Hack and Slash to have Directional Inputs and what nots like MegamanZero...DevilMayCry or Tales of Vesperia etc...inputs really make me feel like im in control of my character while unleashing fast paced barrages on enemies.
I find the game to be in the middle as its a simplified version of heavy input games and a slight more mechanical hackslash making it just enjoyable to (almost) anyone's level of gaming. Nothing feels better than connecting all your bread and butter combos > then near the end of your finishers, break your combo animations with the overdrive install which opens more cans of asswhooping.
I don't care too much about the meta or online pvp as that stuff only clogs up eventually and stinks, i only prefer to play this like how i play Smash with friends or monsterhunter co-ops.
PBBG was sick! This version is literally what the title is....the Ultimate version that gives PBBG fans some juice!
25usd for popular indies games seems to be the norm market price in 2025 since this game was like 15usd back in 2010. The price seems to match as inflation and wages progressed in the last decade.
If its too pricey you can wait for a sale...not missing out much
Highly Recommend!

The Skyrim of beat em' ups, this is a popular genre classic that has been repackaged and re-released on every possible device since the PS3/360 era. Back again, and this time fully remastered!(?)
Except it's not. Frankly, they've changed hardly nothing, and certainly not enough to justify a $25 price tag and an "Ultimate" title. Doesn't help they removed the original and already perfectly fine version from the store so people don't even have a choice anymore.
It's the PS4 version of the game under the hood, with some nearly non-existent graphical enhancements and the ability to play as enemy characters in some modes - which you won't do because they have limited movesets; you'll probably try them once and then just go back to your favorite proper character.
So why am I recommending it still? Well, this may be yet another lazy cash grab re-release for a series that deserved a proper sequel like a decade ago, but it's still a great game. Fast and snappy, with a diet progression and skill system that fits perfectly within the game's short story mode and relatively limited content offerings - fully powered up characters in this game are absolute wrecking balls and it's super satisfying and quick getting to that point. It's just a great beat em' up, one of the best ever. Should they have added more chapters, or characters, or just straight up made a proper sequel instead? Yes. Is this still worth grabbing and playing, especially on sale, and especially especially if you've somehow never played it before? Also yes.
I won't be diving into this any more than a story run through with my girl Yuzuha, I've already played this game to death other places. I suppose it was nice to have one more run through, but I will NOT be buying the inevitable "Super Ultimate Mega" version that will come out in three years. Just make an all new game guys come on.
Also I'm sorry but $13 for this soundtrack is absolutely nutty. Like, no.
